thorn of amethyst and sunburst

I have thorn of amethyst in play. My opp casts engineered explosives, tapping an island to pay for thorn cost. My opp wants to activate the explosive and have it kill all 0cc stuff, but I told him the explosive came into play with 1 counter for sunburst since U was used to pay for its cost. Opp disagreed, and of course "Player Lost" soon followed. Just checking tho...I'm right about this, right?

Yep.

502.37b Sunburst applies only as the spell is resolving and only if one or more colored mana was paid for its costs. Mana paid for additional or alternative costs applies.
