Who remembers Fires of Yavimaya? Fires was probably my favorite card (and deck) around at the time of Invasion. I just loved how you could use Flametongue Kavu to clear a path and swing in on the same turn, or swing in and take another creature out. Ahhh, memories. I've given the deck a few tries before Guildpact came out but nothing conclusive came from my playtesting. I know I'm a little late on this one but whatever, now that Guildpact is legal, can Fires make a return?
I gave it a try. Obviously, it was 4x Stomping Grounds, 4x Fires of Yavimaya and 4x Flametongue Kavu. But where do we go from here? I thought of Rumbling Slum and Shivan Wurm next. People will most likely argue me about the Wurm but I've always liked it and it interacts very well with Kavu. Continuing down the 5 power for 4cc path, I came across an old buddy: Phantom Centaur. Ahhh, those were the days... At first I included Emperor Crocodile but found the curve couldn't really accept much more. I also considered Karstoderm but dropped it fairly quickly due to its shrinking size.
I'm sure you're all waiting for the list, so without further adieu, here we go, back down memory lane:
Fires
Lands
3 Mountain
7 Forest
2 Gruul Turf
4 Stomping Ground
4 Wooded Foothills
Creatures
3 Frostling
4 Flametongue Kavu
4 Birds of Paradise
4 Llanowar Elves
4 Kavu Titan
4 Sakura-Tribe Elder
3 Eternal Witness
2 Phantom Centaur
3 Burning-Tree Shaman
3 Rumbling Slum
2 Shivan Wurm
Others
4 Fires of Yavimaya
Sideboard
3 Tin Street Hooligan
2 Xantid Swarm
2 Blood Moon
4 Naturalize
2 Choke
2 Pithing Needle
People might criticize the Kavu Titan, but he holds a pivotal role. If I'm low on mana, he can always come out as a Grizzly Bears, and later on in the game, he can be a face smasher.
Help with the Sideboard would be appreciated. I'm still unsure about the Xantid Swarms. My question is: Xantid Swarm or Dosan, the Falling Leaf?
Any constructive criticism, tips or comments are welcome. Flaming will be ignored. |

In general, Xantid Swarm > Dosan.
But since you want hasty critters, you should already know the answer.. |

ravenous baloth...too good
go black...this opens for spiritmonger(md) / deed and smother in sb
run burn...firebolts/shocks over frostlings.
add keldon necropolis...good in late game agains many decks
starstorm agains tokens and gobbos(a have better creatures than him so u'll trafe starstors plus some creatures for their entire creature board)
run arashi in side - good agains flying weenies and meloku(never saw a meloku deck without counters)
turn 5 spiritmonge is far bettere than a wurm (run horned kavu instead)....
i splasherd blue for fire/ice and retraced image
paxcaster frogling is good...also that 4/4 for 4 in dis(with graft too)
i think i gave u enough choices..... |
