Been giving this deck some testing, mainly against W/Goyf and MUC/Pickles, and it seems to be holding up. But there's always room for suggestions/improvement, SO...
"Hellfire Club"
Creatures:
4x Jaya Ballard, Task Mage
4x Simian Spirit Guide
4x Phyrexian Totem
3x Tombstalker
3x Nihilith
Spells:
4x Damnation
4x Smallpox
4x Fiery Temper
3x Sulfurous Blast
3x Tendrils of Corruption
Land:
8x Swamp
8x Mountain
4x Graven Cairns
2x Dakmor Salvage
2x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
SB:
4x Extirpate
4x Strangling Soot
4x Hammerheim Deadeye
3x Akroma, Angel of Fury
Deck Theory:
Creatures: Jaya is more or less the centerpiece to this deck, between torching creatures, the opponent, and hating blue like there's no tomorrow. I'm running the Spirit Guides for the mana boost to speed things up since the biggest drawback to this deck is the mana curve. Totems also help with mana, and lay down a beating after clearing the road. Tombstalker and Nihilith are shoe-ins as solid, efficient beaters with built-in ways to work around their mana costs, both running extremely well with the deck design.
Spells: Damnation and Sulfurous Blast keep things under wraps as reset buttons, with Blast adding in some minor burn as well. Smallpox=card advantage, especially in junction with Nihilith/Tombstalker. Fiery Temper is burn, be it against creatures or the opponent, and Tendrils supplies even MORE creature kill with the added bonus of lifegain.
Lands: Swamps and Mountains tend to fit well with the black/red color scheme. Islands/Forests/Plains just didn't seem to be giving me that edge for some reason . Graven Cairns also seems to support black/red well enough more or less as a dual land. Urborg powers Tendrils, plain enough, and Salvage is usually the choice land to toss to Smallpox, and can be dredged to set up delving for Tombstalker.
SB: Extirpate to chop out key ingredients of disruption the opponent might have in store, Strangling Soot>Smallpox against weenie decks, Akroma vs Blue, and Hammerheim Deadeye vs anything nasty that flies (Threshold Mystic Enforcer, opposing Tombstalker for examples).
So, feel free to offer up any comments or suggestions you might have. I look forward to giving this deck some more testing and tweaking as might be required. |
