Judging for 'Create a Card: Round 63.'

Thanks to all the entrants -- there were a lot of really great submissions!

NOTE: this is judged harshly: if a card breached the acceptable power threshold (IMO) it received a 0 for the Power category.

Dodo | W
Creature - Bird (Mythic)

Fading 10

T: Add one mana of any color to your mana. Remove a Fade Counter from Dodo.

W, T: Tap target creature. Remove a Fade Counter from Dodo.

As a one drop white creature that lends itself to UW control beautifully this is ace. As mere acceleration this would see play but with the tapping ability as well its a force! Also the fading is a nice touch to represent the Dodo's seemingly poor adaptability.

Juice: 4 Power: 3.5 Innovation: 3.5 Flavour: 4.5 = 15.5/20

AEthermage's Wizard 1U

Creature - Human Wizard

Whenever an opponent plays a spell, he or she may pay (1). If he or she doesn't, you may draw a card.

Ummm---did you read the original post? This is overpowered for its cost; essentially a Grand Arbiter Augustin, likely to draw you as many cards as Bob but without his setback.

Juice: 3 Power: 0 (unacceptable) Innovation: 3 Flavour: 2 = 8/20

Rocky Mountain Locust 2RR
Creature- Insect M

When ~ enters the battlefield put a famine counter on each non-mountain land in play. When a land with a famine counter on it becomes tapped, destroy it. When ~ dies, remove all famine counters in play.

"Last harvest there was nothing left but stalks and scatterings of leaves! This year we haven't seen a single one of those little critters." -Agricultural Times-

This is interesting. It screams out as the '4 of' power 4 drop in RDW and yet could still be decent in other decks built around it. The cost is perfect and the power/toughness is spot on too. Though heavily susceptible to removal as a response to its trigger- this is a well balanced card.

Juice: 4 Power: 4 Innovation: 3.5 Flavour: 4.5 = 16/20

Ancient Smilodon (Mythic)
Creature - Cat

First Strike

When Ancient Smilodon dies, put two artifact tokens into play under your control. These tokens are equipment with "Equip: 1" and "Equipped creature gets +1/+0 and gains first strike."

I love this: it is perfect for WW and yet could even be a 2-3 of in UW. The M12 wording is nice too. The WW cost puts it in a well established genre and it holds its own. For me the flavour of the 'Ancient Smilodon' is the outstanding aspect though.

Juice: 4.5 Power: 3 Innovation: 4 Flavour: 5 = 16.5/20

Megaloceros giganteus (2GG)

creature - elk (mythic)

if a spell, ability or a damage that an opponent controls would cause <cardname> to leave play. that player looses half of his life round up.

..your ignorance will regress you for its demise..

Nice card: The wording is a little off, but the card has sweet flavour. In RG aggro I foresee it being just too powerful though. It is the efficiency of it that makes it broken, although be it by only a hair width. 'Blood tribute' and 'Quietus Spike' are clumsy for a reason.

Juice:4 Power: 0(unacceptable) Innovation:4 Flavour 4.5 =12.5/20

Triceratops 2GG

Creature - Lizard

Protection from blocking creatures.

Have you ever stood in its way? Oh I see you haven't, you are here after all.

This is on the money, however the 'protection from blocking creatures seems an iota too special. Straight 'protection from creatures' would have been better (though less innovative--just IMO of course). The flavour is great for a Triceratops and the power/toughness is well chosen (beyond -5/-5).

Juice: 4 Power: 3 innovation: 3.5 Flavour: 4 = 14.5/20

Creature - Dinosaur [E]
When Pterodactyl enters the battlefield, remove a creature an opponent controls from the game or sacrifice Pterodactyl.
when Pterodactyl leaves the battlefield, put the creature you removed from the game onto the battlefield under your control.
"To get one, we must use a lure. Oh look, bait!" - Squee, Defender of Dominaria

A powerhouse to be sure, a Pterodactyl card is a great idea. The power/toughness is perfect, the colour choice and etb/ltb abilities are innovative and the flavour is tech! And yet the cost is just under feasible for it not to have a CMC restriction on the creatures it can remove/gain control of. Overall great still.

