Alright... so this is a crazy complicated question:

Cairn Wanderer reads: As long as a creature card in a graveyard has flying *this* has flying. The same is true for landwalk and protection...

So... let's say there's something with protection from black in the graveyard, giving wanderer protection from black. Could I use Mind Bend on the wanderer to make him have Protection from Green? Or is that silly because the card in the graveyard is what causes the protection, and it would have to have pro green?

Since no color word or land type appears on Cairn Wanderer, there's nothing for Mind Bend to change. So no, that doesn't work.

caird wanderer's ability is a characterisitc-defining-ability. all of his traits are locked into that one ability.
you cannot mind bend or sleeight of hand etc.

you can however give it protection from deserts and from "3 or greater"

Can we like ban Trotsky? Cairn wanderer's text does not change when it gains an ability, and since mind bend affects the text on a permanent, it cannot change the ability of wanderer.
