Typically the chase rare cards are chase rares to begin with because they are good in every format, and since formats like Legacy don't shift much, something being automatically good in Legacy means it's going to be good for a while.
If you are just looking at getting a Type II collection that won't be a waste of time after rotations, then here are some good examples-
Tarmogoyf - I know they're pricey but he's -that- good.
Thoughtseize
Mutavault
Wrath/Damnation
Pithing Needle
Extirpate
That's just a few...if you are planning on buying some older cards, you first need to ask yourself if Extended is all you're interested in (it is a pretty common ptq format, so it's a worthwhile interest to have if you want to play competitively) or if you are willing to shell big bucks to play Legacy competitively also. If you are just interested in Extended, then keep in mind that THIS october Extended is rotating with the next block, which means that Invasion, Odyssey, and Onslaught blocks will no longer be extended legal. So for example you may not want to buy Onslaught lands like Flooded Strand if you are not going to play them in Legacy.
That being said, there are quite a few good cards from Mirrodin up that will still be strong in Extended, and it really depends on your play style what cards you should pick up..it's probably not worth it to buy a bunch of aggro cards -and- a bunch of control cards for a huge and expensive format like Extended. But just to name some cards for both off the top of my head...Dark Confidant, Loxodon Hierarch, Gifts Ungiven, Chrome Mox, Ravnica shock-lands, Umezawa's Jitte, ...etc. |

| Why would 3 different blocks rotate out of Extended after 1 block rotates in? I believe you that that is the way it works, I just don't think it should be, since in Standard one set knocks only one out, why would it be different for Extended? |

Extended is supposed to bigger than Standard in every way, and basically it transitions in the same style, just with blocks instead of sets. When Standard rotates, it loses 3 sets; Extended loses 3 blocks on rotation. But it rotations much less often - Extended is "defined" as 6-8 blocks just like Standard is 4-6 sets. So when whatever after Lorwyn comes out, it'll be 9 blocks, so then it's cut back to its minimum (just like Standard) to 6 blocks. It's quite a wallop, but that's just the way Extended is defined. This is the first substantial rotation since 2005.

It makes sense; you can't make the pool too big or you'll just end up with more bannings like in Legacy. |

Please don't post false info about extended.
1. Rotation change
Extended no longer rotates every 3 years, it rotates every year now.

2. If you must buy anything, BUY FREAKING LANDS. Without lands, u can't do a thing. Fetchland would only last you 1 more year until 2009. Ravnica dual lands are the Truly Must for extended. |
