you see magic generally has a really friendly community,but over the internet i rate its just too hard to teach someone form scrach,i advise you find some in your area that plays magic(like at a FNM event)that will be a better way for you to learn anayway. then you can play here

search for a magic store in your area and then u can learn just watch some ppl can be idiot and other friendly not everybody is friendly in real life

Thanks guys. I wanted to find someone in my area but i live bout an hour from the nearest group that meets and plays so I thought I would give online playing a try.

you can always download th modo client and play some free games, just to see how the game works.
In the past, wizards also distributed an introductory cd with starter packs. I don't know if they still do, and if it can be downloaded somewhere. I might go and take a look where I got a copy, and see if I can upload it.
