First of all, I'm not a tourney-goer so I don't really know all the rulings on the more commonly played cards plus I learned from friends who are also not tourney-goers. However, something struck me as odd that happened in a game I was playing today.
Long story short, my opponent had two mongrels out and discarded 4 cards (2 of which were basking rootwallas). He then attacked me with what should have been (at least I think) a 6/6 and a 2/2. However, he was insistent that they were both 6/6 and that he could discard one card for use of both mongrels' effects.
I always assumed you couldn't pay two costs with one item (mana, card discarded, whatever). Is there some crazy and obscure (or maybe not so obscure) rule that allows this to happen? Or was the guy just trying to cheat? |

| You are correct, and he was trying to cheat. |

Alright, I figured that, but I wanted to make 100% sure... He seemed rather confidant that he was right (simply saying "lolllllllllll" and leaving the game).
Incidentally, I had a tapped Door to Nothingness in play, and a Joiner Adept on top of my library. Short of any counters/removal, I'd have won next turn anyway, even if I had taken the 12 damage he wrongly demanded I take.
Come to think of it, he did play a circular logic with no cards in the graveyard and attempt to counter a Skyshroud Claim with it...
Anyway thanks for the reply. |

You can play Circular Logic without any cards in the graveyard just fine. It just means it'll cost zero for you to not get the spell countered.
It's a more common method of the not-so-honest to get away with something. You wouldn't believe how many people just put the targetted card in the graveyard without checking to see how much they would need to pay. It's not officially cheating, but it's not very nice either. |
