Back with another 8-4 i won, grixis never fails in this format.

Event #: 1379782
Time: 7/2/2010 1:55:41 PM
Players:
--> ElementalMox
Pikachu4Ever
mtgpollo
dakakri
Harpas28
lol_jobs
riverat
Carnifexxx

------ ROE ------

Pack 1 pick 1:
Spawning Breath
Ancient Stirrings
Jaddi Lifestrider
Momentous Fall
Cadaver Imp
Stomper Cub
Staggershock
Smite
Soulbound Guardians
Hand of Emrakul
--> Vendetta
Ondu Giant
Ikiral Outrider
Not of This World
Plains

3 cards worth discussing in this pack, vendetta my pick, staggershock and momentus fall, the fall is the most situational and also the bigest colour commitment so that is an esay rule out, staggershock is both more mana intesnsive and able to kill alot less creatures than vendetta, making vendetta my pick.

Pack 1 pick 2:
Skeletal Wurm
--> Joraga Treespeaker
Frostwind Invoker
Vent Sentinel
Living Destiny
Stomper Cub
See Beyond
Regress
Glory Seeker
Emerge Unscathed
Totem-Guide Hartebeest
Kozilek's Predator
Bloodthrone Vampire
Swamp

The rare is missing from the pack and in all honesty i can not really think of any green rares bar vengevine that would be took over jorga treespeaker so there is a pretty good chance our opponent did not take a green card out of this pack which is great news as treespeaker is comfortably the best card in this pack.

Pack 1 pick 3:
Demonic Appetite
Akoum Boulderfoot
Makindi Griffin (FOIL)
Deprive
Stalwart Shield-Bearers
Sporecap Spider
Battle Rampart
Raid Bombardment
Ogre Sentry
Skittering Invasion
--> Oust
Fleeting Distraction
Forest

Very disappointing pack, the oust i think is a little stronger thab giffin though really i took this card hoping to not have to play it.

Pack 1 pick 4:
Kabira Vindicator
Mnemonic Wall
Pennon Blade
--> Dread Drone
Caravan Escort
Puncturing Light
Snake Umbra
Guard Gomazoa
Zulaport Enforcer
Lavafume Invoker
Baneful Omen
Island

Here we were faced with a choice of taking the vindicator and moving into white not something im a fan of, or taking the dreadzone and hoping black is open, I guess menomic wall could be an option as well but i opted with the dreadzone

Pack 1 pick 5:
Gloomhunter
Mnemonic Wall (FOIL)
Grotag Siege-Runner
Prey's Vengeance
Haze Frog
Raid Bombardment
Soulsurge Elemental
Ogre Sentry
--> Prophetic Prism
Fleeting Distraction
Swamp

Here Im really not entirely sure what direction the draft is taking, with little sign of any green and no black option prism felt like the safest pick.

Pack 1 pick 6:
Naturalize
Champion's Drake
Soul's Attendant
Deprive
Surreal Memoir
Soulsurge Elemental (FOIL)
Repel the Darkness
Bala Ged Scorpion
--> Prophetic Prism
Mountain

Here the most powerfull card is prob a memoir but sadly we only have a vendetta so far, soul surge elemntal could also be an option but here i like taking the second prism, as if we can pick up another after that which we more than likely can, splashing becomes something we can even do with out any actual mana sources of the colour.

Pack 1 pick 7:
Angelheart Vial
Guard Duty
--> Mnemonic Wall
Makindi Griffin
Zof Shade
Daggerback Basilisk
Essence Feed
Affa Guard Hound
Plains

Now with the double prism here it is much easier to take the wall, the back to back prisms allow for me to change colours with much more confidence.

