Hey what's up everyone. I would like to tell a story. I'm 28 from Nebraska, I started playing magic around Revised, so long time. 91-92 ? I had quite a collection from every set and never really knew how to build a good deck. My friends and I would usually play multiplayer with really huge decks that contained the best cards we owned from our collection, made for fun friday or saturday nights.
We never even knew the meaning of combo or tournament decks, we were from a small town and the closest place that even sold cards and held tournaments was 120 miles away in lincoln, and no you couldn't buy them off the internet because the internet wasn't even around then. Usually we would all go in on 1 booster box
and split the packs up among us.
It was so fun back then killing your friends with firebreathing ornithopters or a 40 point fireball or meteor shower, not from mana acceleration just because we had that many lands out in play. You never dared to play armageddon that late in the game for fear of serious revenge later in the night when you were asleep, although it was always cool to cast sharrazad multiple times in a game.
So after highschool we all go off our own ways in college - and we eventually end up back home for a couple years afterwards. During this time I happen to pick up my first issue of scrye and that's when I first learn to really start building good quality decks. My friends couldn't believe i was winning 1 on 1 with 60 card decks,
I think the first one was a mono blue control deck with forbids, capsize, etc. close to the one jon finkel played but was missing quicksands, medallions, and a few others. then megrim decks, and then I went back a little bit after I saw the video of the us national tournament with mike long playing prosperous bloom.
I thought that was the coolest deck I had ever seen played, and had to build it although I was missing some of the cards urza saga had just came out and I though yawmoth's will fit the bill perfectly and it did do it's job. Though it was awesome to cast that big of a drain life just by discarding. Friends hated it but I loved it. entered some tournaments never won but it was fun to do.
Couple of years later we all sort of move apart again and I'm really left with no one to play with. I was sort of going through a hard time in my life and needed money, so I decided to sell my entire collection.
Now I've known about this site for awhile, I'm seldom on and don't play very much. I think the last set I seriously played was masques. while I had cards from revised on up. my collecting really took off from tempest - urza's destiny. some after and up to masques. I'm starting to learn the new formats and enjoy playing on appr and mws.
And while im starting to enjoy it again, and I've been thinking about collecting again just for the sake of collecting It saddens me to know of all the great cards I had and let go and I can't bring myself to start collecting the new cards when I had so many great older cards. they were a piece of my past that I shared with my friends and enjoyed playing greatly. I had regrets doing it when I got the money for them, but I needed it at the time.
But trust me when I tell you this. No matter what never sell your cards, I don't care what you need the money for it's not worth giving up a part of your past that you enjoyed doing so much with your friends. even if you don't play anymore, it's more of a comforting thought to know thay you still have them, than if you pawned them off. |

| Nicely written. I am in this same boat, having just started again around 5th Dawn. Casual used to be the way to go for me, but this damn magic-league has turned me into a cut-throat. Strange thing about this article is this: a. I am currently selling the rest of my physical cards on ebay b. I was tonight going to write a thread about "prosperbloom" the deck you mentioned.. I wanted to know if it is still viable. Sometimes though, husker, when you are in my shoes, and you have mouths other than your own to feed, those magic cards aren't very filling for a 3 year olds belly... Though I do agree, that you should hang onto some of them, just to have a casual gaming night with your friends. |

Good Luck with that article about prosbloom still being a viable deck, because it's not. I know I've tried many times to bring this deck back and it just doesn't work. I'm not the best deck builder and I'm not familliar with some of the sets post masques but with vampy restricted and banned in 1.5 it's not very viable. |