Juice:5 Power:0(unacceptable) Innovation: 4.5 Flavour: 4.5 =14/20

Thylacine pack

Mythic Rare

Creature - Thylacine

Tap: Destroy target creature with toughness less than Thylacine pack's power, put a +1/+1 counter on Thylacine pack.

Tap an untapped human, elf or goblin you control: put a -1/-1 counter on Thylacine pack. Gain 2 life. Any player may activate this ability

Often hunted for sport or food, this beast saw it's numbers decline as other humanoids took over it's traditional hunting grounds

Thylacine Pack is a decent decent entry. The -1/-1 counter activated ability gives this innovation, wonderful flavour and a setback that is conditional but appropriate. The first ability is also great, however for green it looks a little out of place but none the less this is a worthy candidate!

Juice: 4 Power: 4 : Innovation: 4 Flavour: 4 = 16/20

Raptor - M

Creature- Dinosaur

Raptor can't be countered
(stealing a few old keywords)

When ~ enters the field, search your library for up to two other cards named ~, and put them into your hand.

Banding with ~.

~ Can't band with another creature not named ~.

~insert Jurassic park quote here~

The fact that you gave it banding! (a great and nostalgic ability) is awesome (even though its in a restricted form)! The 3/3 is perfect for how powerful the rest of the card is (thinking 'Slagstorm'). The GGG is perfect too. The search your library for up to 2... sets it aside from Squadron Hawk and Avarax etc....but seems a little strange to me.... and the flavour is a little lacking.

Juice: 5 Power: 4.5 Innovation: 3 flavour: 3 = 15.5/20

Lava Mouse

Creature - Rodent %Mythic%

Landfall- Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, Lava Mouse deals 1 damage to target creature or player.

When Lava Mouse leaves the battlefield, you may search your library for a card named Lava Mouse.

" Master, the fire awaits your command"

Love the Lava Mouse!! The cost is makes it perfect for many many decks, but Boros would have a field day! The flavour is spot on and the land fall ability is lovely! The only thing is the wording of the second ability- you may search but does it go into play or your hand? Or neither?

Juice: 4.5 Power: 4 Innovation: 3.5 Flavour: 4 = 16/20

Madtsoia 4GG (Mythic)

Snake Lord

When Madtsoia enters the battlefield, destroy all untapped permanents.

When Madtsoa does combat damage to a player, return a card from your graveyard to play.

"Its not venomous, it won't hurt you!" Last words of curious little goblins

Since you edited this in a later post (destroy all other untapped....)--tis all good. Sweet card: the 1st mechanic on it is great, the flavour is perfect and the power/toughness is just right for a big green trampling fatty! Just the 2nd ability seems a little over cooked. Returning a card to your hand would be more suitable perhaps (IMO) but it is still acceptable.

Juice: 4 Power: 4.5 Innovation: 3.5 Flavour: 4.5 = 16.5/20

Passenger Pigeon - W

Creature - Bird (Mythic)

When Passenger Pigeon enters the battlefield you may search your library for a creature with converted mana cost 2 or less and exile it.

When Passenger Pigeon dies, you may put a creature exiled with Passenger Pigeon on to the battlefield.

"Pretty soon everybody wanted Pigeon meat..."

This is simply beautiful. It is an extremely elegant design and sings of being a real printed card. Though it is a tutor (and we know how they get treated), its restrictions to CMC 2 creatures makes it playable, powerful but not broken, versatile and a pleasure (I imagine) to run.

Juice: 5 Power: 4 Innovation: 4 Flavour: 5 = 18/20

Card Name: Atlas Lion

Cost: 1W

Type: Creature - Cat

Rarity: Mythic Rare

If you control a forest, @ gets +1/+1 and has trample.

If you control a mountain, @ gets +1/+1 and has first strike.

Flavor: "The largest species of lion ever sighted by men."

Yup, Wonderful Zoo creature, I envisage turn 1:Windswept Heath, Taiga, Wild Nacatl, Turn 2: Wooded Foothills, Savannah, Atlas Lion.
The Flavour is great also. Because of its 'Wild Nacatl/ Kird Ape/ Loam Lion ness' however the innovation is a little lacking for me

Juice: 5 Power: 3.5 Innovation: 3 Flavour: 5 = 16.5/20

Mana Locust 3

Creature - Insect, 1/1 (Mythic)

Spend only mana of one color of your choice on Mana Locust.

