So I've been playing Mythic for a couple weeks now, and I'm growing very tired of getting draws full of mana dorks and not a whole lot else. I mean sure, you get those draws that are just hard to catch up to, but then you can also get those where you're forced to play Bird after Bird and Cobra after Cobra with nothing to use them for. My question is this: Are the Birds really necessary? I mean, the deck is already running 27 lands, PLUS Hierarch AND Cobra. I know the deck wants fast starts that plays things ahead of time, but would swapping out the Birds for, say, either main-deck Bant Charms or the 2 Stoneforge/1 Collar/1 Sledge package really hurt the deck that much? I've been playing with this list lately, and even though I don't get turn 2 War Monks quite as often, it's still been performing quite well. How much worse is this list than the ones with Birds? A little bit of main-deck removal can't hurt...

Deck file for Magic Workstation (http://www.magicworkstation.com)

// Lands
5 [ZEN] Forest (1a)
2 [ZEN] Island (1)
3 [WWK] Celestial Colonnade
4 [ZEN] Misty Rainforest
2 [WWK] Sejiri Steppe
3 [WWK] Stirring Wildwood
2 [M10] Sunpetal Grove
4 [ZEN] Verdant Catacombs
2 [ZEN] Plains (1a)

// Creatures
4 [M10] Baneslayer Angel
4 [CFX] Knight of the Reliquary
4 [ZEN] Lotus Cobra
4 [CFX] Noble Hierarch
4 [ALA] Rhox War Monk
3 [ALA] Rafiq of the Many
2 [CFX] Thornling
1 [ZEN] Sphinx of Jwar Isle

// Spells
3 [ARB] Finest Hour
4 [ALA] Bant Charm

// Sideboard
SB: 4 [M10] Negate
SB: 2 [ZEN] Day of Judgment
SB: 2 [ARB] Qasali Pridemage
SB: 2 [WWK] Vapor Snare
SB: 2 [ARB] Dauntless Escort
SB: 3 [M10] Great Sable Stag

The sideboard is my FNM sideboard, so it probably looks kinda rough, but that's for what I face every week. But mainly, if I were to take this list to a major tournament, what type of disadvantages will this have compared to the "traditional" Mythic lists with Birds?

Well, the mana base is a straight copy of the list that just won a National Qualifier in Portugal as seen on deckcheck.net, with the only change being my 2nd Plains over a 4th Colonnade. Before that, I got the manabase from the 2nd place Mythic list from GP Brussels, so I trust that it's a good one. There are a good number of ETBT lands, yes, but there are also 13 ways to get a Forest turn 1 to counteract the Sunpetals. The 2nd Plains I added was also a consideration to this. I rarely have mana trouble, it's the mana DORKS that sometimes are the problem.

And as far as mulliganing, of course I do, but when you keep a good opener and nothing but dorks shows up after that, once they kill your first threat or two, drawing dork after dork when they may be dropping finishers kinda sucks.

Anyone have an answer to the question? Are the Birds actually necessary?

Really the option of having 12 dorks or 8 dorks is a hard choice to give advice on really I would just play test it and find what you like. Also your magic workstation master base is messed up you have ZEN lands that have 3a, 2a etc.... those lands can cause your security code to not match up when you join minis just a warning.

To answer, I'd like to compare Mythic with the old Trinity Green (also featuring 12 mana dorks, Birds, Llanowar Elves and Priest of Titania). The deck focuses on early turn Mana Dork play, then a big spell on the 2nd or 3rd turn (usually Plow Under) and proceed to win (Plow Under really, REALLY puts an opponent back two turns).

What does this Mythic do? Almost the same thing, mana dorks on the first and/or second turn, followed by a big spell (albiet creature) in the form of Baneslayer, Rafiq, Finest Hour, etc.

Mana dorks, by themselves, do nothing (except for the occasional 1 point of combat damage). However, it's their ability to power out large spells two or three turns before their opponent that gives them the advantage. And, as with all good decks, the card advantage is evident. If they don't kill your 'dorks' early, they'll power out the big stuff. If they do kill your 'dorks' early, they'll be -1 removal spell for your big stuff.

I've tested out Trinity Green waaaay back then, so I know that all 12 creatures back then were essential. A third turn Plow Under resolving usually means that I'll win, the same way as a third turn Baneslayer (left alive) will greatly increase your chances of winning (but it's no Plow Under, haha).

Maybe the deck wouldn't be hurt that much by the removal of birds, and would not be much worse than a list with Birds, but why would you make it worse at all?
Rule of thumb - if you don't understand why a card is in a deck, don't remove it ("I know the deck wants fast starts" doesn't count)
Specifically about adding removal - don't, the strength of the deck comes from simply not caring about opponent's creatures.

You could use the birds as Hierarch number 5 and 6 (running two) rather than 5-8. You may not actually need 8 1-mana accelerators. Six may well be a better number.

remember who sits in the aggro seat. you do. the strength of the deck is that you play ahead of the curve and it's up to your opponent to catch up. a card like rhox war monk isn't special for killing them quickly but he is tough to deal with and will make sure that they don't race you... he forces your opponent out of his desired seek if they wanted to race you.

the switch i personally like best is sphinx of jwar isle and thornling... these creatures don't LET your opponent back in the game.
