might be a stupid question, but can you play that ability from the graveyard? j/w since it didn't say anything about it being in play to return it to your hand. |

it actually works the other way around: unless the card mentions being able to play a creature's abilities from the graveyard, you can't do so. |

| there's permanents and there's spells in other zones. permanents have abilities. spells don't unless they say they do. |

Eh... spells only exist on the Stack. In zones besides the Stack or In-Play they are simply 'cards'.
And everything written on a card that's not in italics is an ability. No matter what zone the card is in. It just usually doesn't do anything unless it is in play (for most cards) or on the stack (for sorceries and instants).
402.1. An ability is text on an object that’s not reminder text or flavor text (see rule 400.1). The result of following such an instruction is an effect. (See rule 416, “Effects.”) Abilities can affect the objects they’re on; they can also affect other objects and/or players. Abilities can grant abilities to other objects or to the objects they’re on; they do so when the words “has,” “have,” “gains,” or “gain” are used.
402.8. Abilities of an instant or sorcery usually function only while the object is on the stack. Abilities of all other objects usually function only while that object is in play. |

| Masked Admirers and Haakon are good examples of cards that have a function while in the grave. There are others but I don't have the time right now to look them up. |
