When you "play the removed card without paying its mana cost", does the removed card go on the stack?

Anytime you "play" something that isn't a land, it goes on the stack.

Do spells played via hideaway land ability follow the normal restrictions on when a spell can be played. e.g. playing a creature during combat, or a sorcery when damage is incurred, etc. THanks.

No. You are playing them while an ability is resolving. Normally you couldn't play anything at that time. You play the card as the ability resolves, right then and there.

The only exception are lands. You can only play lands on your own turn and when you haven't played a land yet, no matter what.

...and if the stack is empty, and it is your main phase.

No, if you play a land from under your Hideaway land, it doesn't have to be your main phase and the stack doesn't have to be empty. Normally for lands, yes. Required, no.

It is required in the rules that it is your turn and you didn't play a land yet. Lands are the only card type that have such requirements/prohibitions put in the rules.

All other types have rules that allow you to play it at a certain time, but none that forbid you to play it on other times.

Oh, I misunderstood what you were saying. Yes, you're correct. I thought you were saying in general for lands, rather than in specific for lands under hideaway lands.

My bad.
