Just had a look and it seems that MWS is not free? I am new to Magic Online, so is this the only option I can take? Thanks.

You can play on MWS without paying for it.

Yeah www.magicworkstation.com makes it seem like you need to pay but just download it and it works.

You mean works by only using the evaluation version? Where you can only play 30 cards?

It looks like you didnot download the mtg gamepack from magicworkstation.com. It sets your mws up for magic playing, but you will also need the latest cardsets. You can find those at www.slightlymagic.net
For the rest: the evaluation version, as it is called, is a fully functional program, including deckbuilder and online play module. It has some restrictions on the bells and whistles, like you are not able to use an avatar of choice, or playing tw different decks in soloplay mode etc, but for intents and purposes, mws is free to use.

Once you download magicworkstation you can go to this link ( http://www.slightlymagic.net/software/mws/5-mtg-masterbase ) and download the masterbase so you will have all the cards. It will give you directions on how to install it.

Once you have downloaded magicworkstation, and installed the masterbase. Then you just need to download mIRC and go to channel #magic-league to find league opponents, or you can just go in magicworkstation and use the "Game" menu at the top to click on "Connect to Opponent" and play casually.
