Back with another 4-3-2-2 were gonna take a break from drafts I won, to look at one i lost first round in. Then Im gonna discuss the problems I found with the deck.

Event #: 1250327
Time: 5/24/2010 2:52:32 PM
Players:
dentrogenis
Badgchm
goustaronaskavo
DawnSlayer
--> ElementalMox
jcho18
tiger_bl_ack38
smittytherot92280

------ ROE ------

Pack 1 pick 1:
Skeletal Wurm
Inquisition of Kozilek
Guard Duty
Joraga Treespeaker
Aura Gnarlid
Mnemonic Wall
Induce Despair
Zof Shade
Might of the Masses
Kor Line-Slinger
Regress
Lavafume Invoker
--> Bear Umbra
Bloodthrone Vampire
Island

Okayish pack bear umbra can sometimes result in you completely overwhelming your opponent with guys, the tree speaker is good accel but overgrown battlememnt is actually better than it. Regress is solid put the umbra has the most potential.

Pack 1 pick 2:
Lone Missionary
Living Destiny
Deprive
Battle Rampart
Prey's Vengeance
Raid Bombardment
Contaminated Ground
Nema Siltlurker
Glory Seeker
Oust
Spider Umbra
--> Recurring Insight
Demystify
Mountain

I can never get this card to be good infact i think its bad, whenever ive seen someone play it its flopped, just can not afford to spend your 6th turn situtaionally drawing an amount of cards in this format, its slow but not that slow.

Pack 1 pick 3:
Soul's Attendant
Battle-Rattle Shaman
Pennon Blade
--> Last Kiss
Snake Umbra
Sphinx-Bone Wand
Aura Finesse
Goblin Arsonist
Sea Gate Oracle
Bala Ged Scorpion
Totem-Guide Hartebeest
Virulent Swipe
Island

Another average sort of back, last kiss is a bot above all the other cards, mainly as it kills dawnglare invoker, that common that just wins the game at 8 mana.

Pack 1 pick 4:
Demonic Appetite
Naturalize
--> Frostwind Invoker
Crab Umbra
Surreal Memoir
Dread Drone
Goblin Arsonist
Ondu Giant
Merfolk Observer
Ikiral Outrider
Hyena Umbra
Island

Most powerfull card in pack is surreal memoir, but here i go with the invoker as a solid evasive guy, i think hes a little better than dread drone.

Pack 1 pick 5:
Wildheart Invoker
Curse of Wizardry
Pennon Blade
Raid Bombardment
Ogre Sentry
Brood Birthing
Ulamog's Crusher
Essence Feed
--> Halimar Wavewatch
Fleeting Distraction
Swamp

Another pack with three solid cards, the wave watcher that im a huge fan off, the wild heart invoker, that in terms of power in my opinion is not far behind dawnglare and the crusher, which ends games fast once down. I think despite the invoker green is not open so i take the wavewatcher.

Pack 1 pick 6:
--> Jwari Scuttler
Crab Umbra
Ogre's Cleaver
Stalwart Shield-Bearers
Might of the Masses
Contaminated Ground
Perish the Thought
Shared Discovery
Fissure Vent
Mountain

Disappointing

Pack 1 pick 7:
Death Cultist
Lone Missionary
Ancient Stirrings
--> Venerated Teacher
Dreamstone Hedron
Ogre Sentry
Gravity Well
Repel the Darkness
Swamp

Has the most potential, at its best in blue black

Pack 1 pick 8:
Gloomhunter
Lightmine Field
Explosive Revelation
Zof Shade
Haze Frog
Daggerback Basilisk
--> Escaped Null
Forest

This was a tough pick, but the escaped null is a really good defensive creature that buys you alot of time plus kills a big guy, whilst a cheap flyer is less what i think this deck needs

Pack 1 pick 9:
Inquisition of Kozilek
--> Mnemonic Wall
Zof Shade
Might of the Masses
Kor Line-Slinger
Bloodthrone Vampire
Island

Good if i get some powerfull instant or sorcery spells

Pack 1 pick 10:
Living Destiny
Raid Bombardment
Contaminated Ground
--> Nema Siltlurker
Demystify
Mountain

Decent level up guy

Pack 1 pick 11:
Soul's Attendant
--> Snake Umbra
Sphinx-Bone Wand
Aura Finesse
Island

Pack 1 pick 12:
Demonic Appetite
Goblin Arsonist
--> Merfolk Observer
Island

Pack 1 pick 13:
--> Pennon Blade
Raid Bombardment
Swamp

Pack 1 pick 14:
--> Shared Discovery
Mountain

Pack 1 pick 15:
--> Swamp

------ ROE ------

Pack 2 pick 1:
Rage Nimbus
Jaddi Lifestrider
Aura Gnarlid
Explosive Revelation
Makindi Griffin
Battle-Rattle Shaman
--> Last Kiss
Snake Umbra
Skywatcher Adept
Zulaport Enforcer
Hand of Emrakul
Reality Spasm
Rapacious One (FOIL)
Hyena Umbra
Forest

