There will be more than 5 nonbasics in M10. Who's to say what the others will be, so speculating at this point is kind of useless.
Also losing Treetop Village hurts Elves greatly, without access to 8 ... |

The creature dies after first strike is dealt, since the creature is dead there is nowhere to assign regular damage.
So basically you gain 4 life not 8 since regular damage is not dealt.

4 life is too low to keep the lands tapped, He still has 5 land so you'll die to any combination of haste creatures and burn. Or just a Javelin.
