Back with another 8-4 I won.

Event #: 1386692
Time: 7/4/2010 6:31:34 PM
Players:
danimoth25
Paanika
rlump27
--> ElementalMox
Kalimno
DrifterMiles
D_Fornax
PascalMaynard

------ ROE ------

Pack 1 pick 1:
Keening Stone
Guard Duty
Curse of Wizardry
Aura Gnarlid
Mnemonic Wall
Deprive
Zof Shade
Might of the Masses
Soulsurge Elemental
Lavafume Invoker
--> Drake Umbra
Goblin Arsonist
Glory Seeker
Daggerback Basilisk
Forest

The stongest cards in the pack are drake umbra, mnemoic wall and keening stone, the stone is only good in the slow removal heavy control decks, memnomic wall is also at its best in the same archtype though more versatile than the stone, However Drake Umbra is the most powerful of all the umbras and is often enough on its own to win the game and so is my pick.

Pack 1 pick 2:
Hedron-Field Purists
Brimstone Mage
Guard Duty
Emrakul's Hatcher
Cadaver Imp
Prey's Vengeance
Skywatcher Adept
--> Narcolepsy
Hand of Emrakul
Null Champion
Reinforced Bulwark
Daggerback Basilisk
Ondu Giant
Forest

Hedron Field Purist and brimstone mage are both quite powerfull cards but incrdibly mana intensive whilst narcolepsy in premimum removal and a notch above the other cards.

Pack 1 pick 3:
Demonic Appetite
Inquisition of Kozilek
Time of Heroes
Jwari Scuttler
Nighthaze
Living Destiny
Stalwart Shield-Bearers
Wrap in Flames
Contaminated Ground
Ulamog's Crusher
Shared Discovery
--> Gigantomancer
Swamp

Here the choice is between ulamogs crusher and gigantomancer, a 3rd pick gigantomancer is a reasonable signal that green is open, however the unattractiveness of green blue as an archtype should play a factor, The gigantomancer although having a frailer body has a more powerfull effect, ultimately i took the gigantomancer knowing by the time I reach 8 mana it should be easily playable as a splash, if i could make the pick again i would take the crusher here, I feel it is the correct pick.

Pack 1 pick 4:
Inquisition of Kozilek (FOIL)
Guard Duty
Dreamstone Hedron
Cadaver Imp
Induce Despair
Battle-Rattle Shaman
Surreal Memoir
--> Narcolepsy
Brood Birthing
Null Champion
Repel the Darkness
Mountain

Narcolspsy is an easy pick here with what we have already being the strongest card in the pack anyway, with out it I would take the induce despair.

Pack 1 pick 5:
Kabira Vindicator
Champion's Drake
Gloomhunter
Luminous Wake
Haze Frog
Aura Finesse
Goblin Arsonist
Knight of Cliffhaven
--> Prophetic Prism
Baneful Omen
Swamp

Two soild picks for the uw evasive levelers archtype, however i pretty much do not go white and we all know how much i love prophetic prism by now so it was my pick.

Pack 1 pick 6:
Stalwart Shield-Bearers
Survival Cache
Shrivel
--> Might of the Masses
Ogre Sentry
Glory Seeker
Harmless Assault
Affa Guard Hound
Fleeting Distraction
Swamp

Disappointing pack, no real blue option a bunch of average white cards

Pack 1 pick 7:
--> Valakut Fireboar
Death Cultist
Jaddi Lifestrider
Lay Bare
Shrivel
Raid Bombardment
Suffer the Past
Demystify
Plains

Here the boar is more tempting than the lifestrider mostly due to the fact we have a drake umbra and these boars like drake umbras more than almost any creature.

Pack 1 pick 8:
Luminous Wake
Perish the Thought
Spider Umbra
--> Shared Discovery
Harmless Assault
Bloodthrone Vampire
Demystify
Island

Pack 1 pick 9:
Curse of Wizardry
--> Mnemonic Wall
Deprive
Zof Shade
Goblin Arsonist
Glory Seeker
Forest

Okay the memnoic wall should not have wheeled out of this pack, it was one of the strongest cards in the pack the fact it has, is excellent news for us.