Its removal even if not the best

Pack 2 pick 2:
Spawning Breath
--> Gloomhunter
Gravitational Shift
Jaddi Lifestrider
Grotag Siege-Runner
Haze Frog
See Beyond
Hand of Emrakul
Runed Servitor
Knight of Cliffhaven
Distortion Strike
Ikiral Outrider
Not of This World
Forest

Going to try and wheel the shift and grab the gloomhunter

Pack 2 pick 3:
Angelheart Vial
Mnemonic Wall
Surreal Memoir
Dawnglare Invoker
Pathrazer of Ulamog
Hand of Emrakul
Lavafume Invoker
--> Enclave Cryptologist
Kiln Fiend
Sea Gate Oracle
Distortion Strike
Hyena Umbra
Plains

I wonder which is better dawnglare or cyrptologist both win games pretty fast unchecked I guess cryptologist as he comes on line faster but then again dawn glare beats in the mean time

Pack 2 pick 4:
Death Cultist
Wildheart Invoker
Goblin Tunneler
Gloomhunter
Shrivel
Wrap in Flames
Flame Slash
Gravity Well
--> Halimar Wavewatch
Knight of Cliffhaven
Leaf Arrow
Swamp

Solid pack, I think perhasp I should have took the flame slash here, as i currently have no removal that can kill big guys and Im running out of time to pick up any, the wavewatcher is solid though

Pack 2 pick 5:
Crab Umbra (FOIL)
Sporecap Spider
--> Dread Drone
Caravan Escort
See Beyond
Oust
Emerge Unscathed
Lagac Lizard
Escaped Null
Ikiral Outrider
Island

Good if you have a crusher plus trades with fatties

Pack 2 pick 6:
Vent Sentinel
Emrakul's Hatcher
Eel Umbra
Zof Shade
Luminous Wake
--> Narcolepsy
Hand of Emrakul
Reality Spasm
Essence Feed
Plains

Very late narcolepsy

Pack 2 pick 7:
Guard Duty
Cadaver Imp
--> Skywatcher Adept
Hand of Emrakul
Suffer the Past
Reinforced Bulwark
Ondu Giant
Affa Guard Hound
Swamp

Okay level up guy

Pack 2 pick 8:
Death Cultist
Goblin Tunneler
Curse of Wizardry
Lay Bare
--> Dreamstone Hedron
Shrivel
Raid Bombardment
Swamp

Pack 2 pick 9:
Explosive Revelation
Makindi Griffin
Snake Umbra
--> Hand of Emrakul
Reality Spasm
Hyena Umbra
Forest

Pack 2 pick 10:
Haze Frog
--> See Beyond
Hand of Emrakul
Distortion Strike
Not of This World
Forest

Did not wheel shift damn was worth a shot

Pack 2 pick 11:
Mnemonic Wall
Hand of Emrakul
--> Sea Gate Oracle
Distortion Strike
Plains

Late oracle

Pack 2 pick 12:
Death Cultist
Goblin Tunneler
--> Gravity Well
Swamp

Pack 2 pick 13:
--> See Beyond
Ikiral Outrider
Island

Pack 2 pick 14:
--> Zof Shade
Plains

Pack 2 pick 15:
--> Swamp

------ ROE ------

Pack 3 pick 1:
Jwari Scuttler
Lust for War
Deprive
Might of the Masses
Wrap in Flames
Contaminated Ground
Beastbreaker of Bala Ged
Repay in Kind
--> Ulamog's Crusher
Glory Seeker
Eland Umbra
Runed Servitor
Harmless Assault
Leaf Arrow
Mountain

I always like one of these in my decks, they do just win games unchecked

Pack 3 pick 2:
Wildheart Invoker
Champion's Drake
Aura Gnarlid
Mnemonic Wall
Induce Despair
Battle-Rattle Shaman
Bloodrite Invoker
Smite
Lavafume Invoker
Beastbreaker of Bala Ged
--> Coralhelm Commander
Daggerback Basilisk
Hada Spy Patrol
Mountain

This was a tough pick, I really need to induce despair as removal, but coralhlem commander is an outright bomb in my deck.

Pack 3 pick 3:
Ancient Stirrings
Naturalize
Champion's Drake (FOIL)
Irresistible Prey
Tajuru Preserver
Lay Bare
Arrogant Bloodlord
Aura Finesse
Soulbound Guardians
--> Null Champion
Eland Umbra
Bloodthrone Vampire
Forest

More expensive level up guys, this should prob have been the arrogant bloodlord

Pack 3 pick 4:
Valakut Fireboar
Evolving Wilds
Haze Frog
Nema Siltlurker
Ulamog's Crusher
--> Hada Spy Patrol
Repel the Darkness
Halimar Wavewatch
Shared Discovery
Phantasmal Abomination
Leaf Arrow
Swamp

This i think should have been, the wavewatcher, its just so much more efficent, spy is alot of mana for not that powerfull an effect

Pack 3 pick 5:
Wildheart Invoker
Living Destiny
Ogre's Cleaver
Bloodrite Invoker
Smite
--> Perish the Thought
Lagac Lizard
Fissure Vent
Phantasmal Abomination
Prophetic Prism
Mountain

