This started out as strictly esper, but it was slow as all hell and could never get there on mana consistantly. The Dramanimator deck it put me in mind of Chapins DoranBant deck with Hierarch. I thought, why not?

The goldfishing has gone well enough and the speed issues seem to be fixed. The base feels a bit shaky, I could use some help with that. Doran just seems so wonderful for the deck. It gives it an early game and makes the Leviathans and Angels so much more deadly. So I needs me some help. Thoughts?

Do you have enough discard outlets to reanimate? Is it clunky if you don't draw rotting rats?

A reanimator deck consists of the following three parts that needs to be present for the engine to work:

A. Win conditions that are worth the effort
B. Discard outlets that lets you put A in the graveyard
C. Reanimation spells that puts A from graveyard into play

Since you need ALL THREE for the deck to do anything at all, you should not keep a hand that does not have at least two of three in it. And then you need to draw into the third in the first four turns.

Now let's look at your deck.

A. 3 Inkwell Leviathan, 1 Magister Sphinx, 1 Empyrial Archangel (total of 5)

B. 1 Corpse Connoisseur, 4 Rotting Rats (total of 5)

C. 4 Makeshift Mannequin, 3 Beacon of Unrest (total of 7)



The chance of getting one of each in this deck is way too low. The amount of C is okay, but the two others are about half of the necessary amount.

The best B cards in Standard right now are Merfolk Looter and Ghastly Discovery. They let you draw into A and C while performing B's task, and that function is paramount to any Reanimator deck.

Besides, the toughness-enhancing ability of Doran is unimportant because having two biggies out at one time may be overextending in some matchups. 2 Birds of Paradise is a waste of card slots. Run 0 or 4 (you want it turn 1, and if so, you need more than 5 ways of getting birds in play turn 1. Bosk doesn't count with only 4 treefolk).

Birds is better than Noble Hierarch in this deck, but I would cut both it, Hierarch and Doran in order to make space for the Reanimation theme, which requires around 30 cards of your deck. Either that or I would run Doran Rock and cut the Reanimation theme.

this deck could win with turn 2 doran

OK. Point taken on the number of reanimation targets. The more I thought about it, the more I disliked the conoissuer as a tutor. He's far too narrow to really be worth it. I figure Vess would be better as it helps all 3 parts of your ABC formula, namely A and B.

I like the Rats over other enablers like Looter and Prowler, because of unearth. The current meta, my local one especially, is full of counterspell based control. They can counter the Rats once, but I will still get my discard, barring remove from yard effects. I must note something you all seem to be missing, I count Epser Charm as a discard outlet. It says 'target player' not opponent.