Pack 1 pick 10:
Cadaver Imp
Prey's Vengeance
Hand of Emrakul
Reinforced Bulwark
--> Daggerback Basilisk
Forest

Pack 1 pick 11:
Demonic Appetite
--> Jwari Scuttler
Living Destiny
Stalwart Shield-Bearers
Swamp

Pack 1 pick 12:
Inquisition of Kozilek (FOIL)
--> Surreal Memoir
Brood Birthing
Mountain

Pack 1 pick 13:
--> Aura Finesse
Goblin Arsonist
Swamp

Pack 1 pick 14:
--> Harmless Assault
Swamp

Pack 1 pick 15:
--> Plains

------ ROE ------

Pack 2 pick 1:
Lone Missionary
Bramblesnap
Jwari Scuttler
Nighthaze
Stalwart Shield-Bearers
Kor Line-Slinger
Battle Rampart
--> Pelakka Wurm
Nema Siltlurker
Spider Umbra
Eland Umbra
Runed Servitor
Nomads' Assembly
Fleeting Distraction
Island

This pack is pretty bare but a pekkula wurm which, is fine even if the wurm is in a colour we are not particular deep in, as its such a bomb.

Pack 2 pick 2:
Spawning Breath
Angelheart Vial (FOIL)
Soul's Attendant
Sporecap Spider
See Beyond
Hand of Emrakul
Oust
Eland Umbra
Escaped Null
Fissure Vent
Ikiral Outrider
--> Rapacious One
Hellion Eruption
Forest

Hellion eruption is unlikley to be impressive with what we have already, angel heart vial is prob an option here but i went for the rapcious ogre as a powerfull winner

Pack 2 pick 3:
Goblin Tunneler
Gloomhunter
--> Evolving Wilds
Mnemonic Wall
Lust for War
Dread Drone
Caravan Escort
Snake Umbra
Skittering Invasion
Echo Mage
Distortion Strike
Traitorous Instinct
Mountain

A series of solid options here, in memnoic wall, echo mage, lust for war and evolving wilds, my policy on fixing is if your planning to splash take it early and I am planning to splash.

Pack 2 pick 4:
Goblin Tunneler
Spawning Breath
--> Frostwind Invoker
Vent Sentinel
Grotag Siege-Runner
Pennon Blade
Stomper Cub
Renegade Doppelganger
Reality Spasm
Distortion Strike
Virulent Swipe
Mountain

Fairly average pack the invoker is a solid pick though.

Pack 2 pick 5:
Spawning Breath
Sporecap Spider
Dread Drone
Kor Line-Slinger
Stomper Cub
See Beyond
--> Heat Ray
Goblin Arsonist
Phantasmal Abomination
Ikiral Outrider
Plains

Late heat ray is an easy pick, red is now looking more like our second colour with no good green cards showing up

Pack 2 pick 6:
Death Cultist
Demonic Appetite (FOIL)
Ancient Stirrings
Makindi Griffin
Shrivel
--> Wrap in Flames
Brood Birthing
Runed Servitor
Leaf Arrow
Island

Pack 2 pick 7:
Wildheart Invoker
Irresistible Prey
Mnemonic Wall
Cadaver Imp
Caravan Escort
Snake Umbra
Lavafume Invoker
--> Sea Gate Oracle
Forest

This was a tough pack, the wildheart invoker was prob the strongest card in the pack but the double green rules out, memnoic wall is almost certainly next behind, as slow as this format is however you still need to pay some sort of attention to curve and currently i have nothing to do before turn 3, unless you count narcolespy or heat ray, which more often than not i am not going to want to use that early, so for this reason i took the oracle.

