I planned on doing a 4322, but it was not filling, where as the swiss had 6 people compared to me being the only one for 4322.

Draft went pretty well. Deck turned out solid and did not drop a game on my way to winning. There were 3 people besides me with a rating above 1800, 1 sub 1600 and the rest between 1600-1700.

Event #: 277780
Time: 4/3/2009 12:10:06 PM

Players:

------ 10E ------

Pack 1 pick 1:
Relentless Assault (FOIL)
Aggressive Urge
--> Spitting Earth
Highway Robber
Venerable Monk
Merfolk Looter
Canopy Spider
Sage Owl
Goblin Sky Raider
Angelic Blessing
Fog Elemental
Agonizing Memories
Sky Weaver
Furnace of Rath
Swamp

Its between the looter and the earth, i opt to take the removal.

Pack 1 pick 2:
Severed Legion
Lightning Elemental
Relentless Rats (FOIL)
Dehydration
Hill Giant
Afflict
Shimmering Wings
Goblin Piker
Holy Strength
Grizzly Bears
Recollect
Angel's Feather
--> Ambassador Laquatus
Forest
I love getting passed a bomb, the ambassador is a complete house and can win games.

Pack 1 pick 3:
Severed Legion
Lightning Elemental
Youthful Knight
Dehydration
--> Hill Giant
Afflict
Fear
Goblin Sky Raider
Suntail Hawk
Lava Axe
Relentless Rats
Time Stretch
Island

I expect the dehydration to table(it always comes very late, even as late as 13th), so i opt for the hill giant. A base red deck will make my spitting earth much better too.

Pack 1 pick 4:
Rampant Growth
Hill Giant
Venerable Monk
--> Aven Windreader
Stampeding Wildebeests (FOIL)
Youthful Knight
Terramorphic Expanse
Angelic Wall
Mind Rot
Smash
Agonizing Memories
Swamp

There is nothing else really in the pack, except a second hill giant. But the flier is much better.

Pack 1 pick 5:
Kavu Climber
Festering Goblin
--> Counsel of the Soratami
Raging Goblin
Honor Guard
Overgrowth
Crafty Pathmage
High Ground
Wurm's Tooth
Forbidding Watchtower
Forest

Go go card draw

Pack 1 pick 6:
Twitch
Kavu Climber
Festering Goblin
--> Shock
Naturalize
Swamp (FOIL)
Goblin Elite Infantry
Overgrowth
Steel Golem
Swamp

good sign to see late shocks.

Pack 1 pick 7:
Severed Legion
Lightning Elemental
Youthful Knight
Afflict
Vampire Bats
Smash
Wall of Wood
--> Ghitu Encampment
Swamp

Black appears open, but we will stay on course and take the land.

Pack 1 pick 8:
--> Samite Healer
Duct Crawler
Naturalize
Reviving Dose
Dross Crocodile
Aura of Silence
Megrim
Island

Nothing for us, so i hate the best card.

Pack 1 pick 9:
Aggressive Urge
Venerable Monk
Sage Owl
Goblin Sky Raider
Angelic Blessing
--> Agonizing Memories
Swamp

once again, nothing for us (i dont like sage owl and would prefer to hate a card that will make us lose)

Pack 1 pick 10:
Shimmering Wings
--> Goblin Piker
Holy Strength
Grizzly Bears
Angel's Feather
Forest

good 2 drop

Pack 1 pick 11:
Youthful Knight
--> Dehydration
Goblin Sky Raider
Suntail Hawk
Island

just as i thought.

Pack 1 pick 12:
Youthful Knight
Angelic Wall
--> Smash
Swamp

good sidebaord card

Pack 1 pick 13:
--> Raging Goblin
Crafty Pathmage
Forest

Pack 1 pick 14:
--> Goblin Elite Infantry
Swamp

Pack 1 pick 15:
--> Swamp

------ 10E ------

Pack 2 pick 1:
Rampant Growth
Highway Robber
Skyhunter Patrol
Viashino Runner (FOIL)
Viashino Runner
Civic Wayfinder
Mind Rot
Smash
Holy Strength
Fugitive Wizard
Rage Weaver
Mind Stone
Elven Riders
--> Ascendant Evincar
Island

I felt like it was in my best interest to take this card, as there is no way i would be able to beat it. And since this is swiss, odds are i would face the person with it.

