I don't know how many of you used to read Inquest, but back when I played magic in RL, I loved that magazine. One of my favorite parts were these complex magic puzzles featuring I BELIEVE Eugene. Here would be in impossible situations and it would be up to you to solve them. Well, I decided to try and make such a puzzle for you M-Lers out there.
_________________________________________________
Situation:
Eugene's little brother gave him Jank.dec, a type 2 deck for his upcoming friday night magic. Not knowing much about magic, Eugene took the deck and signed up. After a short and sweet first game loss, Eugene gets preped for game 2 and rolls a 1. Figures. But not all is lost. Eugene doesn't seem to be doing much damage, but he has lasted a very long time and to his suprise is still alive! Now, he faces a certain death. His opponent is at 32 health, and Eugene is at a lowly 1. But he still wants to go out with pride! He may not be able to win, but if he could clear his enemies board of creatures, he could at least feel a tad bit proud of his accomplishments. Can you help him out?
It is his mainphase, and he has drawn for the round. The first thing he did was cast index revealing the last 5 cards in his deck. Using this knowledge, can you help Eugene clear his enemies board of creatures?

| Quote: | | Eugene's available mana at start |
13 U from 13 Island
9 U/W from 1 Calciform Pools
3 U/B from 3 Watery Grave
1 U/R from 1 Steam Vents
| Quote: | | Creatures opponent control at start |
1 green Elephant token (Call of the Herd) 3/3
1 Knight of the Holy Nimbus 2/2
1 Loxodon Hierach 4/4
1 Akroma, Angel of Wrath 6/6
To start with, the most problematic creatures on board are Akroma and KotHN. Akroma has to be bounced, and to conserve mana, same goes for KotHN. Also, it can be assumed that the opponent has no ways to counter Eugene's spells since he is tapped out.
1. Suspend Lotus Bloom.
2. Tap 1 Island, play Clockspinning but do not allow it to resolve.
3. Tap 2 Island, play Remand targetting Clockspinning. Clockspinning is returned to hand. Draw the first Repeal.
4. Tap 4 Island, play Clockspinning with buyback, removing a time counter from Lotus Bloom.
5. Repeat step 4.
6. Tap 1 Island, play Clockspinning, removing the last time counter from Lotus Bloom. Lotus Bloom comes into play
7. Tap Calciform Pools, use it to remove all 9 counters from Calciform Pools (8U), play Repeal targetting Akroma, Angel of Wrath. Draw the next Repeal
| Quote: | | Remaining: elephant token, KotHN, Loxodon Hierach |
8. Tap and sacrifice Lotus Bloom for blue mana, play Repeal targetting Knight of the Holy Nimbus. Draw Nightshade Assassin.
| Quote: | | Remaining: elephant token, Loxodon Hierach |
9. Attack using one Looter il-Kor. Let its trigger resolve.
(a) Draw Dark Withering
(b) Discard Nightshade Assassin
(c) Tap 2 Watery Grave to pay for NA's madness cost
(d) As NA comes into play, reveal Dark Withering from hand, and aim the -1/-1 at Loxodon Hierach
10.
(a) Tap Steam Vents, play Rite of Flame (RR)
(b) Tap 1 Island (RRU), play Fire Whip using UR, enchanting one Looter il-Kor.
11. Tap the enchanted Looter il-Kor to deal 1 damage to the opponent.
12. Stack Looter il-Kor's trigger and let it resolve.
(a) Draw Fiery Temper
(b) Discard Dark Withering
(c) Tap 1 Watery Grave to pay the madness cost of DW
(d) Aim DW at the elephant token
| Quote: | | R floating; remaining: Loxodon Hierach (3/3) |
13.
(a) Discard Fiery Temper to Trespasser il-Vec
(b) Use the floating R to pay for FT's madness cost
(c) Aim the 3 damage at Loxodon Hierach |

And since Eugene has done his part, let him go out on a high.
14. Sacrifice Fire Whip, deal 1 damage to himself.
GG! |

Well ckgds, that would be nice and all, but you missed the sacred mesa with 3 tokens! (In hindsight, I think it woulda been clearer if I made a pegasus card and put 3 tokens on THAT) but try again, you are close.

Because apparently Eugene is an idiot. And apparently so am I. But the real reason is more than likely explained if you look at the clock in the screen shot =P |

| well in the case of the tokens he just has to target them with the whip and use the assassin on the the last token. Fiery temper the elepahnt token instead and dark withering the heirarch and in the end he is still left without critters. |

Hm, I now relize what I did wrong, because I knew ck's way used up 2 more mana than required. The problem is, I thought the buyback on clockspinning was 4 not 3. So youve accually been given that extra 2 mana for no purpose!
Theres an alternative way to do it for 2 mana less, if you want to try and find that.
But the more I think of it, the cheaper and cheaper I can do this. In acuality, I don't think you need the bloom. Which is absolutly terrible if thats true!
Wow, I managed to solve it using only 5 islands. Well, what I really want to here is if you like the CONCEPT. I'll work harder at making tougher and cleaner puzzles if you guys do. |

Well I used all the nonbasic mana as well, including the pools. But out of the initial islands, I only used up 5.
And if I told you, I'd ruin it :< |

| maybe I am missing something here, but what is the point to put all those mana and effort to resolve the lotus =/, cant you just not clockspin and leave the lotus in hand? |

It would have been better if you actually put out the 3 Pegasus tokens instead of putting 3 counters on Sacred Mesa. I was doing this at 2am in the morning. |
