If you have played the format at all, you'll soon realize that if the control deck misses a single land drop, they lose the game fairly quickly.

Also the card drawing is not as spectacular in TBC as in Standard, so you have to make sure you hit your land drops. Stalling at like 5 mana in a control vs. control fight is murdur in this format wich Draining Whelk is staple in.

I think it's because all the pros suck.

As said already, you can't afford to miss landdrops since the player with more mana can cast more bombs and therefore win more, especially due to the nature of the Flashback-cards in control. Then there's the whole Urza's Factory-thing going on. Basically, control-decks want to do as many as 8 landdrops without necessarily resolving a single card drawing spell. It's fairly elementary really, in a format where you expect lots of control mirrors, you want lots of lands to hit landdrops. And since the colourfixing is rather horrible here, it helps there too. And makes Urborgless Tendrils of Corruption better while at it.

decks with 27 lands + primastic lens are "card specific".
They don't need tons of cards to answer to a game context, they need the appropriate ones. This means that they have to use teachings and careful consideration to get the card they want to answer properly to situations. That requires mass mana pretty early in the game. In addition thoose game tend to play 4 colors after SB, which is hard to fix with no shocklands.
Stocklands are key cards in control/control, so you need to play lots of them. But then ur mana is harder to fix and u need more lands.
Urborg is the key combo card with tendrils, but u can only put one into play at a time, therefore it could lead to shortage if playing only 22 lands and drawing 2/3 urborg.
Careful consideration is their in the midgame if u start to got to much land to recycle them by discarding them for other cards.
In addition aeron chronicler/ detritivore and counterspells matchs require a lot of mana, and in thoose situations, the one with the more mana get the better from his cards.

Last but not least, if you try thoose decks, you'll see that you always have something to do of your mana, teaching for teaching loop, mishra factory, teferi with backup.
All of thoose moves costs a LOTSOF mana.
Even a flashed teaching for tendrils and then playing tendrils, which is a "standard eot move" costs 10 mana.
