Back with another 4-3-2-2 I won with what I would call an unusal UG deck, unusal for me anyway

Event #: 1470107
Time: 8/7/2010 12:24:37 AM
Players:
--> ElementalMox
ShadowForger
dinhot
OyvindN
Rous Ita
Thirsty_Savage_Blood
FTK75
crisisb3

------ M11 ------

Pack 1 pick 1:
Forest
Lightning Bolt
Bloodthrone Vampire
War Priest of Thune
Bloodcrazed Goblin
Duskdale Wurm
Dryad's Favor
Solemn Offering
Nether Horror
Terramorphic Expanse
Pacifism
--> Sword of Vengeance
Dragon's Claw
Mighty Leap
Maritime Guard

This is an intresting pack, two solid removal spells lightning bolt and pacifism, of which I prefer bolt, as I think red is a bet colour in this format, also back to nature makes decks with multiple pacifisms much worse but a sword of vengance I am unsure how good is feels a little clunky but also looks supiciously bomb like so I decided to give it a try.

Pack 1 pick 2:
Wall of Vines
Rotting Legion
Excommunicate
--> Terramorphic Expanse
Volcanic Strength
Island
Haunting Echoes
Ornithopter
Merfolk Spy
Prized Unicorn
Augury Owl
Sylvan Ranger
Demolish
Unsummon

This is a fairly average pack, none of the cards in the pack really pull me strongly in any direction, rotting legion and sylvan ranger are prob the best two spells, however I do not feel they are good enough a spells to pick over a terramorphic expanse when we dso not already have a direction im not going to miss not playing either of them.

Pack 1 pick 3:
Berserkers of Blood Ridge
Goblin Balloon Brigade
Tireless Missionaries
--> Greater Basilisk
Child of Night
Naturalize
Celestial Purge
Mana Leak
Island
Blood Tithe
Harbor Serpent
Inspired Charge
Wurm's Tooth

Here the basilisk and mana leak are both solid picks, Im a little unsure just how high a pick mana leak is, so I am going to take the basillisk as more of a signal being more definate o just how good it is.

Pack 1 pick 4:
Giant Spider
Fog
Armored Cancrix
Swamp
Silvercoat Lion
Lava Axe
Call to Mind
Goblin Piker
Goldenglow Moth
Ice Cage
Demolish
--> Garruk's Packleader

This pack pretty much confirms green is open both the best tow cards arte green garruks packleader one of the main reasons to go into green and giant spider, the packleader is my pick as it is super powerfull unanswered

Pack 1 pick 5:
Swamp
Barony Vampire
Disentomb
Kraken's Eye
Elite Vanguard
Fog
--> Azure Drake
Pyretic Ritual
Thunder Strike
Inspired Charge
Cloud Crusader

Generally im not a fan of pairing green with blue but this format, has alot of bounce plus mind controls which make it okay, plus green in a reasonable colour to splash in.

Pack 1 pick 6:
Fiery Hellhound
Rotting Legion
--> Ęther Adept
Forest
Silvercoat Lion
Nature's Spiral
Gravedigger
Yavimaya Wurm
Negate
Phantom Beast

I think the adept is the best card here certainly in green blue, alot opf options though yavimaya wurm though we should be able to easily pick up those later, natures spiral, negate all reasonable.

Pack 1 pick 7:
Mountain
Jace's Erasure
Holy Strength
Tireless Missionaries
Duress
Barony Vampire
Manic Vandal
--> Sacred Wolf
Voltaic Key

Not normally a card I am overexcited about but, 5/1 vigilance first strike, trample, shroud is pretty good I hear and oh yeah i did do it.

Pack 1 pick 8:
Goblin Tunneler
Jace's Erasure
--> Plummet
Relentless Rats
Plains
Bloodthrone Vampire
Tireless Missionaries
Child of Night

Solid playable in green blue.