Pack 1 pick 8:
Goblin Tunneler
Luminous Wake
Battle Rampart
Haze Frog
--> Pathrazer of Ulamog
Distortion Strike
Merfolk Observer
Mountain

Over costed win condition seems better than any of the other options

Pack 1 pick 9:
Ancient Stirrings
Jaddi Lifestrider
--> Cadaver Imp
Soulbound Guardians
Ikiral Outrider
Not of This World
Plains

Promising sign that black is open which is good as it sthe only colour we are close to locked into

Pack 1 pick 10:
Skeletal Wurm
--> Frostwind Invoker
Vent Sentinel
See Beyond
Glory Seeker
Swamp

The invoker is a solid late pick

Pack 1 pick 11:
Demonic Appetite
Stalwart Shield-Bearers
--> Battle Rampart
Fleeting Distraction
Forest

Pack 1 pick 12:
Zulaport Enforcer
--> Lavafume Invoker
Baneful Omen
Island

Pack 1 pick 13:
--> Gloomhunter
Grotag Siege-Runner
Swamp

Pack 1 pick 14:
--> Deprive
Mountain

Pack 1 pick 15:
--> Zof Shade

------ ROE ------

Pack 2 pick 1:
Valakut Fireboar
Death Cultist
Artisan of Kozilek
Ancient Stirrings
Guard Duty (FOIL)
--> Gelatinous Genesis
Shrivel
Staggershock
Raid Bombardment
Smite
Null Champion
Kiln Fiend
Hada Spy Patrol
Demystify
Swamp

Very powefull pack once again with 3 good picks geleationous genesis my pick, the staggershock which although powerfull still suffers from much the same problem as last kiss, with the bonus it is a 2 for 1 in some situtaions and the artisan which is alos superpowerfull, however the genesis, is an out and out bomb in the late game and brutal with memnomic wall, so although green seems almost certainly not open, as i already have 2 prisms taking the genesis is not much of an issue.

Pack 2 pick 2:
Wildheart Invoker
Champion's Drake
Jwari Scuttler
Boar Umbra
Bloodrite Invoker
Wrap in Flames
Smite
--> Flame Slash
Hada Spy Patrol
Runed Servitor
Harmless Assault
Prophetic Prism
Leaf Arrow
Island

Here the flame slash, although i have no red, is also similary an easy pick with the 2 prisms already.

Pack 2 pick 3:
Death Cultist
Lone Missionary
Kabira Vindicator
Living Destiny
Pennon Blade
Ogre Sentry
Guard Gomazoa
Nema Siltlurker
--> Devastating Summons
Bala Ged Scorpion
Shared Discovery
Lagac Lizard
Island

I took the summons here as in the right deck its a bomb, however this deck was not the deck and i ended up not playing it

Pack 2 pick 4:
Skeletal Wurm
Lay Bare
Jwari Scuttler
Stalwart Shield-Bearers
Dawnglare Invoker
Wrap in Flames
--> Null Champion
Kiln Fiend
Emerge Unscathed
Shared Discovery
Distortion Strike
Swamp

Disappointing pack, null champion as a mediocre on colour pick felt better than the invoker

Pack 2 pick 5:
Skeletal Wurm
Curse of Wizardry
Forked Bolt
Deprive
Might of the Masses
Null Champion
Glory Seeker
Repel the Darkness
Eland Umbra
--> Prophetic Prism
Forest

Here i opted to gurantee myself good mana and the luxury of splashing with seemless easy over another champion, i have more prophetic prisms than any other roe card, I believe one of the edges i have in this format contributing to the sucess im experincing at the moment is in part due to my higher valuing of prophetic prism.

Pack 2 pick 6:
Death Cultist
Lone Missionary
Irresistible Prey
Living Destiny
Sporecap Spider
--> Ogre Sentry
Nema Siltlurker
Lagac Lizard
Not of This World
Forest

Pack 2 pick 7:
Lay Bare
Boar Umbra
Ogre's Cleaver
Stomper Cub
See Beyond
--> Vendetta
Ikiral Outrider
Virulent Swipe
Plains

What? this is almost certainly wrong but a great catch and a very promising sign

Pack 2 pick 8:
Inquisition of Kozilek
--> Cadaver Imp
Hand of Emrakul
Glory Seeker
Fissure Vent
Merfolk Observer
Hyena Umbra
Plains

Black is clearly the colour to be in

Pack 2 pick 9:
Valakut Fireboar
Death Cultist
Shrivel
Smite
--> Null Champion
Demystify
Swamp

