Hey, my freind and I always argue which is better, ophidian or theiving magpie. I say the ophidian because it doesnt require it to deal damage, just be unblocked, plus its not as mana intensive as the magpie. What do you all think?

Theiving Magppie

Creature — Bird
1/3
Flying (This creature can’t be blocked except by creatures with flying.)
Whenever Thieving Magpie deals damage to an opponent, you draw a card.

Ophidian

Creature — Snake
1/3
Whenever Ophidian attacks and isn’t blocked, you may draw a card. If you do, Ophidian deals no combat damage this turn.

Ophidian, by far. And the unblocked/damage thing has nothing to do with it, it's that it costs 1 less. That is all you need in t1.

Not like it really matters that much.

In T1 Ophidian is better because it's not likely that the damage or lack of flying is going to matter much.

If you compare them card-for-card, ignoring formats, I think I would go for the Magpie. Evasion kind of gives it the advantage in my opinion.
BTW: If the Magpie goes unblocked, it will probably do damage.

...except you're not ignoring formats. This is type 1. You don't need evasion.

But you shouldn't play BBS either way.

Stephen didn't name his deck One-Eyed Bird, and not only because that isn't funny, but also because magpie sucks horribly in Vintage. I think I would rather splash black and run Finkel than play Magpie. 4-mana is just too much. Ophie rarely gets blocked. In matchups where he does (Fish, aggro decks), Magpie would be too slow anyway.

You all forgot the most important reason. It costs only U. With decks with mana drains you look at the colored costs, not the whole cost. Ninja of the deep hours is better than magpie, and maybe even better than Ophidian in BBS. UU is just too much Smile
