if someone was stalling you should have reported it to a judge, there is nothing you can do about it now

seems fair to me. he did nothing for 1 minute but that time could also have been used to take his turn, and time would still be called in his turn so it doesn't really matter.

stalling works like this:

-in game warning
-judge warning
-game loss
-matchloss

--------------------

so.. warn them for playing slow, then go to judges, when time is called, u might get a 1-5min added playtime to round.... if they do stall alot.. then it becomes a game loss

---------------------
most people play slow b/c they are playing more than 1 game at a time....

I don't think you have conclusive evidence he was stalling. He could have been checking the time during that time. And if the has lands untaped and cards in hand, he has a play.

it does seem strange that he mentioned that he will end up winning when time is called and that he will be the active player then.

why hasnt this adopted a 5 turn rule yet?????

I had a game where we both were capable over being at higher life at end of our turns...but the other player was watching the clock and stalled to sync it so he would win. I didn't know i could call him on stalling...but despite...playing legit it would still come down to whoever wasnt willing to give the other person a turn during time would win...a 5 turn rule would be much better and fairer. You can put together a last ditch effort in that time...versus (well ill attack him with everything next turn and win the life totals...but he wont pass).

wow MACC you just seem like your the stereotypical annoying opponent. repeating go over and over and commanding your opp to play fast is no way to warn them from stalling and is just bad sportsmanship.

Well, it does look like stalling to me, seeing as he claimed he would win over 2 minutes before time was called.

MACC, despite being an annoyance (sorry, but nagging won't make me play any faster), was actually *trying* to play faster, even if he was nagging.

But the other guy just looks like he was drawing out his turns so that it would end up being his turn for the win... kinda lame newb way to win, but it's legal I guess cuz it really does make it near impossible to prove....

I agree with the 5-turn rule, or even just a 3-turn rule, cuz the tide of any game can be changed by one or two smart, well-timed plays... alas, that will probably never happen... *shrug*

MACC has a point. i hate to be rushed, but in a tourney setting, with a (imo) harsh time limit, stalling is a very real issue that hasn't been properly dealt with. ive been to my share of tourneys (online and off) and the time limit is always a tough issue. even if no one is deliberately stalling, is 50 mins enough for lifegain, martyr, or even control to win without being totally stressed for time?

It doesn't help to post this on the forums. Nothing can be done now. If you think someone is stalling, inform your TC and ask for an extension or a warning. It hardly helps to wait and complain on the forums afterward, unless of course you're just a sore loser and want consolation.

I wanted to respond to this though, since it's actually a pretty interesting question. I'll give some advice to players out there: Concede if you need to.

I've been playing Omnichord in T2 lately, and usually Omnichord can win quickly once they have control, but sometimes it can be a pain (for example if my opponent resolves multiple Troll Ascetics and I resolve plenty of wall of roots, etc, they can't attack but neither can I as the board gets more and more gummed up).

If you're playing aggro, you're out of cards, and I'm sitting across the table with a grip full of seven with a bunch of counterspells, 26 life, and the board is locked up, concede the game. I don't know how many times players will sit there, dropping lands or llanowar elves or other useless stuff, while I counter the key threats and let the rest resolve, until a win condition finally shows up and they lose.

If you are 99% sure that you're going to lose game one to a control deck and you let the game eat up 30 minutes of the game clock, it is your own fault when time gets called. Always keep in mind you need to win two more games if you lose the first one, give yourself time for that. It's especially important for control on control mirrors, where it might just take you 40 minutes or longer to win two games.

Understanding the time limit is part of a turnament. When I used to play at a local card shop, people counted on it. They'd bring a Sligh deck, go 1 and 1 in a round. Take a long time to sideboad, then the last game would be a minute or two. They'd lightning bolt before the bell and win.

Is it annoying? Yes, is they something you can do about it? Not really. You claim 5 turn rule would fix it, but meh. The place I played at had the 5 turn rule, never really did much. As a player, you need to compensate.

I played control, so I added in more win conditions to speed up my wins.

Think of it like Net-Decks. People going online and getting a deck list from a successful player and buying the cards for it. It sucks, but there really is nothing to be done about it.

I've personally never had a problem with net decks. People take pride in building and using something of their own creation, but the simple fact is that studying the strategy of top players is part of every single sport and strategy game.

If you go to a football game, you'll see teams using similar plays. Why? Because they've all learned what works.

A lot of players have similar techniques for layups, three-pointers, and free throw shots in basketball.

For strategy games, try going to a chess tournament an calling someone "noob" when they open with Queen's Gambit, or going to a Settlers of Catan tournament and complaining when your opponent starts on 8/5/10 ore/wheat/sheep, or going to a Diplomacy tournament and complaining when Italy starts with the Lepanto Opening, and you know what? Everyone else at the table will laugh at you until you go home crying.

Why? Because good players realize that any given game does have optimum plays (even with a game with as much variation as MtG!) and it's absurd to use plays that are less than the best just to be "original" if you want to succeed at the tournament level.

Hey, Avata

You may be right if all you care about is winning.

But it is SO much more fun when you win using your own strategy (for me anyway).

If using net decks sucks or not is not for anyone to rule about.

I, for myself like to build my own decks. I'm restarting playing after a LONG LONG period and I barely know the cards and the top-strategies and I know it would be easier just taking some "fast food" net decks and playing some simple-minded strategy (like aggro-burn).

But to me it just is not fun. And to me that's what MTG is about, "fun", not "winning".

Just a thought, but I think that sometimes too much caring for winning takes away the fun and makes people fight over all kind of little issues.

[]'s for everyone.
