The format was Build Your Own Block:

Second place deck was illegal and as such isn't shown here (it contained Lorwyn, Morningtide, Shadowmoor and Eventide although you may only ever have 3 sets in this format and Lorwyn/Shadowmoor and Morningtide/Eventide are mutually exclusive).

by Krastino on 2009-11-01 19:03 CET

Really? I was playing an old Fae decklist, so I just uploaded it...I didn't know I couldn't do bad. Next time I'll bring a legal deck :)

BYOB is BRING your own block...
you need to advertise it differently if you want "build"
any lorwyn block deck is totally legal and should be shown. please post your list in this forum so i can acknowledge you as the 2nd-place finisher.

by Eldariel on 2009-11-01 19:37 CET

Conki, this is what our "Formats"-page has to say about B.Y.O.B:

The difference between BYOB and normal block constructed formats is that the editions you use don't have to necessarily belong to the same block. Instead, you build your own block. As the block formats are build of the basic edition (for example Mirrodin in the MR-Block), and the following 2 expansions you choose any one basic set as your basic edition and any 2 expansions (as listed in Columns A, B, and C).

By what authority are you stating that "BYOB is Bring Your Own Block"? Either way, it was made abundantly clear in the channel by which rules we'll be playing.

Also, no source I've cross-referenced makes a distinction between Bring Your Own Block and Build Your Own Block. Hell, in our description of said format, BOTH NAMES ARE USED INTERCHANGEABLY.

by Conkisstador on 2009-11-01 19:42 CET

an all-lorwyn deck sould be recognized

by dwarfas on 2009-11-01 19:42 CET

god bloodghast is so overpowered it needs to get banned from block. Linn sivvi can get banned why not bloodghast? So redic. Card is such a hoser against control and it's still good beatdown and it counts as a vampire for vamps.

The main part is the haste.

I wonder how my deck would do against it. Emerald charm is going to be rough g2 and g3.

mom can protect my guys though. be interesting.

by Eldariel on 2009-11-01 19:46 CET

Conkisstador: An all-Lorwyn deck is illegal because Lorwyn contains 4 sets and you may only use 3 sets in Build/Bring Your Own Block.

Further, it's illegal because Shadowmoor is treated as a 1st set and Eventide is treated as a 2nd set by BYOB rules, and you may only have one 1st set (you can't have both, Lorwyn and Shadowmoor) and one 2nd set (you can't have both, Morningtide and Eventide).

This isn't just a case of semantics here; the deck is plain and simple illegal for the format and the format was announced abundantly clearly. What you're suggesting is akin to allowing an old Standard deck after rotation.

Are you perchance confusing BYOB with Block Party?

by Arkham on 2009-11-01 20:56 CET

I'm angry. I drew 10 lands in the first game and in the second i had an extinction and a hatred in hand since first turn with ritual and then no lands XD. I couldn't play both. Game is game. Bien hecho Magicrichi.

by dwarfas on 2009-11-01 20:59 CET

and that's why I don't like trials of this format too. people break the rules knock people off. Unfair to the people who got paired with him in preliminary rounds.

by Arkham on 2009-11-01 21:03 CET

dwarfas, last day in a legacy trial i saw after tournament ended the deck my opponent played me wasn't the same he registered. If people have a good time doing this they could go other part.

by dwarfas on 2009-11-01 21:14 CET

rec sur won't be beat in this format because of bloodghast owning control and the turn 4 Iona would shut most combo decks down. it has ways to deal with beatdown as well.

Actually portcullis could deal with it and that's it. only one deck out of 80 block and byob decks I have saved. how nice.

everything else deals with it post sb or tries to plow through early game. or runs annul or force of will.

But that's it a deck that beats 90%+ of the metagame. great.

by dwarfas on 2009-11-01 21:15 CET

Arkham it's your job to check codes. If he plays with a deck he didn't register with then fuck that.