Mediocre guy which is actually better in the sort of deck that is taking shape now, so happy about this pick for once

Pack 2 pick 10:
Jwari Scuttler
--> Bloodrite Invoker
Smite
Harmless Assault
Leaf Arrow
Island

Decent mana sink

Pack 2 pick 11:
Death Cultist
Living Destiny
--> Bala Ged Scorpion
Shared Discovery
Island

These sort of level picks this late is a good sign we are in the right base colour

Pack 2 pick 12:
--> Lay Bare
Stalwart Shield-Bearers
Shared Discovery
Swamp

Pack 2 pick 13:
--> Glory Seeker
Eland Umbra
Forest

Pack 2 pick 14:
--> Death Cultist
Forest

Pack 2 pick 15:
--> Plains

------ ROE ------

Pack 3 pick 1:
Guard Duty
Jaddi Lifestrider
Emrakul's Hatcher
Grotag Siege-Runner
Cadaver Imp
Battle-Rattle Shaman
Puncturing Light
--> Narcolepsy
Domestication
Enatu Golem
Daggerback Basilisk
Devastating Summons
Ondu Giant
Essence Feed
Mountain

Powefull pack, I certainly do not wnat more than 1 devestating summons, leaving the pick between narcolespy and domestication, I went for the lighter and the mana spell, as we have few blue cards currently.

Pack 3 pick 2:
Demonic Appetite
Naturalize
Venerated Teacher
Stalwart Shield-Bearers
--> Surreal Memoir
Shrivel
Khalni Hydra
Ogre Sentry
Beastbreaker of Bala Ged
Goblin Arsonist
Harmless Assault
Merfolk Observer
Fleeting Distraction
Mountain

Best breaker is not really a good card to splash, but memoir works nicely with double vendetta, plus we could play a deprive if needs be.

Pack 3 pick 3:
Death Cultist
Gloomhunter
Bramblesnap
Splinter Twin
Emrakul's Hatcher (FOIL)
Arrogant Bloodlord
Shrivel
Bloodrite Invoker
Wrap in Flames
Smite
--> Rapacious One
Leaf Arrow
Swamp

Strong pack, splinter twin is just asking to get 2 for 1 ed and once again the double mana cost is off puttinng, whilst rapacious one is a reasonable winner which beside gelationous genesis we do not have to many off.

Pack 3 pick 4:
Spawning Breath
Gravitational Shift
Frostwind Invoker
--> Induce Despair
Caravan Escort
Stomper Cub
Pawn of Ulamog
Vendetta
Daggerback Basilisk
Repel the Darkness
Emerge Unscathed
Plains

I think a 1st induce despair is better than a 3rd vendetta, considering we have ways to reur spells and you can only cast vendetta so many times before it kills you and the induce gives us a broader range of answers to creatures when we consider the deck as a whole, ie it can kill black creatures, drawing double vendetta is often no fun vs other black decks.

Pack 3 pick 5:
Unified Will
Jwari Scuttler
--> Deprive
Sporecap Spider
Wrap in Flames
Bala Ged Scorpion
Harmless Assault
Merfolk Observer
Affa Guard Hound
Mountain
Leaf Arrow

Felt better than the second scorpion, is not really a spell we are looking to play early so mana cost is not a problem

Pack 3 pick 6:
Guard Duty
Gloomhunter
Explosive Revelation
--> Induce Despair
Zof Shade
Caravan Escort
Suffer the Past
Daggerback Basilisk
Surrakar Spellblade
Forest

Wow another induce depair is great news for us this deck is getting sick

Pack 3 pick 7:
--> Merfolk Skyscout
Might of the Masses
Contaminated Ground
Nema Siltlurker (FOIL)
Shared Discovery
Harmless Assault
Bloodthrone Vampire
Demystify
Mountain

Solid if mana intensive

Pack 3 pick 8:
Champion's Drake
--> Frostwind Invoker
Bloodrite Invoker
See Beyond
Smite
Totem-Guide Hartebeest
Ikiral Outrider
Plains

much the same

Pack 3 pick 9:
Grotag Siege-Runner
--> Cadaver Imp
Battle-Rattle Shaman
Puncturing Light
Enatu Golem
Essence Feed
Mountain