Pack 1 pick 9:
Forest
--> Bloodthrone Vampire
Bloodcrazed Goblin
Dryad's Favor
Solemn Offering
Nether Horror
Dragon's Claw

Pack 1 pick 10:
Wall of Vines
--> Rotting Legion
Island
Ornithopter
Merfolk Spy
Demolish

Pack 1 pick 11:
Goblin Balloon Brigade
Tireless Missionaries
Island
--> Inspired Charge
Wurm's Tooth

Pack 1 pick 12:
Swamp
--> Lava Axe
Goldenglow Moth
Demolish

Pack 1 pick 13:
Swamp
Kraken's Eye
--> Inspired Charge

Pack 1 pick 14:
--> Rotting Legion
Forest

Pack 1 pick 15:
--> Mountain

------ M11 ------

Pack 2 pick 1:
Nightwing Shade
Wall of Vines
Llanowar Elves
Infantry Veteran
Runeclaw Bear
Fling
Deathmark
Cloud Crusader
Ajani's Pridemate
Thunder Strike
Mana Leak
Viscera Seer
Leyline of Sanctity
--> Juggernaut
Island

Here we have a few options llanowar elves, mana leak and juggernaught, overall the big fat felt the most powerfull

Pack 2 pick 2:
Juggernaut
Island
Bloodthrone Vampire
Dryad's Favor
Solemn Offering
Safe Passage
Bloodcrazed Goblin
Terramorphic Expanse
Ajani's Pridemate
Maritime Guard
Preordain (FOIL)
Giant Growth
Deathmark
--> Overwhelming Stampede

This card one me almost every game in some what emphatic fashion, there can be no other pick.

Pack 2 pick 3:
Forest
Liliana's Specter
Vulshok Berserker
--> Jace's Ingenuity
Acidic Slime
Flashfreeze
Garruk's Companion
Negate
Cloud Elemental
Manic Vandal
Giant Spider
Chandra's Outrage
Phantom Beast

This is a strong pack hopefully we should wheel something nice, spider, elemental, companion are all solid, however ingenuity is just a notch above the rest

Pack 2 pick 4:
Siege Mastodon
Blood Tithe
Black Knight
Squadron Hawk
Palace Guard
Hunters' Feast
Nightwing Shade
Maritime Guard
Pyroclasm
Island
Dragon's Claw
--> Foresee

Very easy pick forsee is great card draw should have no problem finding my stampede which should just win vs most decks

Pack 2 pick 5:
Goblin Piker (FOIL)
Fling
Mountain
Kraken's Eye
Pyretic Ritual
Silvercoat Lion
Bog Raiders
Hornet Sting
Corrupt
Chandra's Spitfire
--> Unsummon

5th pick unsummon is not good times but okay

Pack 2 pick 6:
Rotting Legion
Barony Vampire
Manic Vandal
Mountain
Call to Mind
Child of Night (FOIL)
Corrupt
Stormfront Pegasus
Sacred Wolf
--> Foresee

Can not get enough card draw no sir

Pack 2 pick 7:
Liliana's Specter
Tireless Missionaries
Volcanic Strength
Island
--> Naturalize
Diabolic Tutor
Goblin Balloon Brigade
Silence
Jace's Erasure

Okay board card

Pack 2 pick 8:
Goldenglow Moth
Disentomb
Plains
Canyon Minotaur
Autumn's Veil
--> Foresee
Siege Mastodon
Nightwing Shade

Wow i did not forsee getting so mcuh card draw this pack, I proably have more than enough now and need to start filling my curve out with creatures to make my stampede and sword good.

Pack 2 pick 9:
Nightwing Shade
--> Wall of Vines
Fling
Deathmark
Thunder Strike
Viscera Seer
Island

Pack 2 pick 10:
Island
Bloodthrone Vampire
Dryad's Favor
Solemn Offering
Bloodcrazed Goblin
--> Deathmark

Pack 2 pick 11:
Forest
Flashfreeze
Negate
Manic Vandal
--> Phantom Beast

Pack 2 pick 12:
Blood Tithe
Hunters' Feast
Island
--> Dragon's Claw

Pack 2 pick 13:
Mountain
Kraken's Eye
--> Pyretic Ritual

Pack 2 pick 14:
Mountain
--> Call to Mind

Pack 2 pick 15:
--> Island

------ M11 ------

Pack 3 pick 1:
--> Llanowar Elves
Azure Drake
Liliana's Specter
Blinding Mage
Assault Griffin
Magma Phoenix
Scroll Thief
Augury Owl
Barony Vampire
Swamp
Cultivate
Diabolic Tutor
Assassinate
Deathmark
Roc Egg

Curve issues make llanowar elves better than azure drake for me in this pack, much the same with cultivate plus it is also a creature

Pack 3 pick 2:
Hornet Sting
Stabbing Pain
Black Knight
Silvercoat Lion
Chandra's Outrage
Viscera Seer
Island
Dragon's Claw
Pyroclasm
Ajani's Mantra
--> Ęther Adept
Armored Cancrix
Volcanic Strength
Pyretic Ritual

