If a 1/1 creature without flanking blocks an attacking creature with flanking, it dies. Is the attacker still blocked?

yes. Once a blocker is declared, no matter what happens after (unless otherwise stated on a card), that creature is blocked. The -1/-1 from flanking is a triggered ability after blocking occurs. It's just like burning a creature after it is declared a blocker.
