To be perfectly honest, the reason I play is merely to win, the higher the level of the event and the higher my final place the more I enjoy it, this is why I have recently almost stopped going to fnm's and such as the level of play is so low and there is no fulfillment to be had beating scrubs.

Hit the nail on the head for me. FNM for me is a group of tons of people that are lots of fun to play with. For a $7 entry fee for constructed, it's easily worth the value (by comparison, a 2 hour movie costs about $9, and FNM is a solid 4 hours of entertainment), and for the other formats the difference in price ($8 more for drafts and $18 more for sealed) is almost always made up for by the cards we get and the prizes we win. Going to more competitive tournaments is fun too, but it's the FNM (and playing on Thursdays at home with some of the guys) that really makes it worth the investment.

After I quit playing irl last year I felt like I was in too deep and yea I definitely feel like it is a money drain. I realized when I got back in this month that it's a great game and I really love to play it but I will stick to MWS and 2-headed giant.

So my answer is a) fun and a bit of c) I have nothing better to do, because that's when I usually log on.

I hate trading. I want to play Magic, not memorize prices and do homework every week on countless cards and get ripped just because I want to build a constructed deck.

Why do I play?
-I like to build/tune/tweak decks.
-I enjoy watching/playing a good game(however few times they come around*sad face*).
-I enjoying the process of analyzing a metagame and identifying/building/tuning a strong deck against it.
-I enjoying discussing the strategy of the game with people.
-Its a good way to meet people with similar interests
-Its a good fall back for a slow Friday night

Why do I hate the game:
-the D&D style flavor of the game and the negative stigma it attracts
-the randomness of the game (mana screw, inability to draw business cards to save my life, going against an bomb ass hand/uber sealed deck)
-the money

I agree about deckbuilding and metagaming, those are two of the funnest aspects of the game. And the money is definitely an issue, I personally blame Wotc in large part for making so many bad cards and for continually printing color fixing lands at rare which is just a huge ***slap in the face to every magic player.

I'm very surprised about the D&D aspect which you find unattractive, because I am totally indifferent to it. I guess I'm just out of the loop.

I like part of the randomness since that's sort of the reason Magic is interesting and because that randomness favors more focused or aggressive decks. It also rewards good deckbuilding. But yea, then again it's the randomness that can randomly give a win to a horribly built deck by giving it an unusually good draw against a far more consistent deck.

After all I was the one who said that Wotc should make lands stronger because pretty much all drawbacks with Magic gameplay come down to lands. (manaflood, manascrew, colorscrew, and of course the rarity of duals, saclands, etc that pretty much double the level of entry to constructed)

I gotta say, it might be kind of weird but I think I enjoy the theory/discussion of the game probably more then I enjoy playing it.

Well it's the same with me to a degree. I was just talking about Magic's design just now and I actually enjoy coming up with Magic cards.

And as for quitting cable - I don't watch TV, I have the internet instead.

honestly, i am amazing at this game and love beating people.

and, i am amazingly good looking.

and the females love me.

it is very satisfying to go into a PTQ and bring along ur super hott girlfriend that is only there cuz u told her to come and end up top4ing and beating a bunch of fat smelly nerds. i mean, they get furious that you beat them, and then they get FURIOUS that i'm super good looking and brought along a super hot girlfriend.

ok, ill admit, i love the thinking part of it too.

but i love beating people and rubbing it in their faces the most.. especially because i am good.

I don't get people who bring their girlfriends to Magic tourneys if they don't even play. One would think they are just trying to prove that they're not a nerd. Or your reason. Either way, it's dumb.

Well, you ask a perfectly Valid question. Be careful not to stereotype, though. Did you know a person can play magic, AND have a girl/boyfriend?

I play cause Im a Timmy/Johnny, if you know what I mean.

From my observations, Spikes have girlfriends more often than Timmies/Johnnies :B

It always seemed to me that Spikes are generally less nerdy and more confident/outgoing.

That's why tournament Magic is AWESOME.

i play magic to make people with worse lives then me KNOW that they have worse lives then me. telling people how bad there constructed deck choice is or their draft picks makes me hard, i also have an uncontrollable urge to 'bro rape' people are pre-releases

I think it has something to do with the fact that Spikes play more because of the competitive aspect and Johnnies/Timmies like the fantasy and the more geeky stuff in general.

I guess this question can be generalized by:

Why do you <enter random hobby here>?

Why do people build modeltraintrack+environment?
Why do people collect dolls?
Why do people pimp their car?
Why... why... OH DEAR GOD WHY!!!!!

One of the many reasons could be to express your creativity.

I enjoy looking at a collection of cards and find some form of synergy between some of them, but needles to say, as soon as I find them, the whole world already knows about it and someone probably already won a big tournament with it.

I suck at magic btw, I truly do!
Yes, I _could_ be a decent judge if I wanted to become one, simply because knowing the rules and knowing how to apply them is a whole different game than finding that one winning deck nobody is expecting to be facing, therefor, not being prepared for it.

And that is the beauty of this (online/sittin'-at-a-table) game, there are so many aspects.

-You can become an oldskool player that plays with $ 10000,- decks in Type 1 tournaments.

-You can become the person that "breaks the card", finding that one combo that's gonna turn the meta game.

-You can become the average T2 netdecker, that has enough money to just buy the cards you need as soon as someone comes up with that deck to beat, created by the previous "You"

-You can become a (wannabe) pro player, traveling all over the world, meeting all kinds of interesting people, seeing all these (nice) places, this would require some skill and some larger budget.

-You can become a factor in the MTG communitie by setting up a great website where people can talk about the game, share ideas and play against each other using software like GO, MWS and Apprentice.

-You can become a fan of the game, that simply does not play alot, because you are too busy writing software for the game, so that maybe one day, you can use this software to become a (better / good) player.

This last person is me Smile

Realizing I totally suck at the game and can't do anything better than netdeck, I decided to put my energy and TIME in the non-playing part of the game. There were websites the plenty when I was thinking of what to do, but the general thought about mtg software on these website (M-L, Salvation, etc) was that most of em had something missing (multiplayer, draft, an endless list of bugs). That's when I decided to give it a try and now, almost 2 years later, we @ project-GO feel generally satisfied with the result, yet there is a lot more to do.
Someday I hope, by analyzing the games other people play (learn by example is what beta's are good at), to become a skilled player, with money to spend on the game as well.
(I need to bitchslap my boss for a payraise, although I doubt I'll get one considering Im writing this post, that is turning out to have the length of an article, in my boss' time)

In short, I guess people have MTG as a hobby because they want to be part of the/a community, in wichever way, shape or form that may be.

As for the stereotype goes, it takes a rare pool of genes to be creative, smart and goodlooking Wink
You can't have it all people, live with it.

Untill next time!