Pack 2 pick 8:
Demonic Appetite
Ancient Stirrings
--> Champion's Drake
Crab Umbra
Battle Rampart
Merfolk Observer
Not of This World
Swamp

Pack 2 pick 9:
Jwari Scuttler
Nighthaze
Stalwart Shield-Bearers
--> Nema Siltlurker
Eland Umbra
Fleeting Distraction
Island

Pack 2 pick 10:
--> Soul's Attendant
Hand of Emrakul
Eland Umbra
Fissure Vent
Ikiral Outrider
Forest

Pack 2 pick 11:
Gloomhunter
Caravan Escort
Skittering Invasion
--> Distortion Strike
Mountain

We are now ur with a boar you never know

Pack 2 pick 12:
Goblin Tunneler
Grotag Siege-Runner
--> Distortion Strike
Mountain

Pack 2 pick 13:
Phantasmal Abomination
--> Ikiral Outrider
Plains

Pack 2 pick 14:
--> Demonic Appetite (FOIL)
Island

Pack 2 pick 15:
--> Forest

------ ROE ------

Pack 3 pick 1:
Ancient Stirrings
Lay Bare
Aura Gnarlid
Akoum Boulderfoot
Battle-Rattle Shaman
Last Kiss
Prey's Vengeance
--> Staggershock
Smite
Hand of Emrakul
Corpsehatch
Null Champion
Repay in Kind
Hyena Umbra
Island

Stagger shock is a good first pick with the cards we have and certainly by someway the strongest on colour option, with out it we may well be taking a battlerattle shaman or aura gnarlid.

Pack 3 pick 2:
Death Cultist
Wildheart Invoker
Lone Missionary
Venerated Teacher
Rage Nimbus
Ogre Sentry
Brood Birthing
Broodwarden
--> Flame Slash
Warmonger's Chariot
Essence Feed
Halimar Wavewatch
Knight of Cliffhaven
Plains

This is a great second pick premium red removal always a welcome addition with out the flameslash the wavewatcher would be a very welcome additio to my stack.

Pack 3 pick 3:
Joraga Treespeaker
Nighthaze
Living Destiny
Eel Umbra
Momentous Fall
Stomper Cub (FOIL)
--> Staggershock
Regress
Zulaport Enforcer
Skittering Invasion
Reinforced Bulwark
Goblin Arsonist
Island

Strong green in this pack but if we are playing green at all we are splashing it, making the staggershock an excellent 3rd pick.

Pack 3 pick 4:
Kabira Vindicator
Angelheart Vial
Ancient Stirrings
Naturalize
Deprive
Smite
Drake Umbra
--> Kiln Fiend
Repel the Darkness
Merfolk Observer
Affa Guard Hound
Island

Here the drake umbra is the strongest card in the pack, however we have a real problem with taking it as, we have around 7 creatures atm one of which is a wall, so with lots of efficent removal plus distortion strikes, kiln fiend is our pick.

Pack 3 pick 5:
Lone Missionary
Unified Will
Soul's Attendant
Nema Siltlurker
Perish the Thought
Spider Umbra
--> Lagac Lizard
Merfolk Observer
Not of This World
Demystify
Plains

We may well have to play beaters like this, just to give us some threats its okay though with the removal suite we have

Pack 3 pick 6:
--> Valakut Fireboar
Jwari Scuttler
Eel Umbra
Ogre's Cleaver
Stalwart Shield-Bearers
Wrap in Flames
Puncturing Light
Haze Frog
Shared Discovery
Forest

Another welcome addition to the ur distortion archtype.

Pack 3 pick 7:
Irresistible Prey
--> Gravitational Shift
Jwari Scuttler
Explosive Revelation
Wrap in Flames
Eland Umbra
Harmless Assault
Leaf Arrow
Island

Mostly for the board and the fact its devestating vs us as well

Pack 3 pick 8:
Eel Umbra
Grotag Siege-Runner
--> Surreal Memoir
Aura Finesse
Soulbound Guardians
Reinforced Bulwark
Lagac Lizard
Swamp

Can not take a lagac lizard over memoir as much as the deck prob wants the lizard more

Pack 3 pick 9:
Ancient Stirrings
Lay Bare
--> Akoum Boulderfoot
Prey's Vengeance
Hand of Emrakul
Repay in Kind
Island

Its not the ideal big guy but it will do the job.

