I do not know why they got rid of the 2nd bye for the winner of a trial and as an extension, the bye for the runner up. Because of this, it is way too important to be on a winning team or be a hi-ranked player. Only 13 byes get handed out for participating in a trial, yet 16 high ranked people get byes and max 15 people get byes for being on a top team (usually 12-13). Furthermore, many of the top players are the ones winning the trials anyways, making it difficult to obtain one of the 13 byes. It would be better if ML reverted to handing out 2 byes for winning a trial and a bye for the runner-up, or at least not allow a player already with a bye to 'bye-block' (bye will simply pass down to the runner up if the winner already has a bye).

It'd be too many byes since the masters have gotten smaller over they years.

This actually might be a good thing. We are granting byes to the top players the most, while giving "normal" players a few chances to pick up a bye at the master. This is similar to how most events with byes work in other forms of tournament games.
I think if we went back to giving 2 byes to first and 1 to second for each trial, we will need to allow the top players to be able to stack byes up to 2 as well. This means we will also need bigger master turnouts as we don't want people to go 2 byes, 2-0-2 into a top 8. It also makes it extremely difficult to make it to a top 8 if you have a loss if half the field has multiple byes in a 6 round event.
Just my thoughts.

Yeah, this is really just to stress what the other 2 guys already said. If more people show up for masters, we can give more byes. 2 byes in a 6 round master is unfair to everyone else.

Great. The gravy train vs prize bye ratio is even more skewed.