Like sometimes people will ask your previous opponent what you played. fuck that.

by dwarfas on 2009-11-01 21:17 CET

What is totally awesome is how bloodghast is in every environment. like tarmo was and still is.

by Sebas_ on 2009-11-01 21:21 CET

go go rock old tech nice work!!!

by Terminus-Est on 2009-11-01 21:52 CET

Sorry, what? Rec-Sur beats everything? How about a deck with a respectable graveyard removal suite? The best part about bloodghast is that it comes back... from an empty graveyard? Oh right, it cant do that. The deck scoops to a g1 Leyline of the Void. Yeah, it has answers in the SB for Leyline and related things; but it cannot tutor them. Port, it can tutor for an answer (Uktabi), so I wouldn't rely on artifact-based answers unless they are redundant.

by dwarfas on 2009-11-01 22:07 CET

Yes, because leyline of the void is something people should main deck.

and portcullis is used in a deck with heavy counters and is something that hasn't seen play since rath cycle block.

So yes it does beat 90% plus of the meta.

So after sb if i bring in leyline or any other gy hate... guess what? emerald charm. 1 mana solution.

The fact that this one deck comes around and changes everything because it is such a hoser. is fucked.

you haven't even offered a deck that beats it. There's not many block decks that maindecked gy hate. I can think up of 1 maybe 2 and two more that had it for metagame reasons and it had cycling for other matches.

I want to main deck ground seal. It actually made sense in that block to main deck it since you would draw a card anyway.

the fact of the matter is you are offering nothing but reactive solutions to a proactive problem.

by RiQuSP on 2009-11-01 22:13 CET

Lol I lost round 3 against the illegal deck :(
Fix my rating plz! :D

by magicrichi on 2009-11-01 22:21 CET

i lose on the semifinals vs the ilegal deck ,check my rating to and the real name of my deck is assasins from lorwyn block

by Eldariel on 2009-11-01 22:24 CET

The deck you lost to, RiQuS, was perfectly legal.

by dwarfas on 2009-11-01 22:24 CET

It's better off to just play goblin bidding if bloodghast is going to be around. the worse thing that could happen is zomg crypt rat.

or turn 4 iona... but iona can at least get gempalmed/sparksmithed.

plus piledriver hits like a mac truck. at least gobbos has a flaw though. mass removal owns it hard.

by Djinn on 2009-11-01 22:25 CET

How come you guys didn't realise when playing? First thing I do when playing 'other' tournaments is checking my opp deck is properly built

by dwarfas on 2009-11-01 22:30 CET

i won a couple games in minis because I turn 1 duressed and was like wtf this isn't legal.

by dwarfas on 2009-11-01 22:48 CET

well welran broke the format. congrats.

by RiQuSP on 2009-11-01 23:00 CET

note to self: lern2lernread

by Conkisstador on 2009-11-01 23:15 CET

gidding is a good deck

by dwarfas on 2009-11-02 00:26 CET

Anyway I am just upset because one of the ways people dealt with the old survival recurring nightmare deck was by going dolla 4 dolla and removing your creatures so you never get a chance to use recurring nightmare.

So you might've ran urza saga for duress to get rid of wrath of god and your list might be more akin to an old t2 survival nightmare deck. or you did cabal therapy.

Now instead of relying on discard... you can take more pro active measures and bust out bloodghast... and even more pro active measure busting out iona to seal the deal.

what was already a good deck is now a fucking unstoppable powerhouse. yay.

by coolcreep on 2009-11-02 01:09 CET

I wish people would stop complaining about this deck. It won because people prepped for other good decks, and were unprepared. When people start packing copious amounts of GY hate to deal with this and dredge/ichorid variants, people will realize that, while a good deck, its not invincible. Survival discarding for ghast, discard ghast is a great play, but its not format-breaking.

by dwarfas on 2009-11-02 01:12 CET

so far gobbo bidding gets the job done except when i get hit with a crypt rat.

after sb elephant grass...

the funny thing is my gobbo impending disaster deck has a better chance game 1... it runs no bidding. instead it runs 4 impending disaster. no gempalm incinerator, but I do run 1 last ditch effort. At least it has thran lenses in the sb.

by dwarfas on 2009-11-02 01:26 CET

Ichorid isn't bad. because you could race it and be ok. Or you could play worship etc etc. you could even sideboard in your energy field and chillax.