Mana Locust is the chosen color.

If a player would add mana of the chosen color to their mana pool, instead put a token that's a copy of Mana Locust into play under that player's control.

A powerful mage broke into a magically isolated lotus patch once. They stripped him of his magic, and their offspring went out to strip the world.

This is a great card IMO. The ability is innovative and extremely powerful but given its restriction to a single colour of mana not broken. The flavour text is a little strange but Ok. The only problem is that it is not an extinct creature (Correct me if I am wrong).

Juice: 3.5 power: 4.5 Innovation: 4 Flavour: 3 = 15/20

Thylacine 2GG

Thylacine cannot be countered

Protection from Blue and Black

Haste, First Strike, Trample.

Whenever Thylacine deals combat damage to an opponent put a +1/+1 counter on it for each point of damage it dealt.

Beware the Tasmanian Tiger, if you were to encounter one 'YOUR' only chance of 'SURVIVAL' is to fight it, should you run you will be chased down and eaten with no chance of self preservation. - Warning sign

Good entry. Very stout combatant, hard to deny and to remove and a 'grower' to boot. Broken? Almost, but no in my opinion - with the prevalence of O-ring and Day of Judgement running round (Journey to Nowhere sees play a little too) this is good! The flavour is a little wacky but not bad!

Juice: 4 Power: 5 innovation: 3 Flavour 3.5 = 15.5/20

Haast Eagle 2WW
Creature - Giant Bird (Mythic)

Flying, First Strike, Vigilance

~ can't be blocked by creatures with power 3 or less.

As long as ~ is in play, creatures without flying can't attack.

W, (T): Return ~ to it's owner's hand.

Even the lion cowers when it hears the Haast's caw.

The Haast Eagle I read somewhere would lift Maori children up into the air then drop them to kill them for food. Power submission! Abilities all spot on, the return to the hand ability particularly. The 4/3 is well thought out-a significant setback for such a powerful card. The flavour of the card is good too!

Juice: 4.5 Power: 4.5 Innovation: 4 Flavour 4.5 = 17.5/20

Cat Pharaoh 1B

1/1 (Mythic)

Legendary Creature - Zombie Cat

When Cat Pharaoh enters the battlefield, put a legendary 0/1 colorless Mummy creature token named Mummy Bejeweled onto the battlefield.

Whenever Cat Pharaoh deals damage to opponent, you may exile it and the Mummy Bejeweled. If you do, put a black Pharaoh Planeswalker token named Tuttansorin onto the battlefield with 1 loyalty counters on it.

Tuttasorin's ability are:
+1: add one loyality counters.
- 2: Gain control of target creature an opponent controls until end of turn. Untap that creature. It gains haste until end of turn. This is a zombie creatures in addition to its type

"Pharaoh wanted to be buried with her cat. Now the cat returns the favor."

Wow! Innovative to the extreme and a wonderful mechanic even though (IMO) it would never be printed. The flavour is super too. It is not an extinct creature though and despite its innovation I question its playability. Overall though this design is great.

Juice: 3.5 Power: 3.5 Innovation: 5 Flavour 4.5 = 16.5/20

Grozoth Ape 1G

Creature - Ape M

When Grozoth Ape enters the battlefield, if you control a forest or a mountain, it enters with +1/+1 counter on Grozoth Ape. If you control a forest and a mountain, it enters the battlefield with 3 +1/+1 counters instead.

At the beginning of your end step, if Grozoth Ape attacked, put a +1/+1 counter on it.

Cool zoo/RG aggro card. Indeed it is similar to 'Atlas Lion' but I like the fact this one is a 'grower'!

Juice: 4 Power: 3.5 Innovation: 4 Flavour:3.5 15/20

The guardian of skull cave 2BB
Legendary creature-Dinosaurr--------mythic
When ~ enters the battefeild put a scent counter on another target creature.
Whenever a creature witha scent coutner on it dies, put a scent counter on another target creature.
T: Destroy target creature with a scent counter on it.

If it picks up our scent, we wont be the blood suckers in this skirmish-Anowen the ruin sage

Nice idea. An assassin/hunter of sorts--not sure it is much of a guardian though. None the less its ability is sweet. Also the 5/3 is appropriate.

