The plan was to go open source with the next version of apprentice, wich has been in development for a few years already. As it was a one man project, it doesnot go too fast (I think I played the first really playable version something like 2 year ago) and it looks like shroomie got tired of the lack of growth in the program and decided there are other ways of getting things done when it comes to programming.
It looks like even that is not a really interesting option for shroomie.

| I'm looking through the program, and it still seems to be peer-peer. Given that its open source now, what is to stop people from developing cheats if it ever caught on? |

the project never finished and the creator gave up. So technically no one plays it. |

strangely enough shroomie left a message on the salvation boards with only a link to the scourgeforce site, and saying it is fair game for anyone to finish it.

There are ways of having open source card games. Basically, playerA encrypts each card then shuffles the deck, then playerB encrypts each card then shuffles the deck again. That way, neither player knows which cards are where in the deck and to see unencrypted version of a card, both players need to be involved in the decryption.
There are other things that can be done as well that I won't go into now. |

For a fully-working, playable, multi-platform, peer-to-peer, open-source Apprentice-like program, see Scroll Rack. http://scrollrack.sourceforge.net/.
It uses an encryption scheme called Mental Poker. Here's the wikipedia page on it:

For the truly curious or insane: Here's a link to notes from a college lecture trying to explain the math behind Mental Poker. If you can understand this, I'm impressed.

| Yeah, I can explain that. Its Apprentice 2.0 open-sourced. Grab an old copy of Delphi 7 and finish it up. I haven't played magic cards (online or in real life in a few years). |