Best con colour option

Pack 3 pick 3:
Palace Guard
Hunters' Feast
Rotting Legion
Crystal Ball
--> Cudgel Troll
Incite
Forest
Maritime Guard
Brindle Boar
Chandra's Spitfire
Blood Tithe
Giant Spider
Giant Growth

Cudgel Troll is a semi bomb and just a no brianer in a pack full of good cards for us

Pack 3 pick 4:
Siege Mastodon
Nightwing Shade
Primal Cocoon
Bloodthrone Vampire
Traumatize
Holy Strength
Terramorphic Expanse
Forest
--> Acidic Slime
Tome Scour
Harbor Serpent
Flashfreeze

Although i would have prefered, something with a lower curve than slime it solves all sorts of probelms for the deck so is a welcome addition

Pack 3 pick 5:
Prized Unicorn
Harbor Serpent
Blood Tithe
--> Runeclaw Bear
Naturalize
Forest
Foresee
Solemn Offering
Goblin Balloon Brigade
Hunters' Feast
Earth Servant

Its not garruks companion but its a guy and i need something at the bottom end of my curve

Pack 3 pick 6:
Goblin Piker
Goldenglow Moth
--> Wall of Vines
Infantry Veteran
Ajani's Pridemate
Mountain
Demon's Horn
Mighty Leap
Viscera Seer
Lava Axe

Reasonable early dude also

Pack 3 pick 7:
Nightwing Shade
Wall of Vines
Swamp
Runeclaw Bear
Ajani's Mantra
Alluring Siren
Armored Cancrix
--> Awakener Druid
Combust

This is two guys a pick im very happy about

Pack 3 pick 8:
Plains
Fiery Hellhound
Bloodthrone Vampire
Mind Rot
Tireless Missionaries
Angel's Feather
Tome Scour
--> Naturalize

Pack 3 pick 9:
Azure Drake
Liliana's Specter
--> Scroll Thief
Barony Vampire
Swamp
Diabolic Tutor
Deathmark

Wow the azure drake wheeled but sadly i can not take it, my deck is chock full at 4 and 5 and a little light on early spells, so having something to do early ie scroll thief is more important

Pack 3 pick 10:
--> Silvercoat Lion
Viscera Seer
Island
Dragon's Claw
Ajani's Mantra
Pyretic Ritual

Pack 3 pick 11:
Hunters' Feast
--> Rotting Legion
Incite
Forest
Blood Tithe

Pack 3 pick 12:
Holy Strength
Forest
Tome Scour
--> Harbor Serpent

Pack 3 pick 13:
Forest
--> Goblin Balloon Brigade
Hunters' Feast

Pack 3 pick 14:
Mountain
--> Demon's Horn

Pack 3 pick 15:
--> Armored Cancrix

I still would've taken the Azure Drake over the Scroll Thief... Sure, Scroll Thief is something to do, but not exactly something I'd want to do. Razz

Yeah it was purely a curve pick, im not really trying to advocate as a good card, though it was quite good in one game well llanowars scroll thief, juggernaught, awakner druid is just a really sick draw no matter how you look at it.

It is fine to take a card that is slightly worse if it fits your curve better. In the case of scroll thief vs. azure drake, however, the card that fits your curve is nowhere close to the card that doesn't. Azure drake was definitely the pick there. Also, you said in p1p2 that rotting legion and ranger were the best cards in the pack, but prized unicorn is better than both of them, and exco is better than rotting legion. Hell, augury owl is better than rotting legion. Rotting legion is not a good card at all. It is a servicable 22nd playable kind of card.

In no universe that ive ever visited is prized unicorn better than sylvan ranger. I'd say never picking it over ranger is the play pack 1.

Sylvan ranger is really, really overrated. A 1/1 is not a full card, so you aren't actually getting card advantage. It is a good card, but it is not borderland ranger, and people acting as though it is. Prized unicorn, on the other hand, can instantly turn a stalled board into a winning one. When you take it early, you can also put giant growth a little higher in your pick orders, knowing that casting a giant growth on a prized unicorn is a house of a play. It is close, but unicorn over ranger is fine. If you want to take ranger over unicorn then sure, that's fine too. Terramorphic expanse over either is silly, and rotting legion over unicorn is vomit-inducingly bad.

Man, no1 in a good table sees an azure drake at pick 9. if u want to get better at this game, i suggest that u start to draft at 8-4 tables.

Think he's more concerned with getting the color comps down and building up some packs for the moment.