Here if i had took the flame slash i could take the prophetic prism

Pack 3 pick 6:
Unified Will
Frostwind Invoker
Evolving Wilds
--> Eel Umbra
Bloodrite Invoker
Stomper Cub
Haze Frog
Pelakka Wurm
Daggerback Basilisk
Plains

I actually have so many level up guys that a way of keeping them from dying and wasting all that mana seemed more valueable to me than the flyer, what is it with all thesse pekkula wurms. last draft i was in i got paired vs one in finals after hating 2 in pack 3, he had vengevine and devestating summons also, I still won thanks to mammoth umbra plus dawnglare invoker:)

Pack 3 pick 7:
Contaminated Ground
Glory Seeker
Spider Umbra
Shared Discovery
Harmless Assault
Fissure Vent
Merfolk Observer
--> Demystify
Mountain

Pack 3 pick 8:
Valakut Fireboar
Bramblesnap
Battle Rampart
Snake Umbra
Aura Finesse
--> Sea Gate Oracle
Bloodthrone Vampire
Plains

Pack 3 pick 9:
Jwari Scuttler
--> Deprive
Contaminated Ground
Glory Seeker
Runed Servitor
Harmless Assault
Mountain

Pack 3 pick 10:
Wildheart Invoker
--> Champion's Drake
Mnemonic Wall
Lavafume Invoker
Daggerback Basilisk
Mountain

Lots of late invokers that are going to hurt me

Pack 3 pick 11:
Ancient Stirrings
Irresistible Prey
--> Lay Bare
Aura Finesse
Forest

Pack 3 pick 12:
Nema Siltlurker
Shared Discovery
--> Phantasmal Abomination
Swamp

Pack 3 pick 13:
Living Destiny
--> Fissure Vent
Mountain

Pack 3 pick 14:
--> Haze Frog
Plains

Pack 3 pick 15:
--> Mountain

Okay a couple of things, I think I made some clear bad picks this draft, like not taking the flame slash and the spy over the wavewatcher but now onto the deck.

The deck

1 enclave cryptologist
1 skywatcher adept
1 see beyond
1 deprive
1 eel umbra
1 narcolepsy
1 champions drake
1 coralhelm commander
1 hadra spy patrol
2 halimar wavewatcher
1 null champion
2 last kiss
1 gloomhunter
2 seagate oracle
1 venerated teacher
1 dreadzone
1 frostwind invoker
1 recurring insight
1 ulamogs crusher
11 islands
7 swamps

The deck actually looks okay but in all honesty for this format, its a little underpowered and has some huge problems.

The one that proved to cost it the game was no answer to a resloved wildheart invoker, which cost it both games, all decks in this format want answers to both common invokers (green white) or if it not the ability to out race them. Secondly the level up guys that cost 3 mana and more were really inefficent this also was very telling in all the games i played where often i had a choice for the turn between leveling up and casting another spell not a good place to be in. Also I drew alot of my level up guys in all games and although the deck does not have a huge amount of them, a large problem with this is it can leave you with some very disappointing creatures on the board. I hope this deck and the discussion of its failings gives some insight to people to drafting better decks in the format.

Feedback appreciated.

1 pack 1 pick
Induce Despair. Its a removal, and a very good one. Better than umbra any time i think.

Hmm yeah totally missed that when reviewing pack I agree should have been that. Shortly before doing this draft it was a few days ago, Id used bear umbra, for some pretty sick turns and it was biasing my opinion, its good but i also think despair is better.

fair choice. Having picked the umbra though (i dont think it's such a bad call, after all), and seing in a row, oust, totem heatbeast, hyena umbra was giving a good game plan.

I agree green seemed blocked, though not the aura archetype cards.

I made your draft following this idea and ended up with:

- 5-6 good auras (bear,hyena, snake-) no boar of mammoth though Sad

- aura targets : 2 gnarlids, 2 basilisks, griffin, ikiral outrider
+ wildheart invokers, a pelakka and beast breaker in the process.

that's enough for good aggro and evasion.

+couple of ousts, smite, repel the darkness for removal/tempo advantage

pelaka and dawnglare, even wildheart for late game.
(wildheart invoker loves that bear umbra)

Easy to say once you see all the cards, but that would have been my draft instead of forcing black :/

I think your deck not only lacks power, but consistency with these levelers and only 1 teacher, not enough removal. Good call on the eel umbra and counterspells though, but this was leading to a mid late game plan to lvl your dudes and some archetypes do better at this (not to say ramp eldrazi).

ps: you don't want to splash red for that 1 flame stash when you don't have access to ondu giants. you'd need at least 2 such manafixers (evolving winds+prisms). that's worth splashing for a bomb. flame slash is good, but i would'nt splash w/o green unless i have let's say: heat ray

that said, I'm not a pro, happy to discuss these choices and improve my draft ideas in the process!

Anyway, thanks for the review. It's not easy to open oneself to criticism. What would be interesting is talking about your matches and what your actually faced!
