It has the same wording has Iona, Shield of Emeria and when Iona leaves play the color still can't be played... why is Meddling Mage different?
I think its because of the last known information rule which logically doesn't make any sense imo, is that it? It remembers the color but not the card ? lol.
EDIT:
Another rule that doesn't make sense realistically is if I block with a creature then sac the creature b4 combat dmg, I will receive no combat damage.
If your at war, your enemy is coming towards you and is about to strike at the guy in front of you and he dodges, when your enemy strikes (deals combat dmg) your in trouble |

Iona's ability is the same as meddling mage, they are both state based effects, if they leave play when game state is checked again the card and/or color can be played...
As for the other ruling your talking about, I am not sure what your confused about based on how you worked the last part of your edit.... but when you block with a creature if you sacrifice it before combat damage, neither creature will receive damage since one is gone....
For example... I attack you with my Dauntless Escort and you block him with a Baneslayer Angel
I dont want you to gain the 5 life from lifelink, so before combat damage is dealt I sacrifice him to make all my creatures indestructable. When the baneslayer angel tries to attack the creature she blocked, it is no longer there and no combat damage is dealt therefore you would gain no life. |

I asked my opponent this yesterday and he responded:
"LOL
OBV"
Then he tried to PM the quote of me asking it to his friend in IRC, but accidentally sent it to me.
Cool guy. |

Ok, Iona, Shield of Emeria nor Meddling Mage have state-based effects, they have static abilities (the term no longer exists, nor could anyone every 'have them').
Their static abilities only function for as long as they are in play. Just like Glorious Anthem stops applying if you destroy it, so do Iona and the Mage stop applying if they are destroyed (and not 'when the game state is checked', right away).
And to your second question: whether or not it makes sense, the rules are as they are. When something is blocked it stays blocked, no matter what happens to the blocking creature. |

If the enemy sends troops to attack your home base and encounters your defenders on the way, both sides preparing for battle then the defenders vanishes into thin air, they wouldn't reach the enemy base that day.
It is not as illogical as it seems. |

Basically, Pillsburry was wrong.. You obviously can play the color chosen by Iona after you take it out from game, right?
Just to be sure... |

Yes, that's what I said two weeks ago. |
