So back with another 8-4 i lost in finals as all I could draw both games was lands and not my ajani or sarkhan that had piggybacked me to finals in all honesty, can not really complain opening 24 tix worth of cards and winning 4 booster to boot.

Event #: 291783
Time: 4/10/2009 9:29:38 PM
Players:
Wirecat
Mayhem420
Ranger7
--> ElementalMox

------ ALA ------

Pack 1 pick 1:
Banewasp Affliction

Hissing Iguanar
Vectis Silencers
Resounding Silence
Deathgreeter
Goblin Deathraiders
Mosstodon
Obelisk of Bant (FOIL)
Sanctum Gargoyle
Rhox War Monk
Seaside Citadel
Corpse Connoisseur
--> Ajani Vengeant
Plains

This was a misspick I meant to take the obelisk of bant as its foil

Pack 1 pick 2:
Jhessian Lookout
Resounding Silence
Dregscape Zombie
Cylian Elf
Soul's Fire
Vectis Silencers
Obelisk of Bant
Wild Nacatl
Incurable Ogre
Windwright Mage
--> Bant Charm
Kiss of the Amesha
Etherium Astrolabe
Mountain

Its between this and the wild nactal, overall I think the bant charm is a fair bit stronger so it was my pick.

Pack 1 pick 3:
Dreg Reaver
Sigil Blessing
Ridge Rannet
Steelclad Serpent
Excommunicate
Outrider of Jhess
Obelisk of Naya
Windwright Mage
--> Jund Panorama

Bone Splinters
Jungle Weaver
Thorn-Thrash Viashino
Etherium Sculptor
Resounding Scream
--> Naya Panorama
Cancel

Once again this pick gives me 3 red sources with just 1 mountain in the deck and ensures i get to play the ajani and is a reasonable pick over the other 2 potions of bone splinters and jungle weaver anyway

Pack 1 pick 5:
Excommunicate
Banewasp Affliction
Cathartic Adept
Lightning Talons
Angelsong
Undead Leotau
--> Bant Panorama
Scavenger Drake
Demon's Herald
Swerve
Forest

Ive been passing some good black but nothing to juice, but this bant panorama helps ensure i can play my bant charm, whihc as red it being cut quite heavily this way and black prob will be pack 2, is a commidty i need to value highly.

Call to Heel
Cloudheath Drake
Glaze Fiend
Esper Panorama
Obelisk of Naya

You should have picked the wall, it is sooo good. First off it blocks EVERYTHING and second off, if your opponent can't find an answer quick, the life gain gets out of control. Puls it is worth like 4 tix I believe.

wow

just wow

you opened 3 insane rares. no idea why you wouldnt take the wall. Its worth 4 tix and insane in limited...its a complete and utter bomb. You gain like 5 life a turn and can block anything up to 5 power every turn. Thats ten extra damage a turn your opponent has to deal to win.

I want to say I agree that it was a very very clear mispick not taking the wall. A lot of wins in limited are a matter of just barely getting 20 damage in (usually when your opp curves very well and gets 2 drop, 3 drop, 4 drop, removal or whatever (most removal can't get the wall)), and so life gain can be surprisingly good.

All looked pretty straightforward, I think the only mispicks were:

Bant Charm Over Nacatl: Already having Ajani I would just stay straight Naya and make sure you have no problems w/ your mana (this pick becomes even more prevalent since you picked up sarkhan and ceredon).

Steward over Topan: You have a couple of high casting cards but topan is rediculously good.

Other than that the wall... but i think thats already been discussed

Bant charm over nactal is no mispick is the better card and setting yourself into naya just cause you opened an ajani is not how to draft this set. Much better to end up in the right shards and splash whatevers to good not to play. Setting yourself into a shard to early because of a card is probably the most common mistake people make drafting this set.

Also topan is a better card but its not that good in my deck, the steward was far more suited, its not just a case of taking the best card.

Setting yourself into naya is NEVER bad considering it is by far the most deepest shard for SOA (prolly second deepest in conflux w/ esper first).

As well, you have 6 spells that are 5cc or more (3 of which are cyclers) along with having a sunseed nurturer and obelisk so taking the more powerful topan over yet another mana fixer is better.

Setting yourself into a shard because of one pick is alway bad, no matter what shard it is.

I need 2 drops, look how few 2 drops I have check my creature count its something like 14 if I rember correctly and 6 of them are 5cc or more . I want early creatures to gum up the board so i can get more from my pws I have a lot of high end creatures and very little exalted topan is not suited to this deck. Making a 3rd turn pw which i did wins games, as does going 2 drop 3 drop either of my pw, I already had enough 3 drop spells.

some picks I disagree completely with, some picks I think are questionable but passable:

mispicks:
p1p2
bant is by far the weakest shard in this format, you've first picked an ajani which is a great first pick, and in naya. by taking this card, you've all but guarenteed 3 colours and a splash, which is perfectly doable, but makes ajani much weaker (planeswalkers are much better at solidifying a tempo advantage than swinging around one, because someone ahead can just take them out in 1-2 swings). bant charm is a marginally better card probably (although even that is disputable). you should def. be flexible here and take the nacatl.

p1p3
sigil blessing is a very powerful card in aggro naya, one of the best decks in the format. I understand why you take panorama here, but it's the mindset and logic which I don't like, you seem to be keen to avoid drafting naya at all costs, in spite of the cards being there and available (you don't even consider blessing from this pack, instead considering scavenger drake, a FIFTH colour card)

p3p1
I would honestly consider wall over banefire as the second best card in the set after martial coup. it's an out and out bomb, worth a single card splash in all but THE MOST aggressive decks. the fact you have two walkers, few removal spells and minimal defence vs fliers just compounds the unjustifiability of this pick.

questionable/interesting picks
p2p6
I agree with your logic here, what are you tapping with topan ascetic to pump it? jungle weaver? :S

p2p7
questionable pick imho, it doesn't do a lot in your deck (you want to curve and ramp out aggressively with the cards you have so far). gift is card advantage and allows you to solidify your plan b if you don't draw either walker.

p2p10
I wouldn't criticise you for picking sunseed nurturer here

p2p11
dregscape zombie which you won't play, or yoked plowbeast which you might?

p3p5
right pick, but wow it's late :S

p3p8
again, I know I keep saying it, but wandering goblins is a card you should really play with once or twice, especially in a deck with a good late game such as yours

in sum, I think you made 3 picks that were indefensible, and felt you should have had at least 2 more wandering goblins in your draft.

I really like all the charms I hardly ever pass them, I accept the wall I did not know. But i stand by taking the charm over nactal, I do have a natural aversion to naya its a results thing. Just cause I opened an ajani does not mean naya's open so i still take the best card if i think its signifcantly stronger.

Ps i did play wandering goblin in one deck and i liked it, just not sure if i want multiples.

I don't dispute that logic at all, however it's not as if this pick is between say bant charm and a midrange green pick such as mosstodon, it's between a 3 colour card, and one of the top 5 commons for the archtype in which your first card pushes you.

nacatl has got a lot stronger in the 3rd pack with all the basic land fixing ensuring you will have RGW on turn 3 and the abundence of 2/2s in the format, and the exchanging of a pack of 3 toughness hating removal for 2 toughness hating removal just makes this card, I see where you are going with your logic, but again, it's not like you took a bull ceradon first pick, ajani is really at its best in a focussed fast aggro deck, and it's merely very good in a slower multi colour concoction
