As most of you know, Legacy replaces extended in this year worlds.
Competitive mtg is very new in my country, wizards is giving Airplane tickets only since PT Honolulu, but we have traveled to all PTs since then except Kobe (and we had a top75 in worlds )...
The trip to New York is cheaper than Japan or Europe, so many of us really want to go, but the problem is: Legacy....
We have had 0 Legacy tournaments here since I play mtg (like 4 years) and well most of us have little knowledge about this format, and we dont have Legacy cards available for trading... so the point of this thread is:
What are the tier1 decks for legacy?
Which cards should we buy now, before their price raises up?
Thanks. |

| The tier one decks in legacy are solidarity, bw pikula, faerie stompy, threshold and goblins. Goblins, and pikula being the easiest and cheapest to build. There are also many tier 2 strategies and other tier one strategies that i didn't mention, but these are the most popular. SCG has a huge list of decks for legacy, but don't play the ones that include the card Flash because it has been banned since that tourney. |

| I know Flash is banned... I dont play Legacy, but I read the coverage from GP Columbus and I think that after this banning the metagame is completely different. I was asking for decklists and cards that I should buy... |

Here's a list for a Faerie Stompy that has always worked well for me:
4 City of Traitors
2 Seat of the Synod
5 Island
2 Faerie Conclave
4 Ancient Tomb
4 Sea Drake
4 Cloud of Faeries
2 Sea Sprite
4 Serendib Efreet
3 Trinket Mage
1 Pithing Needle
3 Psionic Blast
4 Force of Will
3 Umezawa's Jitte
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Chrome Mox
4 Sword of Fire and Ice
3 Thirst for Knowledge
SB: 1 Sea Sprite
SB: 1 Trinket Mage
SB: 1 Pithing Needle
SB: 3 Winter Orb
SB: 1 Cursed Scroll
SB: 2 Tormod's Crypt
SB: 3 Misdirection
SB: 1 Engineered Explosives
SB: 2 Binding Grasp
Force of Will is a must buy, seeing as you'll be playing some sort of blue splash unless you end up playing Gobs/Pikula/Life etc. |

Goblins are relatively great......
Even with Flash they top 8. Without they top 8.
It cost a bit, but it is one of the decks to beat and has been for 5 or so years. |

| Legacy has the most wide open metagame of any format when Flash in not present. Go to mtgthesource.com to find everything about Legacy. SCG does not have nearly as much. Have fun with Legacy (the greatest format in magic), and I'll see some of you probably at Worlds. |

The thing with Legacy is that, as long as you know what you're doing (i.e. don't build your deck without metagame considerations and such), you'll be able to succeed even with homebrew decks (as Pikula showed us back at Philadelphia). The archetypes you'll want to be aware of, though:
-Vial Goblins of all varieties (Rg, Rw, Rb, Rgb, Rwb, Rwg, Ru)
-Threshold-based strategies (UGw, UGr, UGb, UGrw)
-Standstill-based strategies (UW, UWgb, UWg, UB, UWb, UBg)
-Life from the Loam-based strategies (GW Armageddon, RG Devastating Dreams, 43 Land-Manabond)
-Lion's Eye Diamond-based strategies (Ill-Gotten Gains-combo, 5c Burning Wish-combo, GR Goblin Charbelcher/Empty the Warrens, Suicide Tendrils w/ Culling the Weak et co.)
Survival of the Fittest-based strategies (RGb Survival, RGw Survival)
-High Tide-based strategies (Reset-High Tide, Cloud of Faeries/Snap-High Tide)
-Ancient Tomb-based strategies (Blue Chalice-aggro, White Smokestack-control, RG Smokestack-control)
-Dark Ritual-based strategies (Br Suicide with Bolts et co., Bw Confidant with Confidants, Vindicates et co, Mono-Black stuff from the other two decks minus splash)
-Argothian Enchantress-based strategies (Replenish-variants and straight Enchantress)
-Aluren-based combo (UGb or UGbr Imperial Recruiter)
-Arcbound Ravager-aggro (Blue/Artifact Chalice of the Void, BRU/Arti Fling, BRUg/Arti Berserk)
-Humility-based Control (Mono-White, Wr, Wg)
-White Weenie-strategies, Zoo-strategies, all the classic varieties of aggro really
And that's just the decktypes that have been finishing well at the various points of the near history. |

| www.mtgthesource.com should give a good idea on what decks people play and other insights. |

mtgthesource is a very good page thx
And what do u think is the deck that has the best matchup against Goblins?? I think many people who quialifies for worlds and dont know nothing about legacy will play goblins (just like boros at ext last year), so what would be the best tier1 deck to play in a meta full of goblins? thx again... |

Well, Tier 1 decks with good Goblin match-ups are the combo-decks as well as Red Threshold and some Landstill-builds. UGr Thresh has a nice advantage over Goblins in the SB Pyroclasms and combo-decks are just faster than Gobs (although Goblins usually have ~8 hate-cards for you on the sB). If you really want something solid that absolutely stomps Goblins though, I suggest some WW-variant, since those decks are able to MD ridiculous amounts of Goblins-hate. I've built an RW Quake-deck that MDs 7 Earthquake-effects (4 Rollings, which hit flyers too) along with Exalted Angel and all such. Also, the deck contains Chalice of the Void MD so combo match-up isn't bad, especially with dedicated 8 to 11-card SB against it. Just something to consider; if you really want to stomp Gobs, that deck is for you (you can find it in New & Developmental).
But out of the tier one, I'd probably pick up UGr Threshold if you consider yourself a good player (it mostly does very well against combo-decks while also stomping Goblins and being at a disadvantage against its white brother). Playing Threshold allows you to leverage your skill more than playing combo, while playing either CRET Belcher or TES will give you more broken openings (and more hate to deal with) and more auto-win match-ups. They also give you room to outplay your opponents against disruptive decks that are actual games, but Threshold allows you to utilize skill even more. |

i am going with two others from Prague.
Legacy is very good format. Best to build with i think. It's also very open in terms of "Tier 1". Thresh and Gobs of course, Pikula, Iggy, anything with a metagame. Only metagame worth it is something for the Graveyard. Leylines (+Serum FTW!!!), Grunts, Wretches, Tormod's.
I play a homebrew version of Froggoid which while ppl think its a Tier 1, its more of a 1.5 I still think Froggoid is far better aggressive deck than Goblins or any other aggro. On the other hand theirs MANY crappy ways to build and play it (Bridge/Nacro in 1.5 is great example of this)
Rogue decks are the strongest in the format as well. Gawd I love Eternal. |

| counter slivers in my opinion would be the best deck to bring to worlds. most of the fanatical pros will try to break the format with an unknown combo deck. counterslivers has a good matchup versus all kinds of combo decks and has a much better clock then most other aggro control decks. not only that but it creatures are usually untargetable or have some other way of evading removal.it has a good goblins matchup which will show up in large numbers because many people who are new to the format and just want a powerful deck use it. bottom line is that in such a wide open field you want a deck that has a good matchup versus aggro, combo and aggro control. that is what counter slivers does. to find a good decklist go to the mtgsource or to the magic decks section here. |