Pack 3 pick 10:
Death Cultist
--> Lone Missionary
Ogre Sentry
Warmonger's Chariot
Essence Feed
Plains

Pack 3 pick 11:
Living Destiny
--> Eel Umbra
Reinforced Bulwark
Goblin Arsonist
Island

Pack 3 pick 12:
Ancient Stirrings
--> Repel the Darkness
Merfolk Observer
Island

Pack 3 pick 13:
Merfolk Observer
--> Not of This World
Plains

Pack 3 pick 14:
--> Haze Frog
Forest

Pack 3 pick 15:
--> Island

The deck

1 distortion strike
1 flame slash
1 prophetic prism
2 narcolespsy
1 kiln fiend
2 staggershock
1 jwari scuttler
1 sea gate oracle
1 surreal memoir
1 wrap in flames
1 lagac lizard
1 drake umbra
1 frostwind invoker
1 memonic wall
2 valakult fireboar
1 akoum boulderfoot
1 rapacious ogre
1 gigantomacer
1 heat ray
7 island
1 forest
1 evolving wilds
9 mountain

Feedback appreciated.

Lots of late goodies in this one. I would probably be greedy enough to pick up the second drake umbra, even though it might not be correct.

just want to comment on how well drafted this draft is from my perspective, lots of easy traps to avoid falling into, and logic is pretty much spot on (I know that sounds condescending, but people rarely ever say well done, just what they disagree with, so I felt the need to point it out). I may disagree with you about priorities (how highly to pick fixing and sb cards), but I don't disagree with logic.

p1p3
I know you hate white, but time of heroes really is a great pick here. Gigantomancer is solid too of course, although I agree with you that crusher is the better pick. Ironically, I find 7/7s without evasion just too... small in this format

p1p6
Might of the masses is never going to be good in GU, and you are definately blue. I would take survival cache and go defensive WU. No love/mention of shrivel?

p1p9
Agree, criminally late

p1p10
Did you consider imp? Or so keen to go green?

p2p3
I'm a very big fan of lust for war, even in defensive decks. Echo mage is also very very good with your memoir/wall possible deck. Is fixing really worth prioritizing THIS early?

p2p7
80%+ of drafters make the wrong pick here probably. Oracle is definitely the pick.

p2p8
Observor not even worth considering, even as a sb card to give you the option to go aggro post sb?

p3p10
Ogre sentry surely as sb vs fast decks

p3p12
See p2p8

p3p13
See p2p8

Thanks dv8r I don't find it condenscending at all.

In my opinion if you are going to be critical when people make poor decisions you should be vigilant to also make sure your complimentrary when they make good ones or in alot of circumstances you are not being fair. Though here, thats not really the case, this much more aplies to work enviroments.

Thanks anyhow, positive feedback is always really nice, even if its often not as useful as the negative stuff, it certainly leaves me in better mood than some of the less pleasant comments do.

p1p3 I know the chances of me going uw levelers is below 1% it would just be a wasted pick. Should have been crusher.

p1p6 I actually quite like might of the masses in token decks, taking an off colour card just to be run in the sideboard if i do go that colour does not seem a good choice over a reasonable playable. White is much the same logic as stated prior.

p1p10 Imp was not considered, I did not get the feel that black was open, I saw relatively little all pack one, though the same could be said of red, which is another good reason to take fixing early.

p2p3 I am aware I undervalue lust for war, however taking fixing early is a stratergy that has paid dividends for me, even if in this particular draft that would not be the case. Overall the stratergy has been effective. Even though I do not like wilds anywhere near as much as prism, here i took it, if I had took the ulamogs crusher over the gigantomancer i would be able to take, the wall or lust for war, prob the wall.

p2p8 I have never played mefolk observe in this format, I hope I am never in a situation where i have to.

p3p10 I felt it was most likely the person next to me was in white unless he has the same aversion i do to the colour. I did not feel the ogre was needed as there are so few truely aggresive decks in this format and between double staggershock and narcoepsy i should be able to cope.
