just wanted to start the tread... i loved playing fires when it was around and i was wondering if anyone thought that it might be able to make a comeback? now, i do know that blastoderm and saporling burst are gone...but.. with the ravnica block there are some power house creatures...does anyone think that fires can become a viable deck once again?

and if so... lets brainstorm on how to bring it back

This might sound really wierd, why not just run UR and do anger & wonder for the win? I figure if you want to start an update of an old deck we need a list of the old one and then find alternatives that are close enough to the format we're looking at.

Zvi Mowshowitz's Fires
Pro Tour - Chicago 2000
2 Dust Bowl
10 Forest
4 Karplusan Forest
5 Mountain
4 Rishadan Port

4 Birds of Paradise
4 Blastoderm
3 Jade Leech
4 Llanowar Elves
3 Two-Headed Dragon
4 Assault/Battery
4 Chimeric Idol
1 Earthquake
4 Fires of Yavimaya
4 Saproling Burst

Sideboard
4 Kavu Chameleon
3 Earthquake
3 Flashfires
2 Reverent Silence
2 Tangle
1 Obliterate

If you can find alternatives to the rotasted out cards you should have something decent to tweak until you find something to work with.

fires is usually 3 color deck (R,G, and U or B).....
insteab of rotated blasto : ravenous baloth, loxodon hierarch (adding W), Kodama N, cytoplasm root kin, arashi, troll ascetic
B ussulaly used for smother and E plagues(sb) and spiritmonger(md) and/or deed
U : fire/ice, retraced image (quite usefull, dropping 2 baloth's on 4th turn)....
if u decide to go W : lightning helix,

other choices : starstorm, supply/demand, call of the herd, green leyline, tangle, bind, hull breach.

Uhm, ya, I'm pretty sure I had started a thread about my new version of Fires. (http://www.magic-league.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=280)
Anyway, I tried a white splash for Supply // Demand and got some not too shaby results. I even gave Heartbeat a try. Let's just say a Heartbeated and Doubling Seasoned Supply with Fires of Yavimaya in play hurts. Though I dropped the Seasons, the deck runs a little weird 'cause the mana curve goes through the roof at 3-4 converted mana cost. I include Rumbling Slum, Flametongue Kavu (obviously),Phantom Centaur and Ravenous Baloth (just personal favorites).
The hard part for this type of deck is that you want to inlcude a lot of fatties and forget about your 1-2 turn drops. Obviously Elves and BoP are in 4x each, but what else? Hearth Kami? Scorched Rusulka? I hate saccing my Kavu to a Rusulka.
Anyways, that's my opinions, glad to see Fire lovers still exist!!
Go go Fires!!

yeah..i forgot the rumbling slum....(ftk was an auto include...thread was for replacinf blasto)...Very Happy
genesis..is good...
anger is out of question (no way to discard it, and cast and sac is way undertempo)....
also i tried a version with kiki-jiki......more spiritmongers, baloths.....
heartbeat...take turn 2 fires spot..so it's not optimal......
also artifact mutation seem quite good.....many artifacts are played(and is better than natualize).....enchantress got rotated..and it won'm make a comeback......
anyway, flyers are a problemn (madness via wonder, ww wenie(flying), mr teeth, meloku, keiga)..so starsstorm and arashi are good choices......

hmmm i think we are onto something here.. I truely believe that burning-tree shaman is a auto include 4 copies of.. mainly based on the fact that it will basically shut down a tog deck or atleast slow it down for a while.. also part of what made fires so good was the fact that blastoderm couldn't be the target of spells or abilities.. so what new cards have come out that can fill that spot? giant solifuge maybe? but it has crap for defense and you wanna be able to use over again..and not see it go bye bye to a chump block..
slum is a good idea.. big fatty for cheap...but kill spells do suck..hmmmmm any other ideas? maybe petrified rootkin?(just and idea..so don't just flame it for no reason)

we have a lot of work todo so lets get started people!

Uhm...Did you read Giant Solifuge? It already has haste. If you want "untargetability", I suggest Nimble Mongoose, or it's brother, Blurred Mongoose.

i'm not to sure about the kird apes or the mongooses
part of t he fires deck power is the giving haste to cheap casting cost FATTIES and doing lots of dmg..as fast as possible.. any more ideas? something to replace the saporling burst
