i think it would be awesome to give go the ability to update itself with new card sets and data bye in the app so instead of going out and downloading the set patches you just go under like options/update and boom you got all the new sets.

read up on this. from my understanding GO can generate its own new patches from oracle. If this is true its just plain awesome.

Yep, its true.
with the mtg set manager, under tools, Create patch from scratch..

It then downloads all the sets from gatherer into a temp folder and parses the html files into a database

But we'll probably make an updater mechanism like mws too.

I think this system is better than the way it is done with mws. You are not dependant on a third party to produce the patches, and make things happen. This way you yourself are able to make things happen. No need to wait for someone else.

However WotC can just change the way gatherer works.. in this way you've shifted the need for someone providing new masterbases to the need for someone updating the update engine of the program. While this would probably require less updates, since gatherer is not going to change every new set, it makes the program unable to be updated one day that the developer will leave the scene. With the MWS system, instead, even if with some tricks, we can update the base ourselves.

Obviously you can still make a 'patch' manually, like mws, just open the cards.data in notepad and see how simple each line is..

MTG Set Manager is open source for whoever wants to "improve" it, just ask for the code, so any changes wotc makes on their output can easily be taken into the output parser.

it wont be long now, draft is working, all that needs to be done is think of a way the player gets the cardpool to edit/add basicland etc.

it's like sealed, but the cardpool needs to be "picked" first.

google can tell you more.