Pack 2 pick 2:
Rampant Growth
Highway Robber
Skyhunter Patrol
Dehydration
--> Viashino Runner
Civic Wayfinder
Smash
Wall of Wood
Shimmering Wings
Angelic Blessing
Knight of Dusk
Goblin Lore
Legacy Weapon
Island

Efficient Dude

Pack 2 pick 3:
Sea Monster
Llanowar Elves
Mass of Ghouls
--> Spitting Earth
Loxodon Mystic
Aven Fisher
Suntail Hawk
Lava Axe
Elvish Berserker
Cancel
Threaten
Sculpting Steel
Mountain

more removal

Pack 2 pick 4:
Samite Healer
--> Shock
Recover
Kavu Climber
Pacifism
Scathe Zombies
Goblin Elite Infantry
Overgrowth
Tundra Wolves
Wall of Air
No Rest for the Wicked
Island

and even more..

Pack 2 pick 5:
Giant Growth
Ravenous Rats
Aven Cloudchaser
--> Prodigal Pyromancer
Stalking Tiger
Plague Beetle
Pincher Beetles
Lumengrid Warden

this guy is nucking futs

Pack 2 pick 6:
Heart of Light
Benalish Knight
Rootwater Commando
Contaminated Bond
Natural Spring
Vampire Bats
Shimmering Wings
Relentless Rats
--> Ghitu Encampment

dont know if i will play two with the spitting earths, but there isnt much else to take.

Pack 2 pick 7:
Kavu Climber
--> Pacifism
Rock Badger
Honor Guard
Overgrowth
Crafty Pathmage
Regeneration
Soul Warden
Mountain

very good card, and very late. Have to take it even with it being offcolor.

Pack 2 pick 8:
Ravenous Rats
Ghost Warden
Viashino Sandscout
Cloud Sprite
--> Distress
Raging Goblin
Dragon's Claw
Island

i think its the best card, couldve takne the claws, but i think distress would hurt my deck more. As nailing my draw spells or removal could be crucial.

Pack 2 pick 9:
Rampant Growth
--> Viashino Runner
Mind Rot
Smash
Holy Strength
Fugitive Wizard
Island

Late for him..

Pack 2 pick 10:
--> Rampant Growth
Smash
Shimmering Wings
Angelic Blessing
Goblin Lore
Island

Pack 2 pick 11:
Sea Monster
Suntail Hawk
Elvish Berserker
--> Cancel
Mountain

late cancel <3

Pack 2 pick 12:
--> Scathe Zombies
Goblin Elite Infantry
Tundra Wolves
Island

Pack 2 pick 13:
--> Lumengrid Warden
Holy Day
Forest

--> Natural Spring
Island

Pack 2 pick 15:
--> Mountain

------ 10E ------

Pack 3 pick 1:
Rock Badger
Essence Drain

Skyhunter Prowler
--> Sift
Uncontrollable Anger
Horseshoe Crab
Scathe Zombies
Demolish
Warrior's Honor
Vedalken Mastermind
Nantuko Husk
Stronghold Discipline
Beacon of Unrest
Plains

I need the sift, even tho i wanted to hate the rare.

Pack 3 pick 2:
Rushwood Dryad
Lightning Elemental
Gravedigger
Heart of Light
--> Merfolk Looter
Phyrexian Rager
Contaminated Bond
Goblin Piker
Demystify
Sage Owl
Phantom Warrior
Stampeding Wildebeests
Hurkyl's Recall
Plains

now we have some good draw.

Pack 3 pick 3:
Severed Legion
Lightning Elemental
Youthful Knight
Dehydration
Hill Giant
Afflict
Mind Rot
Demystify
Robe of Mirrors
Canopy Spider
--> Thieving Magpie
Ornithopter
Forest

and even more..

