Scepter is very slow and not very good in a deck trying to be both aggressive and defensive since it contributes to neither.

Duress belongs to the SB because it is too narrow in use.

Rather, go with Dark Tutelage to feed you cards to support your resource-needing strategy, and another threat like Black Knight or Bloodghast to bring more board presence.

Scepter is a good turn two target for Lich. Tectonic Edge is retarded in a deck that curves out needing three black mana on turn three when I already annihilate Valakut. Dark Tutelage is like bad bob and I'm just not a fan... although it might make it in since all my ccs are so small. The point of the deck is that I don't need resources. The deck curves out at THREE. Lich, Shade, and Nyx are all the threats I need against MOST decks, as I can get their threats out of the way before they can stop mine. The deck has been doing alright in testing, no long sessions to quote or exact statistics yet. I've been spending too much time on a non-Lich mono-black hand destruction-style control deck. It's surprisingly good. Also, how is a 5cc 4/4 ever better than a 3cc reliably 4/4 growing to 6/6 or even 7/7 by turn 5, when Bloodwitch comes out?

Yes it curves out at 3cmc but Scepter still sits there unused since you'll use the mana playing discard and creatures, as well as pumping Shade. Or if you don't the deck applies no pressure since no threat is entering play until you got four or five mana.

It is a bad card and you can't have bad cards in any deck if you're going to improve it. The problem with Lich is that there aren't really that many useful 1/2 cmc artifacts in Standard right now, and you need many of them in order to ensure a turn 3 Lich. This means that Lich is probably not good enough to dedicate 10+ card slots in order to play it.

I would say that Adicious' deck is better. -1 Collar, -2 Machete for 3 Crystal Ball and you're set.

This is my take on a mono black deck for standard. Terramorphic Expanse is really just for a free shuffle effect.

// Lands
20 [M11] Swamp (2)
4 [M11] Terramorphic Expanse

// Creatures
4 [ZEN] Bloodghast
4 [ZEN] Gatekeeper of Malakir
4 [WWK] Kalastria Highborn
4 [ZEN] Vampire Hexmage
4 [M11] Phylactery Lich

// Spells
4 [ALA] Executioner's Capsule
4 [M11] Mind Rot
4 [M11] Dark Tutelage
2 [WWK] Basilisk Collar
2 [M11] Crystal Ball

// Sideboard
SB: 4 [M11] Duress
SB: 3 [M11] Doom Blade
SB: 3 [WWK] Urge to Feed
SB: 2 [ROE] Consuming Vapors
SB: 2 [ZEN] Eldrazi Monument
SB: 1 [M11] Sword of Vengeance

My threat hits play turn 3. How do you figure otherwise?

Is Lich really worth jumping through the hoops in a format with Oblivion Ring, Journey to Nowhere, and Path to Exile?

Not at all. First time my two Liches got pwned by O-Ring I dropped the deck permanently.
