Challenge: Create a non-green card that affects or is affected by your or your opponent's mana pool.

Entries will be judged A to F, based on the usual criteria:

1. Does this card follow the challenge?
2. Originality, Clarity and Wording.
3. Overall card flavor.
4. How balanced it is, good rarity.
5. Is it fun to play with?

If a card is easily broken, that will be held against it.

Charred Relic - 3
Artifact (Uncommon)
Whenever mana empties from an opponent's mana pool at the end of a step or phase, you may put that many charge counters on Charred Relic.
Remove a charge counter from Charred Relic: Charred Relic does 1 damage to target creature or player.
A long-forgotten tool of pain and suffering

Mage's Bane | 1R
Instant (Rare)

Quantum (This card may be played in response to players tapping lands or creatures for mana.) <This means that even though the act of tapping mana does not use the stack and therefore will go straight into the opp's pool, you can still inject priority in between your opponent tapping for mana and your opponent using that mana for a spell)

Deal X damage to target player where X is the amount of mana is his or her mana pool.

If B was spent to pay for Mage's Bane, remove all mana from target player's mana pool.

"And you thought they got rid of mana burn..."

Bringing back mana burn. Love it.

I find this to be a little over costed, as Dismember performs a similar function at instant speed, and this one is fairly conditional.

A solid card with a fun alternate casting cost when you need it for free.

The mechanic feels a little clunky, but the cost is just right. Russian special forces reference is a little weird, though.

Clean, straightforward, and poses an interesting dilemma for timing your removal. I like it.

In general, I'm not a big fan of lands that don't produce mana. The idea itself is interesting, though. I'm not sure I'd include the activated ability, as it seems like a very quick way to win.

Simplicity itself. I like the idea of building up reserves of mana for use whenever, mana which will stick around even if the artifact is destroyed.

Quantum creates way too many rules issues, issues I'm pretty sure are insurmountable within the current framework of the game. There's a reason mana abilities can't be responded to.

A very interesting card. Considering that it turns Healing Salve into a Dark Ritual in the bank, and Heroes' Reunion into God knows what, it would probably be an engine for something ridiculous, and that's not even factoring in multiples. Definitely undercosted.

Add the sacrificed creature's mana cost to that player's mana pool on his or her next main phase.

Does it target the creature? If it doesn't, you're advocating a removal spell that deals with every creature ever printed for a single white mana. The drawback is entirely conditional, and still more than overshadowed by unconditional destruction.

Cool for the same reasons CharlesT's removal spell was.

During the end step of each turn, you may pay X. If you do, tap X target lands and empty up to X mana from his or her controller's mana pool and lose 1 life for each mana emptied this way.

Pay for progress in blood, pay for evolution with aging.

This card seems strange to me. It's not like a Rishadan Port, where you're slowing your opponent down. It's more like you're trying to hose a control player by locking him out of your turn, City of Solitude style. The life seems like a steep price to pay to avoid tricks on your turn.

whenever a player adds a mana of any color to his or her mana pool during an opponents turn, that payer adds 1 instead.

whenever a player adds a colorless mana to his or her mana pool during his or her main phases, that player adds W instead.

"The first lesson of economics is scarcity: There is never enough of anything to satisfy all those who want it"

Another card designed to prevent tricks on your own turn, with an interesting corresponding ability. I got excited at the prospect of a turn 3 Serra Avatar using the Urzatron, before realizing that at WW, you have to run decent coloured sources to get this into play anyways.

Htanmo | 2
Legendary Creature - Scarecrow
As Htanmo enters the battlefield, choose a color.
Mana of the chosen color doesn't empty from your opponents' mana pools as steps and phases end.
Htanmo gets +1/+1 for each mana of the chosen color in your opponents' mana pools.
2/2

The Locus of Mana's evil brother. It seems like a pretty solid benefit to your opponent, as he can control exactly how big Htanmo gets and still pull all kinds of nasty tricks, like doubling his mana available by tapping out in your end step. With that much benefit going to your enemy, I'd like to see him be naturally quite a bit beefier, or have double strike or something.

The winner: pg8! One-sided mana burn was too fun to pass up.
Second place: Jacois.
Honourable mentions: CharlesT and ikazuchi.

I look forward to the next contest. Thank you all for your entries.
