I was going to put up my AAC Draft, but after drafting 4 bombs(archangel, vein drinker, sigil and megaloth) playing 5 color green basically. And my opponent played 3x pro green 2/2.

So anyways. I dont draft Tenth that much, so my pick orders might be wrong. You should also know that i rare draft ALOT, (if its at least 2 tix i most likely take it)

This draft had 4 people above 1800 (myself, novasandler, aziridine and another) I faced both of those two during the draft too, go me! I lost the final to nova(who had a 1900 rating when beating me) in three close games. The games he won were because he was able to draw his sea monsters and bounced my blockers alot Sad.

I lost the list, but i played 1 swamp, 3 islands (i wanted to reliably cast persuasion ) 1 plains, caves, coast and forests. I didnt play the mystic or cancel.

Round 1:

Rating 1550ish:

He has a Black red deck with alot of zombies and lord of the undead. He made a few mistakes that let me get ahead enough to win the game. Game 1 was his if he just chump blocked, but he didnt and i had might of oaks + hurricane for 4 to steal the game. Game 2 he started out real fast. The board stalled with me at 2, but i finally draw something to handle his snapping drake, and am able to attack with my bearas a few turns for the final points, playing around the lightning elemental i had already seen.

Round 2:

Rating 1850ish.

These games were that hard really. Game 1 he got stuck on 2 colors in his 3 color deck. And game two my deck overpowered him. He played out a few fliers, they all got hurricaned, and my bears beat in for the win.

Round 3

Rating 1900.

I knew id have to face nova eventually. He always seems to lag a ton, so playing him is not fun sometimes cause it takes awhile.

He was playing Blue red..probally the best two color combination in XXX, so i knew his deck was probally good.

Game 1 i had 3 bears by turn 4. I had the removal to back them up and was able to win with might of oaks on a bear.

Game 2 I had a pretty weak draw, and his deck showed a completely different side this game with 2 aggressive drops early (he had been only played card draw, counters and higher casting costs dudes game 1 (lowest cost was hill giant). Im not able to draw any removal or spiders, or hurricane so im not able to handle the fliers.

Game 3 he started off with bloodrock cyclops then juggernaut then icy. I was able to ramp into turn 4 craw wurm, which he unsummoned. He then played aven fisher and looter. I was able to play my avatar of might for GG, play some more dudes. This is the turn he draws icy, tapping down my 8/8 and forcing me to chump. I then play out my craw wurm, with the mana to still terror his sea monster that he plays that turn. Wurm blocks the 3/3 and take the jugg putting me at 9. I beat down with my team, bringing him to 10. I have terror and flash spider left in hand, with a hurricane. So if i can get him to swing in with team, play the spider(get him to tap it with icy, because he would still have lethal..)and then terror his dude. But he has removal soul for spider. And after terroring his dude, im at 3. He has the incinerate to finish me off. If he hadnt had the incin at least i couldve forced a fourth game with a draw, but he drew it that turn (at least im sure he did, considering he wouldve used it with my wurm had blocked the cyclops, or even the turn before to clear out my chump blocker that wouldve gave him the win.

I just wish i had seen the icy before game 3, then i couldve at least brought in a mountain and smash Sad.

Im not going to claim to be a great or even good drafter anymore (once, maybe) but it seems to me like you made a few misdrafts.


Cancel is a really cut-able card. its almost always your 23rd card, so why take it first? the pack is bad, so go with something that isnt color intensive like cancel. It doesn't really matter what. Hell, raredraft that spot. If i took a color intensive card, it'd be the fear guy. You always play terrors if you get them, so why not have a smidge of other black stuff in case you open a bomb black rare? Just my opinion.

Persuasion made you look good pack 2, though.

I might have gone with unsummon. Leave you open to see all the green then you CLEARLY go U/G in the future (obviously you didnt know what was being passed YET, but kavu climber and giant spider together would have let me know green isnt being taken to my immediate right)

Pick 4, Now you know nobody is green. Time to take/hate it out. whichever you think is better. id go with the rare.

wayfinder/strider was a big debate back in the day of XXX 2 years ago. I usually took strider because i tend to go 2 colors exclusively in XXX. Plus people are more likely to splash or play green with a fixer, so you are cutting it out more for pack 2.

id then get elves.


This would all have been in hindsight seeing your picks, but first pick I have to not take cancel.

Uhh...cancel is quite good. I dont know why everyone hates it so much, but its pretty good. Games tend to be pretty close, and the counter is clutch for stopping big creatures and bombs. I also really hate black in XXX.

I think terror is also a signal that black is open pick 4. Its by far and away the best common in the set. There isnt anything thats close. a 7/7 trampler(when i play it) is meh when im passing terrors. But it did let me know that green was gonna flow, so i started taking green. Id much rather have terror then molimo.

I agree that bears > elves. But that wouldve been my 4th 2 drop creature. And going Elves -> wayfinder is good.

There wasnt alot in the packs for my deck when i did rare draft..

But your logic is pretty much flawed. Even on starcitygames they post draftcaps where people rare draft, not to much of the extent that i do, but unlike the pros i have a much more limited bankroll. So any boost i can get to my collection is going to be taken. My deck still turned out fine, and it shows a basic concept and my draft style for XXX draft. And since MTGO is having Nix Tix XXX this week, i thought i would post it for the more inexperienced drafters to learn how to do it better. As well as getting the opinions of the experts on my picks.

Terror is better than almost anything, but I meant if you had switched picks to how I would have done things, I'd have passed terror to let them go black, so i can have full reign over Green, and possibly blue.

Elves are way better than bears when you have blue fliers to ramp into imo. You didn't really, but just how I see it.

Nix tix is right now, or upcoming? I kind of want to do a draft =(

you say 4 2drops as if it's a bad thing. you have terrors x2 and giant growth. this is a tempo deck that wants pressure on the board always- albeit in the form of the less-than-terrifying grizzly bear.

Might of Oaks is certainly not a bomb and sift is almost assuredly better at that pick.

Might of Oaks is close to a bomb yes, most certainly WAY better than sift. But yes, as others have pointed out, Time Stop is far too good to take Gravedigger over.

Alright, ill have to try out time stop next time.

Nah, im not part of the old clan trotsky. Ive just faced nova in infinite 8-4s over the years.

Yeah, they are doing nix tix for XXX on mtgo this week. It rotates every week tho, so take the chance to play while you can. Be weary tho, alot of sharks are playing it (myself included).

I wanted the ramp elves would give, even tho i didnt have fliers (i didnt take any because of hurricane..)I also had a craw wurm i wanted to play sooner then turn 6.

Might of Oaks is most definatly a bomb. 7d to the face is good. It won me 2 games during this draft.

Ill post another draft later when i actually get the chance to draft.