Juice: 4 power: 4 Innovation: 4 Flavour: 4 = 16/20

The Mammoth

1WW - Mythic

Creature - Elephant

Whenever The Mammoth becomes blocked by 3 or more creatures, sacrifice it and put a +1/+1 counter on each of these creatures.

"Highly prized for its nutritious meat, the mammoth soon came to extinction once humans learned to hunt in groups"

This has amazing flavour. The otherwise vanilla card doesn't push the acceptable power threshold much however. Despite this the innovation required to create such flavour makes this one nice!

Juice: 4 Power: 3 Innovation 4 Flavour 5 = 16/20

Mexican Grizzly Bear (2G)
Creature Bear (Mythic)

Basic Land Walk

T: Add GG to your mana pool.

"Boss, they just declared the Mexican Grizzly Bear extinct." "Well we better take the bear meat burrito off the menu then." - Employee's at a generic Mexican food chain restaurant

I like basic land walk and the ability you gave it, other than that this is weak-oh by the way, racism sucks-lol.

Juice: 3 Power: 2 Innovation: 1 Flavour: 0 = 6/20

Atlas, First King of Atlantis 1UU

Legendary creature - Human (Mythic)

Whenever you tap an island for mana, add U to your mana pool.

Creatures without flying or islandwalk cannot attack as long as you have at least UUUUUU in your mana pool.

Never again had a civilization's power frightened its own gods. An example had to be made of them, before it was too late.

Quite a cool card. I questioned this one for a long time trying to work out if it was broken or not. Verdict: It is, the consistent acceleration would allow further means to protect it and the board controlling ability seems too powerful for the card's cost. Even though it would enable mono U (which I am in favour of) this is not the way to do it. The flavour is awesome though.

Juice: 4 Power 0(unacceptable Innovation: 4 Flavour : 5 = 13/20

Sea Cow UU

Legendary Creature - Dugong (Mythic)

As an additional cost to play Sea cow, reveal a white card from your hand or pay 3.

Prevent all damage that would be dealt to Sea Cow.

When a creature card is put into your graveyard from anywhere, you gain 2 life.

T: Draw a card, then discard a card.

"How can such a titanic creature be so calm and majestic?" - G.W. Stellar.

Great design. This is perfect for UW control. It offers itself as protector against aggro, as graveyard synergy creator and as card selection. The demand of showing a white card to make it cheaply playable is a wonderful choice too. Stellar's Sea Cow would have been amazing to see!

Juice:4.5 Power: 4 Innovation: 3.5 Flavour: 4.5 = 16.5/20

Reluctant Angel 4!!

Creature - Angel (Mythic)

( ! can be paid with either W or 2 life )

! : Choose a color or a card type . Reluctant Angel gains protection from the color or type of your choice until end of turn. You can't play this ability more than once a turn unless you pay ! .

"Hold on!"

Not really in the parameters of this competition, but a cool card none the less. Overpowered? No, sooo close though! The name is a bit off for the ability too.

Juice: 3 Power: 5 Innovation: 3.5 Flavour: 3.5 = 15/20

The Last Bali Tiger

Legendary Creature - Cat (M)

Haste, First Strike, Provoke

Protection from Black

R: The Last Bali Tiger is unblockable this turn.

Whenever The Last Bali Tiger enters the battlefield, sacrifice it unless you sacrifice a land.

This is sweet. The set back justifies its power adequately and the overall feel of this is cool. The cost is spot on and the unblockable ability is a nice addition.

Juice: 4.5 Power: 4 Innovation: 3.5 Flavour: 3.5 = 15.5/20

Golden Toad (G)(G)
Creature - Toad - Mythic Rare
Whenever Golden Toad attacks, tap target creature.
When Golden Toad dies, lose 1 life, and target player gets a poison counter.
"The Phyrexian invasion brought some unexpected visitors to Mirrodin."

I wish MTG had you on board when designing the come back of poison. This would work wonders. I do feel the tap ability is a little strange for green though, even still the flavour of this card is perfect.

Juice: 4 Power: 3.5 Innovation: 3.5 Flavour: 5 = 16/20

Denisova | 1WW

Legenday Creature - Hominin Artificer

When you cast ~, search your library for an equipment card with converted mana cost three or less, reveal it and put it into your hand, then shuffle your library afterwards.

