First off, the day was a good day and the meta was surprising and im curious to know if anyone else's had as much fog / BW Tokens. I picked up a BG Rock deck that I played like, a year ago from winning a $3k in Stratford, CT and just change it to fix to make it good in the metagame. Anyway here's the list and the run down:
4x Treetop Village
3x Mutavault
4x Gilt-Leaf Palace
4x Llanowar Wastes
2x Twilight Mire
4x Forest
3x Swamp
4x Wren's Run Vanquisher
4x Civic Wayfinder
3x Chameleon Colossus
4x Kitchen Finks
2x Shriekmaw
3x Murderous Redcap
4x Nameless Inversion
2x Maelstrom Pulse
2x Eyeblight's Ending
2x Profane Command
2x Garruk Wildspeaker
3x Thoughtseize
1x Loxodon Warhammer
SB:
3x Primal Command
4x Infest
1x Maelstrom Pulse
1x Thoughtseize
2x Mind Shatter
2x Wickerbough Elder
1x Pithing Needle
1x Shriekmaw
Now to the report..
Round 1: URW Swans
Game 1- I see two wall of denials and a swans that takes a nameless inversion and its over pretty quickly.
Game 2- I open up strong with t1 tseize t2 vanquisher but he ends up drawing the nuts and has an answer for everything.
Game 3- He mulls to five, i double thoughtseize him and he never gets a blue source to get in the game.
1-0
Round 2: BW Kithkin
Game 1- He had some problems with a couple buddies of mine so of course when they saw the pairings they wanted me to win but I had no clue on what he (Sean Mecowen) was playing but I was pretty sure he was good ya kno? Anyway, game one he just doesnt have that much gas and my guys were just bigger.
Game 2- Decent starts from both sides going back to fourth. It comes down to my Maelstrom Pulse fizzling and then it getting pretty even. However, Profane Command does what it does best and I ended up getting there.
2-0
Round 3: UW Lark
Game 1- I feel like im 100% winning the match and he stabilizes and draws very well. Drifters into a lark and path and i just cant keep enough threats on board. He ends up winning.
Game 2- Man lands get there. It's as simple as that. Treetop and mutavault ended up dealing 14-16 damage and it got there. He didnt have much.
Game 3- He mulls, i thoughtseize him and his hand is awful. He draws really well and in top deck mode I get the edge with man lands.
3-0
Round 4: Jund Ramp (completely untested matchup)
So, I have no idea how this plays how but I win the die roll which obviously is huge.
Game 1-I open up with t1 tseize and his hand is fairly weak, cloudthresher wayfinder and a volcanic fallout so I just take the thresher and see where things go. I ended up drawing very good because he ripped a thresher which if got to block i would've lost but that turn ripped an eyeblight's ending and Chameleon Colossus was just pretty insane. Definately the best card in that matchup.
Game 2- It's as simple as a Mind Shatter for 3 on turn five wins the game. I hit double Broodmate and a Banefire with him having six lands in play due to rampant growths. It was pretty much a blow out from that part. No disrespect though, I know him from the Grid Games.
4-0
Round 5: BW Tokens
Game 1- It's pretty much a blowout. He mulls to five and I double thoughtseize him and he's on the play. Wasn't really close. His only play was a procession that I respond with sing Maelstrom Pulse.
Game 2- Again, he mulls but this time to six. However lol, again I have double tseize and two maelstrom pulse's, first one fizzles but I get there.
5-0
Round 5: Bant Control
Game 1- He plays a bunch of blue lands, so I figured im not going to resolve a spell but I get two Finks in play and a Chameleon Colossus, he untaps and wraths, then I untap pulse his Rhox War Monk and kill him with man lands. The lands are the best part of the deck by far.
Game 2- I rip his hand apart with two thoughtseizes and beat him down with a finks. He untaps plays Martial Coup x = 6 and then I pulse the tokens and kill him with a Chameleon Colossus.
6-0
Locked in at this point.
I draw the next two rounds into top 8.
Top 8 is announced "and in 3rd place with 20 points, Jeremy Dombek". I'm pretty stoked and ready to play. Pairings are announced and my opponent is playing Jund Aggro, another untested matchup but I figure it's in my favor. I've got life gain, tons of removal and threats ya kno?
Game 1- He mulls to five, and draws better than anyone I've ever seen and makes a huge game of it. Draws 4 copies of Bloodbraid Elf on the play and if I didnt have a thousand removal spells I probably would've gotten destroyed. I squeak the win out and we go to game 2.
Game 2- He mulls to six and it's really back and fourth for a while until the turn before I thought I stabilized he plays two more guys and I lose. I might of blown that game on making a play error with Profane Command. I start game 3 on tilt because I knew I fucked up.
Game 3- Back and fourth back and fourth, im getting pissed because I dont see a SINGLE primal command the entire match which simply put wins the match and we get down in top deck mode. I pass my final turn with knowing if he draws blightning I die if not I win and he slams down his top deck of his life and Q's for nationals. Cant remember the last time I've been so pissed off.
Anyway, the deck performed really well and I'm definately playing it this PTQ season. Of course I'll have to see if some crazy rogue deck gets out in the open but I'm pretty confident with my choice. I finished 6-0-2 and hopefully pass 1950 in rating for a couple byes as of now for GP:Boston. Side-drafting was fun and the friends make it happen. Any input / response is appreciated. Peace. |

| Well, Im going to be playing 3-4 copies of Maelstrom Pulse main deck during the PTQ season, but the matchup is definately not that bad. It can be with multiple finks but its fine. Kithkin is much easier though. |

| I thought so to. I untap and he's dead but he had to draw 1 of 3 total outs because he didnt play incinerate or flame javelin. It was pretty shitty and im still bitter about it. It happens though. Beverly said it best, good players cant beat luck. |

Windbrsk Heights x4
Rugged Prairie x4
Plains x4
Mountin x4
Path to Exile x3
Volcanic Fallout x2
Ranger of Eos x3
Reveillark x3

Balefire Liege x1
Banefire x1
Martial Coup x1
Sideboard:
Gutteral Response x3
Celestial Purge x2
Oblivion Ring x2
Burrenton Forge-Tender x1
Hollowed Burial x3
Volcanic Fallout x2
Furystoke Giant x2 (There was a lot of Fog decks so this beats them and is good against tokens)
Matchups:
round 1
jund ramp (easy matchup 2-0 me)
round 2,
g/w overrun (he went noble heirarch spec proc, ajani, overrun both games, 0-2) (he also made top 4)
round 3
bant (2-0) (easy)
round 4
b/w tokens (2-1) furystoke giant = wipes their board, plus playing my ajani before he played his wins the matchup.
round 5
mirror match (2-0) (I had flamekin harbinger he didn't, next...)
round 6
jund ramp (2-0) (best matchup for me)
round 7
5 color (1-2) (I was paired down against him and explained to him the math that I would be in the top eight If he scooped and that If he won would not have good enough tie breakers to get in the top, But since the kid was 12 years old he wouldnt scoop and cost me the top eight, He even placed lower than me after the next round...)
round 8
wizards/merfolk (2-0) (you think fallout beats fairies lol, It rapes merfolk)
overall I enjoyed the deck and would definetly play it as long as jund is a big deck in the meta
Im still wish I wasnt boxed out of the top eight cus of a little kid lol

Looks like a play mistake cost you a Q to nats not neccesarly his top deck not trying to be a douche or anything just saying you did have control over it |
