I'm fairly sure that there isn't a time that Guile can get Extirpated, but I read it on a post somewhere and wanted to be sure before the situation came up. I imagine that Guile's second ability never actually puts it in the graveyard, because of the instead bit. But magic has done whackier things.
So: Can you ever Extirpate Guile? |

Yes you can..
"When Guile is put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner's library"
Guile's ability triggers when it enters the graveyard. This trigger must go on the stack, allowing you to play Extripate.
The situation you are confusing this with is...
Replacement effects. Usually replacement effects will say: IF nd triggered effects: When |

Yes you can for the reason explained above.
The missing word is "instead".
"When Guile is put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner's library"
vs
"If Guile would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner's library instead"
An example of a card that can't be extirpated:
Legacy Weapon
If Legacy Weapon would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, reveal Legacy Weapon and shuffle it into its owner's library instead. |

| I agree that Guile can't be extirpated but it's not as simple as the missing word instead. It's the fact that Legacy Weapon has a replacement effect, so it never actually goes to the graveyard. Guile has a triggered ability, so you have a chance to respond to the trigger, at which point you're in the clear to play extirpate. |

ron: the word "instead"defines it as a replacement efect. also, the previous poster points to the full explanation above.
