I play magic alot with a kid from my town who uses an akroma based deck and we seem to always have a conflict on what we think akromas protection really protects her from.

Scenerio:

I'm using a multi-player Bg golgari sacrifice deck with a savra+shambling shell field lockdown. he has his akroma out I sac my shell with savra in play and he says that he doesn't have to sacrifice his akroma due to the fact that it was a black ability that would make him sacrifice it. Akroma was his only creature.

who is right? please any help is greatly appreciated!

The protection from black only:

Akroma can't be TARGETED by black spells or abilities.
All damage from black sources is reduced to zero.
Akroma can't be blocked by black creatures.

Savra's ability does not target the Akroma. It doesn't target anything. So if Akroma was his only creature, he would have to sacrifice it.

You are correct.

Protection reduces damage to 0, prevents enchanting/equipping, blocking, and targetting.

Savra isn't doing any of those things.

Diabolic Edict gets around protection too.

D D E B T

damage is always reduced to 0. 3 pyroclasms will do nothing to the angel.

You should really call it DEBT and with one D and take out destroy. Pro-white does not protect from global destroy effects like Wrath of God...the other kind of destruction being damage or targeting both of which are covered in DEBT - damage, enchant, block, target.

Protection does not prevent destroy effects.

The D in the DEBT acronym stands for Damage. Destroy effects like wrath still hit pro white creatures, and plague wind will still hit akroma.

Never say "always" ... With resolved Flaring Pain 3 pyroclasms will kill Akroma.
Protection is not reducing damage but preventing ... rule 502.7e
