So, me and this guy played some "Spurt" today. I had never played it before, but I have played other formats like it. For those not familiar with it, the way it works is this:

Each player plays off the same deck. The deck is basically a 500 or so card Highlander deck. You have your own graveyards. And that's about it. Everything else is played out like a regular game of magic.

Okay, so my biggest mistake was giving him Palinchron. I had Sensei's Divining Top in play and I didn't want him to get Black Vise because I had a bunch of Karoo lands in my hand and had a full grip of cards, nor did I want to give him the Teferi that was sitting on top. So I put Palinchron on top for his draw phase. Little did I know the evil that was lurking in his hand already...

So a few turns after that while I spend several turns looking for ways to deal with his damn Chandra, he plays Sterling Grove, then Mirari's Wake. Then untaps and plays Arcanis the Omnipotent. Then, after I've got him down to quite a bit of low life with my Angel of Despair that I searched up, I play Nevinyrral's Disk because he hints to me that he is going to kill me in two turns.

What ends up happening is this: He untaps, gets infinite mana with Palinchron, plays Supply/Demand for Aura Shards, gets more infinite mana with Palinchron, killing Disk, a Chrome mox on my side of the board and my Sensei's Divining Top, which of course I flip, then he does some wacky stuff with Yavimaya Elder (this is what caused me to not like him - Cheating in a casual game, plus there were several discrepancies about his life total). He plays Elder, and sacks him to draw the top, but I correct him and say he gets the lands first, then draws, so he goes to get the lands and then draws and, Miraculously, draws the the top. I had told him he needed to spend the infinite mana he said he had produced with Palinchron, that he argued with me he didn't have, he just said he had access to it. So he knew he needed the top.

Anyway, so here's the kill:

Sac Sterling Grove for Mind over Matter...

Draw with Arcanis.
Play Mind over Matter.
Untap Arcanis.
Draw with Arcanis.

You get the point?

Okay, draw the deck.
Play Akroma's Memorial.
Play every creature in the deck.
Attack.
GG.

While I was impressed with the win, I walked away from that game really wanting to punch him in the face for being so shady in a casual game.

Just thought you might be interested.

Good story-telling, or least better than the monster one-paragraph stories that are usually posted. Me and some friends of mine play games similar to that, but we never knew what it was called.

Oh, and that is a pretty kewl kill.

Even though you are correct with the timing of the Yavimaya Elder, it wouldn't matter if he had the Top or not, he can still draw every card in the deck with the Arcanis + MoM combo, he would eventually get to the Top.

Technically you don't have to generate infinite mana from Palinchron, you could choose to untap less land, and therefore would not take damage from manaburn.
"When Palinchron comes into play, untap up to seven lands."
You can choose untap 0 lands if you want and as the card does not say "untap...tapped lands" and it can be used on already untapped lands (with no effect).

What would have been funnier if he played every creature, then played Tendrils of Agony.

Yeah, I guess that would have been funnier with the Tendrils. Thing is with Palinchron, he said "I'll go infinite with Palinchron." I don't know about you, but to me that means he has an arbitrarily large amount of mana in his pool. And he has to spend it or he'll die. He didn't know how he was going to spend it when he got it, he just said he's got it.

When he got Aura Shards, he was still moseying around trying to figure out how to kill me, with an arbitrarily large amount of mana in his pool. He didn't know what to do, he panicked when he realized he wasn't going to get the top off the Elder. That's when he tried to argue that he only had access to it after he stated he'll go infinite. Observers chimed in and told him he did state he'll go infinite. Neither one of us though of just playing Palinchron a bunch of times.
