For T1, T1.5 and to certain degree Extended, having a set of "to-have" cards make sense: you can pay a lot into a group of cards you'll end up play again and again until you stop playing Magic. You pay a LOT in the short run, but then you pay almost nothing as the game evolves (that's vintage case: entry level is really high in money, but maintenance is negligible).

For other formats like T2 and block, having a set of certain "good" cards make little sense: it all depends on the deck you want to play, and since it will be legal only for few months generally, you'll probably won't want to have ALL good cards, just the one you need for the deck(s) of your choice. Differently from Eternal formats, entry level is reasonably cheap, but maintenance is a constant need of money, and cards you've bought lose almost all their value when they rotate out, differently from Eternal when instead what you've bought even tends to go higher in prices and almost become an economical investment.

True, but in T2 it makes a lot of sense to get all the lands. dual and painlands are absolute musts, and gemstone mines help. I'd also try to get a playset of tron.

yeap revik u've seen more on other forums before. Very Happy

ehmmmm.. yeah that makes sense Malhavoc. but theres also the possibility of cards being reprinted (pain lands, birds of paradise) and theres just simply plain quality cards that u must get no matter what format u play (dual lands as they help ur mana base).

in any case what cards would u recommend players should collect Malhavoc?

For T2, cards that you should have playsets of include,

Birds of Paradise, and Wrath of God.

After that, nothing else stays around long enough or is worth enough to warrant it as a must have.

Duress and Cabal Therapy for sure in everything up to Extended. I see them used in every format they are legal in. I guess Counterspell/Mana leak for ext and down FoW for Legacy and down. Pain lands, shock lands, dual lands. WoG. P9 would be nice, but people can dream. chrome mox(maybe). But mainly the 2 discard cards.

Birds of Paradise will never be printed again, So it isn't really a staple anymore.
