Here's a challenge for anyone, if they want to try:

Make a UR deck running Pyromaster Ascension, burn and card draw, and try to figure out some good cards to make it playable. There is a build out there that wins by turn 5/6.

Don't try and look at or use anyone else's decklists (except those posted here), just make it on your own and post! Have fun!

I tried this deck, went soooo bad and left improving it. Very Happy

// Lands
4 [ZEN] Scalding Tarn
11 [ST] Island (2)
5 [US] Mountain (4)

// Spells
4 [M10] Twincast
4 [ZEN] Spell Pierce
4 [M10] Ponder
4 [M10] Tome Scour
4 [M10] Lightning Bolt
4 [M10] Pyroclasm
4 [ZEN] Pyromancer Ascension
4 [ZEN] Archive Trap
4 [M10] Divination
4 [ZEN] Into the Roil

Burst Lightning and Banefire can also be viable options. You can cut Spell Pierce and Into the Roil for them.

lol that is one direction to go.

But the deck from worlds that ran this used direct damage to win.
So switch out Tome Scour and Archive Trap for different cards.

Hint: there is a certain 5-drop sorcery that is absolutely amazing when copied, especially multiple times.

Banefires not really great in the deck because it doesn't copy the value for X, so you get squat.

actually you are incorrect it copies the X part as it copies the spell of the stack and on the stack X = X for spells such as banefire

I think the netdecked RUG lacks the card draw and damage necessary to win consistently.

The RUB Cruel Ultimatum Deck has merit, but it should play instants/sorceries instead of planeswalkers.

To get the most out of the deck use 4-ofs instead of 2, 3, and 4. And use cheap spells

Potential Cheap Card Draw:
Ponder
Worldly Council
Divination
Howling Mine (not a sorcery)

Potential Cheap Burn:
Lightning Bolt
Burst Lightning
Punishing Fire

Other U or R or UR can be added, like counterspells, bounce, twincast, etc...

but you definitely need most of the cheap spells above - especially draw - and at least 2-4 finishers. Banefire works best, because it can't be countered or prevented.

Try 22 lands and 4x Time Warp.

Are you sure? I thought the value for X on copied spells was allways zero

Gatherer Card Rulings [Nov 2009]

* 10/1/2009: If either of Pyromancer Ascension's abilities triggers, it will go on the stack on top of the spell that caused it to trigger. The ability will resolve first. If it's Pyromancer Ascension's second ability that triggered, the copy it creates will also resolve before the original spell. The copy is created even if the original spell has been countered.
* 10/1/2009: If Pyromancer Ascension's first ability triggers, you'll put a quest counter on it even if the card in your graveyard leaves your graveyard by the time the ability resolves.
* 10/1/2009: If you cast an instant or sorcery spell from your graveyard (due to an ability such as retrace, for example), Pyromancer Ascension's first ability won't trigger unless another card with the same name is in your graveyard.
* 10/1/2009: The second ability triggers only if Pyromancer Ascension already has two quest counters on it at the time you cast an instant or sorcery spell. This means a spell can't both cause the second counter to be put on Pyromancer Ascension and become copied.
* 10/1/2009: If you copy a spell, the copy will have the same targets as the spell it's copying unless you choose new ones. You may change any number of the targets, including all of them or none of them.
* 10/1/2009: You may copy an instant or sorcery spell that has no targets.
* 10/1/2009: If the original spell was kicked, the copy is kicked too. Other decisions made for the original spell, such as the value of X or the mode, are also copied.