Pack 3 pick 4:
Anaba Bodyguard
Sift
Ravenous Rats
Aven Cloudchaser
Honor Guard
Lumengrid Warden
Distress
Viashino Sandscout
--> Overrun
Hate Weaver
Fountain of Youth
Island

Same logic as the evincar pick. Looks like there was only one green drafter. And if i faced him i didnt want to have to face the overrun. I wouldve loved a second sift, but my deck cant handle overrun aside the 1x cancel.

Pack 3 pick 5:
Craw Wurm
Aven Cloudchaser
Counsel of the Soratami
Ghost Warden
--> Prodigal Pyromancer
Tundra Wolves
Llanowar Sentinel
Peek
Hunted Wumpus
Enormous Baloth
Swamp

dubs is nice.
Pack 3 pick 6:
Twitch
Craw Wurm
Samite Healer
Swamp (FOIL)
Skyshroud Ranger
Warrior's Honor
Peek
Plague Beetle
--> Discombobulate
Mountain

another effiecent counterspell.

Pack 3 pick 7:
Rock Badger
Unsummon
Giant Spider
Demolish
Cloud Sprite
--> Terramorphic Expanse
Plague Beetle
Regeneration
Mountain

in case i wanna splash pacifism.

Pack 3 pick 8:
--> Bogardan Firefiend
Bandage
Wall of Wood
Terramorphic Expanse
Angelic Wall
Lure
Tempest of Light
Mountain

i was short on dudes, so i opt to take this guy over the second expanse.

Pack 3 pick 9:
Rock Badger
Horseshoe Crab
Scathe Zombies
Demolish
Warrior's Honor
--> Vedalken Mastermind
Plains

protects my win con (ambass)

Pack 3 pick 10:
Rushwood Dryad
Heart of Light
--> Goblin Piker
Demystify
Sage Owl
Plains

fills out the deck nicely.
Pack 3 pick 11:
--> Hill Giant
Demystify
Robe of Mirrors
Ornithopter
Forest

nice late dude, we are looking great now.

Pack 3 pick 12:
Honor Guard
--> Lumengrid Warden
Viashino Sandscout
Island

Pack 3 pick 13:
--> Aven Cloudchaser
Tundra Wolves
Swamp

Pack 3 pick 14:
--> Warrior's Honor
Mountain

Pack 3 pick 15:
--> Mountain

In the end i decided not the run the pacifism and just go with a more consistent build that can cast all my spells with UU.

deck was pretty straightforward. I played both cancel and discombulate.

Round 1:

vs 1800ish

His deck was very very good. 3x pacifism, 2x hail of arrows, 1x terror, and very effiecent fliers.

Both games were just me trading my removal for his fliers. Stalling the ground out, and then playing ambass with counterbackup for terror. I was able to mill him both games. Doing enough damage was impossible because he had starlight invoker and loxodon mystic.

Round 2

vs 1800ish

He is playing RU splash black for essence drain?(only black i saw, and he played 2 swamps game 2..so idk, he couldve had more then that). He had 2x Icy and wall of air in play game, so once again combat was hard. I won game one by stalling out the game and casting ambassador with 9 lands in play. Game two i have a pretty good hand, and overwhelm him with superior cards. Eventually winning with 2x runner and a mancer.

Round 3
vs 1704

His deck is 4 color green. I win the roll and curve out with Piker, mancer, hill giant, windreader. I have removal for his hill giant, and he is dead just like that. Game two he mulligans on the play, leading out with 3 forests in overgrowth. On his fifth turn, after mising a land drop on turn four with no play, he plays civic wayfinder to get a swamp and passes without playing it, this blunder leaves him too far behind as ive already estasblished board control and had counters and removal left in my hand. He scooped the next turn when he realized he couldnt stop my 2x runners.

I open to comments and criticism. Thanks for reading!.

The only point I could see a clearly better pick in the draft was Pack 2 Pick 6, where you should have taken Rootwater Commando over the second Ghitu Encampment. Other than that, nice draft Very Happy

This draft worked out really well. Pack 2 had like, no decent red for a few picks then all the sudden pinger? Strange kind of.

As far as cancel, i think it works MUCH better in a blue red build, where your dudes fight worse than any other color combo, and so a counterspell can be used in many different ways effectively, instead of just using it when they play something relevant.
