I have to agree with not letting them in. I cant afford a big system either (I'm actually on a laptop) but I can afford to download a free backup like hamachi (I personally dont like MWS). I CAN host when I'm not wireless but I hardly ever am hardwired.
It's really irratating to build a sealed deck then have to go to flips first round and lose without playing a single game. For all I know my opponent could just have a shit deck and just rely on luck for the flip wins.
The point being is that the majority shouldn't be punished for the minority that is too lazy or stupid to get some form of a backup. Even 98'ers should get with the program and update to the 21st century. Either that or contend themselves with Pong. You CAN play that on a 98' right? |

For tourneys, especially, trials and masters, I wholeheartedly agree with the mindset that players who can't host and couldn't manage to get backups for a double no-host situation should lose in flips.
Trials and masters are both the most weighty/important tournaments, and it isn't fair to someone who has expended all the effort to get his system up to snuff to be able to 'host' to lose to someone [Okmar being such an example] who obviously doesn't care about making the matchup possible.
Also, by allowing flips to take place in such a situation, one could theoretically [and someone apparently has, see kendiggy's post] lie about not being able to host in attempts to win the flips. Seriously, people in the majority should triumph over the minority who a) didn't bother, b) can't get a 21st century computer, or c) are lying. It only makes sense.

Just fix your stuff so you can host games and you won't have this problem. If you can't host, you'll just have to deal with this. Just figure out how your router works. We have guides on our site and there's portforward.com
Good Luck
Reply to my email from koen looks like nothing we can do about these morons who think the game is amazing fun when your in the flips channel. |

I would like, for once, to see a thread about flips not immediately erupt in flames so that an honest discussion can take place.
For the record, I do not play in Apprentice tournaments so I have never dealt with flips. I have neither won nor lost on a flip, so I should have an objective view of the situation.
That said, I think the flip system is unnecessary coddling. The current thinking is "we cannot require people to have MWS or Hamachi in order to play in an Apprentice tournament."
Well, yes you can. It is as simple as this:
| Quote: | "Requirements to compete in an Apprentice tournament on Magic-League
You must meet one of the following conditions (in addition to running Apprentice with the latest patches):
A- Be able to host games on Apprentice
or
B- Have Hamachi
or
C- Have MWS
If you do not fulfill one of these conditions, you should not enter an Apprentice tournament. If during the tournament you are unable to connect to your opponent because you do not fulfill one of these conditions, you will automatically forfeit." |
That being said, I am not entirely sure how Hamachi works. If it requires both players to have Hamachi, then I would have no problem with flips being used to resolve games wherein one player has MWS and the other has Hamachi as both players have put an effort towards alleviating their difficulty in not being able to connect. |

Thats exactly my thoughts on the whole flips thing. |

Hamachi only runs on win2k and winxp
mws runs on windows systems only. Someone using linux (or mac system x or whatever) and automaton would be screwed then. We don't want that to happen.

| everyone agrees filps suck. you join appr trials and what not your going to eventually end up in flips if you cant host. by the logic of "if you cant host you cant play trials or master" then that would apply to you to. Appr touneys are for appr. not mws. some like me don;t like mws so we don;t use it. i won;t comment on hamichi b/c i've never had it. if you want to play mws just join those trials/masters simple as that then you won;t have to worry about it going to flips. thats my view have a nice day. |

| this is problematic for another reason. hamachi is very unstable, it works for me any other time, and lots of times its just dead. what will you do in this case? give a guy match-loss just cause hamachi crushed? |

Apprentice is also an 8 year old program. Hamachi is also not that great of a program. I know personally of at least 6 people whose computer it screwed up. While hamachi works for most connections and computers (the ones whose walled status can easily be fixed anyway), for more complex network environments, it leads to problems. Hamachi goes down all the time, and its still a BETA.
I love/hate how so many people complain about being walled yet so few take action to get themselves unwalled (mainly because they are not really walled, just routered). And it doesn't even take that long to turn on port forwarding on your router. If every takes a little time and visits www.portforward.com, it'll solve a lot of problems.
If you are "walled," unwall yourself and stop complaining. |

| I don't know if I;m the most qualified person to post here (as I'm on a Mac and do not play in... anything), but people are saying the don't have the money to move from 98 to a newer system? That sounds like a bad excuse considering the basic Dell costs like $500. |

Well, some people just can get around with the money they have, and can't save up a dime. $500 is not a lot when your income=spendings.

(and by spendings, I meant rent and water etc, not bar and drinks, even though those are important too) |

Most people here are children/teenagers and have no say if their parents buy a new computer. $500 is a lot for a 16 year old. |