But like this can bust out turn 5 iona and rape mode. like put it in your butt.

lets put it this way coolcreep

if he can't sac a creature for recurring nightmare... you don't get hosed. so one of the ways to deal with this deck was kill their shit. Now you can't do that?!?!? WTF? At least ichorid went away and required you to remove black cards from the game. That didn't promote synergy as well as bloodghast.

bloodghast is strait up card advantage. 1 land = 3 creatures.

Even in block and T2 bloodghast is such a fucking hoser when you get 2-3 of em. it is super gay.

by dwarfas on 2009-11-02 01:39 CET

the best thing is it's free. you don't pay anything there is no pre requisite. drop one of the 24 lands in your deck. how hard is that? In a multicolor deck ichorid is rough and involves paying more mana because usually if you want to whip out an ichorid you at some point have to spend G to pitch a black creature to the GY search your library for another.

you could run out of gas say against lightning rift or shard pheonix or grim lavamancer or even lose a race against goblins because of the somewhat harder prerequisite. you know getting your big guy out a turn later.

with bloodghast there is no running out of gas. Hell you got lands that return themselves for you and a quiron ranger.
it's just sad, that only a few decks in a huge format can stand a chance. that's all. gobbos with the best odds.

by dwarfas on 2009-11-02 01:43 CET

it's a casual format though. if people are going to play bloodghast and hose control decks like that. then I will play gobbos or something with planar void x4 main deck. otherwise I'll play one of the many fun and previously viable decks the format has to offer.

by coolcreep on 2009-11-02 02:34 CET

Bloodghast isnt 3 for 1 if you have a planar void in play.

by dwarfas on 2009-11-02 05:40 CET

suck a fucking dick coolcreep you act like every color has fucking access to planar void in every fucking set. you are a fucking moron coolcreep.

plus it's not even card advantage to play planar void.

by dwarfas on 2009-11-02 05:41 CET

Only few decks run a form of planar void maindeck. MBC from odyssey block in particular.

Some MBCs run sideboard main deck and use tutors.
Not every MBC from block sets used a form of graveyard removal or had a way to wipe a graveyard forever. Some had single target gy removal or haunting echoes. Haunting echoes is no longer really viable solution due to sorcery speed and it gets rid of 1 ofs only.

Turn 4 iona = GG and some MBC decks use single target graveyard disruption for bombs like that (which is nothing new). But when multiple bloodghast hit the graveyard it's over. so that kills a couple MBC decks.

Depending on which MBC you run odds vary. The disruption with MBC is viable against other decks... unmask, duress, cabal therapy, w/e If you run planar void you should run 1 copy and a tutors for your meta sb cards if it is to be main decked.

So great now I have to run silver bullet MBC decks with odyssey, or I have to run relics, or draw into coffin purge x2.

The UG survival deck counter part to that deck... match up didn't change much as far as strategy. counter his recurring nightmare/survival, drop tradewind rider and win, search for dominating licid and get it in play preferably before he gets his crypt rat hits the board and goes off on 4.

what did change is. you could sometimes previously in gangstatainment have both survivals in play and both players grabbing stuff and playing stuff at the same speed.

Now if he gets survival to hit the board he shoves 3 bloodghast to the gy... that's alot of pressure every turn... a damn ball lightning for free.

so what used to be an about even almost mirror match is now very much in favor of recurring nightmare.

so when I say he broke the format I mean it. the amount of decks left are not many.

Not alot of control decks can deal with bloodghast ball lightnings. Especially early game.

Bloodghast is super jizz in the face in t2 and block against control. especially when you draw into 2 or 3 of them. that gets out of control quickly.

it's really gay.

by Welran on 2009-11-02 06:43 CET

all best graveyard hate in a crappy sets which noone plays. and my deck was only deck heavily used graveyard in whole turnament. packing bunch of hate from bad sets against one deck isn't good idea.
and anyway this deck is good but it can lose too. I've played 2-0 only in final there my opp trys to beat me in second game with swamp and 3 mutavaults :D, all other games was 2-1

by dwarfas on 2009-11-02 07:11 CET

you probably only lost to beatdown.

skyshroud elite can help with that in some ways. in this format you don't deal with too many non basic lands. so I opted for a phyrexian walker in sb.

dropped 3 city of solitude for a bloodghast and phyrexian walker and 4th emerald charm perhaps another walker against beatdown.