Equipment you control have Living Weapon.

Whenever a Human enters the battlefield, sacrifice Denisova.

They may have been a species with superior tools, but competitive flare and cunning are adaptations that solely our ancestors have evolved to perfection. - Niwrad, Anthropologist

Am so glad someone did an ancient human. This is a powerful card but far from the brokeness of 'Stoneforger Mystic.' The power/toughness worries me a little but it is acceptable given Denisova's setback and prevalence of humans in the main formats these days.

Juice:5 Power: 4.5 innovation :3 Flavour: 4 = 16.5/20

Dire Wolf

Creature - Wolf

Battle cry
Battle cry

I hear the wolves howl
Only it isn't in the distance

This is elegant and powerful yet the innovation isn't really here.
Overall though, I could see this being printed, although not probably ran.

Juice:4 Power:4 Innovation :3 Flavour:4 = 15/20

Legendary Creature - Tiger
When Thylacine comes into play, you get an emblem with "At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice a Tiger you control."
Grandeur - Put two 2/1 red Tiger creature tokens onto the battlefield.
Formidable fangs. Powerful legs. Not much time left. They'll use both.

Wonderful design. The power of this one is spot on for its CMC. Without using the Grandeur it is a poor man's Spark Elemental. Using the Grandeur: it is an opener to be contended with! Fauna Shaman could help. Overall I like!

Juice: 4 Power: 4 Innovation: 5 Flavour: 3.5 = 16.5/20

Angry Birds (1RR)
creatures - bird (M)

flying, haste

Whenever <cardname> is dealt damage, that damage's controller sacrifice that much lands.

T: <cardname> and target creature of an opponent's control deals damage equal to its power to the each other.

Delalande's coua, Brace emerald, Giant Hoopoe, imperial woodpecker, javanese lapwing, tahitian sandpiper.. the list goes on, and they are angry for their damnation

Ya this is way overpowered sorry, none the less I like the LD aspect. It needs serious toning down however before it could be viable in any format. The flavour text is apt though.

Juice: 3 Power:0 (unacceptable) Innovation:3.5 Flavour 4 = 10.5/20

Thank you 4 this plausible Judging. Therefor congratulations to JaceMoves.

Just a short explanation on the protection:
A triceratops was pretty much invulnerable at its front, but if it was attacked from aside it was not tougher than any other dino. So i did chose to give it pro. blocking creatures to show of this issue. If it is attacking the triceratops dictates the rules of battle, therefor should be able to make full use of its shield.
Once you circumvent this, it is vulnerable. Well how vulnerable a 4/6 can be Wink

I like the Mana Locust, despite it's ridiculous complexity. As is, the original Locust will produce one token when a land is tapped. Once there are two, another tap of a land and you get two tokens, leaving four tokens in play. With four in play, tap a land and you get four more tokens, the next tap produces eight, the next tap produces sixteen, the next thirty two and so on and so forth. It seems like you should play it in a mono-colored deck and only ever call your own color, assuming your opponent can't lock you out of the game. Turn three: Mana Locust, turn four: make sixteen tokens: Good Game.

Best card ever...

I felt legacy needed a guy that could at least compete with Goyf. And yes it is similar to atlast lion but being able to get stronger through every battle seemed relevant to an ape.

Almost. Their descendants still exist, but the population surge while devouring the world's magic forces mass extinction. No more food, no more Mana Locusts. There would be survivors, but they wouldn't quite be mana locusts anymore. They need less magic and they begin to adapt to their new environment. Eventually this process forms the base of a nonmagical world with a few new species.

I probably should have stressed this in the flavor text instead of pointing out the card's relationship to the Black Lotus.

I made sure it wasn't quite that broken, but thanks for your support. Since Mana Locust uses a replacement effect rather than a trigger, their abilities don't stack. After one replacement effect applies, the others no longer have anything to replace (Mana was never added to a player's pool).

Ya I here by proclaim this is too long already betwixt Rounds.

If JayceMoves doth not posteth a new competition by the 14th--I personally, my personage included, will call foul and uneven mass shenanigans.

And if there be not an uprising sequestering ranks and colluding with distinct divisions I will nominate the honour fall to another to be our gracious host.
