A couple of friends and I are building a Magic set in a wacky, three-part way. Which is to say, each of us is building a third of the set with little to no information shared between us. Of course the set is gonna be a disfunctional disaster, but it's a fun little game. One thing I did share from my piece of the set, which was enjoyed by both the other guys, was my keyword mechanic. I thought I'd throw it out here, see what people who are not my friends thought.
It goes like this:
Cascade <cost> (For the rest of this phase, you may pay <cost> rather than pay the mana cost for spells with cascade that you play.)
Cascade is a secondary ability attached to a spell that does something else, much like storm or ripple. To give you an idea of what <cost> is like, the cards with cascade in my piece of the set are a cycle of common instants that cost 3C and have Cascade CC. |

So say it's like this.. I play
Dog 3g
cascade

So the next spell I play:
Cat 3r
cascade
2/1
Only costs 4 to play instead? |

No, it's more like this:
Dog 3G
Cascade GG
2/1
So the next spell you play:
Cat 3R
Cascade RR
2/1
...could be played for either 3R or GG. Then the next spell you play:
Mouse 3B
Cascade BB
2/1
...could be played for 3B or GG or RR. |

| A bit confusing, but very cool. In the context of the set it should be fine, but it has potential to be really broken. |

In the interest of letting people figure out how broken it is, let me list off the five cards with cascade that are in the set.
Note that unlike ripple, cascade has no built-in mechanism for acquiring additional cascading cards, and none of the cards I made have card drawing in their primary effects; if you want to set off a massive cascade, you'll have to draw/search it out first. At the same time, though, notice how the five of them "Megazord" together to create a pretty massive attack, should you be able to fill your hand with five specific cards of all different colors with twelve mana available...
Inspiring Warsongs 3W
Instant
Untap all creatures you control. Creatures you control get +1/+1 until end of turn.
Cascade WW
Mesmerizing Tales 3U
Instant
Tap up to four target creatures.
Cascade UU
Breathless Gasps 3B
Instant
Breathless Gasps deals 3 damage to target creature and you gain 3 life.
Cascade BB
Treasonous Rumors 3R
Instant
Gain control of target creature until end of turn. Creatures you control have haste until end of turn.
Cascade RR
Rustling Leaves 3G
Instant
Put three 1/1 green Cat creature tokens into play.
Cascade GG
There is also a sixth, "honorary" cascade card...
Swarming Steelbugs 3
Artifact Creature - Insect
Pay the cascade cost of a spell you played this phase: Put a +1/+1 counter on Swarming Steelbugs. Play this ability only once each turn.