I didn't like the 5/4 tramplers drawback. so he turned into mirri.

walker i think should see maindeck over vampire hexmage... and hexmage to the sb.

I hate having to use survival to get something, playing recurring nightmare and that's all my mana. the walker is free so you can drop it like it's hot and get poppin.
Necromancy is an interesting sb option if your opponent has good creatures to snatch up. perhaps I'll run that.

oh well. probably going to look down on block for awhile.
thank god the next call of duty is coming out.

Thank god for darker than black 2nd season.

I am so glad I quit buying magic cards. the ext metagame is small as hell and usually is my favorite format, but not when it is beatdown vs combo... and a couple metagame decks in between trinket mage, deathcloud, and idiot's life.

what's sad is if you play a deck that can't beat zoo then you're done.

by Epilogue on 2009-11-02 08:39 CET

i lost to the illegal deck round one. sighs.

by Epilogue on 2009-11-02 08:40 CET

oh but tht explains why no rating change =p

by Mitchmachine on 2009-11-02 10:50 CET

make a new rule, that you'r allowed to deckcheck your opponent after the round, so you can see if the deck is legal

by dv8r on 2009-11-02 11:33 CET

dwarfas, stfu please, noone likes a bad loser

by dv8r on 2009-11-02 11:34 CET

how does rec sur beat goblins for instance? name red? guess I kill it with my black removal spells, name black? gj vs the mono red aggro deck

by coolcreep on 2009-11-02 13:53 CET

@ Welran, Urza's Saga is a crappy set? Damn, never heard that one before. Also, guildpact has Leyline, champions has samurai of the pale curtain, Planar Chaos has extirpate, etc etc. Also, if you don't think ichorid still poses a legitimate threat, you are kidding yourself. Its not hard to hose a GY deck when it needs every set it picks up for the combo and cannot focus on resilience. I'm not saying your deck isn't good, but its not going to break the format the way some people are predicting.

@ Mitch, you are allowed at any time to ask what 3 blocks your opp is using. If you see a card not from one of those sets, grats on your win.

@dv8r, the problem is that they can keep bringing back bloodghast and reviving the iona. Unless your black removal RFGs Iona, and I can't think of an appropriate card, it is not a long term solution by any means. If he has his fog-weaver out, I would kill that EOT and just throw goblins through Iona and kill him that way.

by Welran on 2009-11-02 15:43 CET

"how does rec sur beat goblins for instance?"
why don't you ask how it can beat your vintage keeper deck. what br goblins you are talking about?

US see very little play cause most of it very good and broken cards banned in legacy and even more banned in block. I can see only replenish use US and I very doubt that it would use planar void. Leyline of void used only by orzhov deck that isn't that good. CHK ww is much worse then kithkins. relic of progenitus is in alara wich nobody uses. so only left some hate that isn't that good it is mostly just card for card trade. much more better enchantments hate that usefull against recsur and usefull in other matchups.

Ichorid isn't that good in byob. and graveyard decks isn't very popular in byob.

by Eldariel on 2009-11-02 15:47 CET

Ichorid is good in BYOB. Saga/Morningtide/Scourge Goblins can work, but Rb mana is a bit hard. That's why I didn't play it. Same with Zendikar/Morningtide/Scourge. Either way, Morningtide has a lot of worthwhile stuff for black Gobs (Frogtosser, Weirding, Earwig Squad, etc.).

by rafaruggi on 2009-11-02 16:06 CET

dwarfas is such a bad looser lol. He complains at EVERY trial.

by mchosa on 2009-11-02 20:58 CET

by coolcreep on 2009-11-02 22:02 CET

@Welran, Ichorid won the BYOB trial. It was a long time ago, ML trials are useless, etc. etc. etc, but it still did. And since dv8r pilotted it, I'm guessing it wasn't a fluky victory.

by Verystrait42 on 2009-11-03 00:21 CET

Lol, had I played it would have been Poison Slivers :)