More incremental advnatge is welcome

Pack 3 pick 10:
Demonic Appetite
Goblin Arsonist
Harmless Assault
Merfolk Observer
--> Fleeting Distraction
Mountain

Pack 3 pick 11:
Death Cultist
Gloomhunter
Bramblesnap
--> Shrivel
Swamp

Pack 3 pick 12:
Gravitational Shift
--> Pawn of Ulamog
Repel the Darkness
Plains

Pack 3 pick 13:
--> Jwari Scuttler
Merfolk Observer
Mountain

Pack 3 pick 14:
--> Zof Shade
Forest

Pack 3 pick 15:
--> Mountain

The deck

1 flame slash
2 vendetta
3 prophetic prism
1 deprive
1 narcolepsy
2 null champion
2 induce despiar
2 cadaver imp
1 sureal memoir
1 bala ged scorpion
1 dreadzone
2 frostwind invoker
1 memnomic wall
1 rapacious one
1 gelationous genesis
5 islands
4 mountain
9 swamp

Sadly games would take me far to much time to write up with this deck as all but finals went long and ended up with me winning with less than 5 minutes left on clock, so sorry im not prepared to type that up.

Feedback appreciated.

As always, good read, Trotsky. Keep up the draft reports, they're fun to read and informative.

If you don't like white, why not pick Deprive p1p3?

Also, just out of curiousity, have you ever taken a Surreal Memoir pack 1? This is the second time you've said "oh noes I has only 1 instants" in order to reject it in pack 1. You'd already passed two Walls at this point, but this draft I definitely would have gone Vendetta, Treespeaker, Deprive, Wall, Wall, Memoir, and draft a solid Grixis deck.

At the start the tree speaker gave me the false impression green was open when it was clearly not, so i was hesistant to take the walls, which would have ended up with me with a better deck. But sol ring i a card mst people would go a bit out of there way to play in limited me included.

And no i rarely take memoir pack 1 as alot of drafts you an not coun on getting enough instants, I say this from experience. That combined with the fact they often wheel and go late anyway gives me little reason to pick them early over more defnate playable cards. I ended up getting memoir much later anyway, this draft when i knew i was going to be good rather than having to gamble on taking it early and hoping the draters either side ofme do not like removal, which most people do.

Oh and thankyou dipwell for your kind words.

Pack 1 Pick 6 you definitely should've taken Bala Ged Scorpion over the 2nd prophetic prism, I know you got one later, but I think you seriously undervalued the scorpion there. He eats so many awesome creatures.

Pack 2 Pick 9 Valakut Fireboar might have been correct here. It is the kind of card that I think excels in removal heavy decks because they don't have any relevant blockers for him. He's also not shabby on defense.

And coolcreep, yes, in retrospect, those would've been the picks to make, but when you're actually drafting in real time it is much more difficult to predict what will come around and what will show up in general. Oust is probably a much more solid card there than Deprive, which I don't even like that much anyway in Grixis. Especially in this one, where all of your win conditions are more than 4 mana to cast.

Seemed like a pretty solid draft overall, though. Congrats on the win.

On scorpion I also like him also but they come very late as well most drafts for some reason, its not a card i like more than one off in the main also, whilst multiple prisms just makes your mana so good and splashing really easy.

Gelatinous genesis won me atleast one game every round, where in most of the cases the other option in the gensis pack the artisan would not have, with out the 2 prisms early it would be harder for me to justify taking the genesis and also harder to freely just take whatever card is best in the pack out of 3 colours, with scant regard for colour discipline.

Also im quite confidant, null champion is the correct pick as he himself is a mana intensive but fine win condition plus is good on turn 2. I still do not like him in level up decks, generally i do not think multiple mana intensive creatures all in the same deck is a good stratergy.

Whilst in slow controlling decks with few creatures the champion is probably at its best, dodging corpse hatches and vendettas and once fully leveled which the decks should be equipped to create the time to do is a solid win condition with few real answers.
