Problems connecting using Magic Apprentice and Hamachi

I am having a problem connecting with a friend using Magic Apprentice. We are both behind firewalls and I have set up port forwarding and Hamachi on both machines, as well as disabling firewalls, yet despite my best efforts we are unable to connect. When I attempt to call him I get the message

'Winsock error #10053
Software caused connection abort.'

Also, I don't know if it has any relevance, but we are both using ports other than the standard 4747 to connect.

Edit: Also since this my the first time using magic apprentice, I am not sure as to whether this problem is specific to connections between me and my friend or whether it is a problem with using apprentice period. If someone wouldn't mind taking the time to connect with me using magic apprentice, it would be much appreciated as it would let me know if I can establish a connection with Apprentice at all, and would help me troubleshoot this problem.

It might just be me, but I though Hamachi was for people who couldn't use port forwarding. Try w/out hamachi?

Well, you see, what happened was we tried port forwarding, and that didn't work - so then we tried Hamachi, and that didn't work either.

Anyways, now I'm just trying to see if I can connect to anyone at all.
