| So the situation is this: I work 40 hrs a week. My GF is in school 5 days a week (college nursing) and when we are together and arn't out we are looking for something to do together. I brought her to my local shop (which I havn't been to in 4 years so that doesn't say much) and we got a few packs of Pirates. We brought them home and had a fun night of building and sinking ships. Now I still wanna play MTG at like FNM and such (and to give you an idea, when I quit I was playing Fires with blastoderm so....I have NO NEW CARDS) but I want her to get involoved with me. I think she would enjoy it and its a good activity before we hit the bars past midnight and such. Any suggestions as to HOW I can get back into the swing of things WITH her with me. Personally I was gonna pick up two precon decks to teach her and if she likes it enough, jsut buy a FUT and TS booster box and we can share the cards to help her learn and I can use them in FNM till shes confident enough to play her own decks......any suggestions folks? |

| build her a sliver/budget boros/mga deck and let her gold fish a couple of games w/ you giving her small tips along the way. Worked for my current gf when I tried to get her involved. The key is to give her something that isn't as complicated as solidarity or iggy pop but also isn't completely gimped and has a chance to win and at the same time be forgiving of some missplays here and there. Also I'd advise starting w/ sealed as far as limited goes if she seems to be at all interested in mtg at all because draft can get a little intimidating if the rest of the pod is younger and less patient. |

Does anyone else find it alarming that nurses are out hitting bars after midnight?
Seriously though, my suggestion would be to play plenty of casual games before taking her to FNM. Even in the relatively casual environment there, it would still suck for her to get her ass handed to her by a lack of understanding in timing rules, etc.
Another solid way to teach might be to build several precon style decks, but focus each one on different card types (make sure one has a lot of instants, one has a lot of sorceries, one has a lot of enchantments and artifacts, etc. - but make sure they all have creatures) so she gets a feel for the different card types and colors.[/b] |

Right on... I did the same thing a few years ago.

2hg is the best way to go if you want to have fun together in magic. The only problem is the lack of tournaments in that format, so maybe you can ask the shop owner to run some 2hg giant tournament now and then, preferably in a limited format.

| My girlfriend loves to play magic with me... so long as she wins. I basically built her a nasty affinity deck, but threw in some meddling mages to force her to learn some cards from outside her deck. It seemed easiest to get her into it by approaching her with a very casual attitude, I just started recently teaching her all the tournament types and what they mean. So far so good. |
