Anyone catch the Legendary Simic Sky Swallower he mentioned there?
| Quote: | | *Extra*: Cytoshape does limit what choices you have, much like targeting. You couldn't target Simic Sky Swallower with Cytoshape because it can be targeted, and you can't choose the Swallower because it's Legendary. |
Not to derail the thread into "lol@JohnCarter", but I am surprised how many little mistakes creep through there, where many players trust its word above all. |

| So...the whole multiple activations of Genju of the Fields still works though, right? |

In a word: yes.
In a longer explanation, let me post the relevant text of the card:
| Quote: | | 2: Until end of turn, enchanted Plains becomes a 2/5 white Spirit creature with "Whenever this creature deals damage, you gain that much life." It's still a land. |
So what happens when you use this ability? The Plains in question becomes a creature with two features, a P/T of 2/5 and an instance of the Spirit Link ability. This means some interesting things with regards to the rules.
P/T Layering: Say you shrunk the Genju with a Last Gasp, making it (functionally) a 0/2. If you use the ability again, it will actually reset its P/T to 2/5. This is because the shrinking affect hits the P/T directly and the Genju's ability overwrites this directly.
This wouldn't apply to damage because that's kept track of separately by the rules; a 2/5 with 3 damage on it still has damage on it if you reset its P/T.
Ability Layering: All of the Genjus that add abilities gain redundant abilities when you activate them more than once; the Blue Genju gains flying again, the Black Genju gets two separate pump abilities and so on. The White Genju's ability is the only one where this redundancy matters, as each instance added will trigger whenever damage is dealt.
There's a trick to understand why it adds another instance. Think of it this way: Activate it once, and you get a 2/5 with spirit link. What happens when you activate it again? The 2/5 with spirit link becomes a 2/5 creature that gets spirit link and keeps all its existing abilities.
Put all this together, and you know how to deal with different varieties of Genju on the same land. Activate the Blue Genju, and the Hallowed Fountain becomes a 3/2 creature with flying. Activate the White Genju on the same land, and it becomes a 2/5 creature with flying and spirit link. Activate the Blue Genju again, and it becomes a 3/2 creature with flying, spirit link and flying.
The Genju's ability overwrites P/T and adds an instance of the ability, every time. John Carter has it correct this time fo sho. |
