On the stack it depends which half you played. Outside the stack it has 2 mana costs, behavior is dependent on effect asking for mana cost of that card. Fire/Ice revealed by Dark Confidant means 4 life, boom/bust revealed for Counterbalance counters spells with CMC 2 and 6.

its not that easy i belive, you can imprint fire/ice in insochrom scepter. If you flip it to confi the mana coast is 2 and 6 for boom/bust so its 8 total. But like i said you can imprint fire/ice on scepter. But i am no judge and i am not sure how all this is handled exactly. (if you want to counter a boom/bust with a e.g. spellsnare i think you dont need to pay 8 as x. I think that 6 as x would work, maybe even 2 would work. But all i say is woulda coulda shoulda.
Maybe some judge make things a little clearer. I also struggle to that abit.
edit: yea i am a bit late |

The CMC of Boom/Bust is not 8. If you're playing the spell, it has the CMC of whichever half you're playing. If you're not playing it (it's in your hand, library, graveyard, etc.) It has a CMC of 2 and 6.
This means naming "8" with void won't cause a player to discard Boom/Bust, but naming either 2 or 6 will.
Revealing Boom/Bust with Dark Confidant will cause a player to lose 2 life and 6 life (for a total of .
Revealing an 8 cc card with counterbalance won't counter Boom/Bust. You need to reveal a 2cc to counter "Boom" or 6cc to counter "Bust."
etc.
Hope this helps. |

Is Research/Development an instant with a CMC of two or less? Yes? Then you can imprint it. That it also has CMC 5 doesn't matter. And yes, you can play either half with Isochron Scepter.
Also, if you want to learn everything about split cards, read this article. |
