A lot of it has to do with shipping overseas and the insane cost of going through tightened security at custom checks and over-priced fuel costs of the shipping companies.
See, the thing is, when they do their accounting, I'm pretty sure they count Modo and the real deal separately. They might even be considered two separate businesses. I really don't know for sure, but considering how most businesses are run, an educated guess would say so. So, if they're not making a high enough profit selling real cards, instead of just compensating for it by shifting profits from their modo account into their cardboard account, they have to readjust how they do business on that side. In this case, they have to raise prices.
Shifting profits from modo to cardboard would be against the law and could lead to serious long-term problems with the IRS. I suppose they coud merge the two businesses, but that could possibly be more costly than keeping them separate, which would drive the prices up anyways.
Now you can argue that Hasbro makes enough money as it is as a multi-million dollar corporation, so there's no reason to raise prices and they're only trying to make more money (and you might be right) but multi-million dollar corporations aren't there to give money away. They're there to make money. If one department isn't making money, they're going to re-evaluate it. If the product sells but the overhead is too high, raise prices. If the product dosn't sell, they either increase advertising and/or find creative ways to sell it or improve the product, or they shut it down. Simple. They're not going to sit there and lose money.

So, in conclusion, you can't blame them. You have to blame Bush.

Well of course lol. I'm just saying that I don't have that big of a budget and am already having trouble with current prices. If prices get too high, I'll have to stop playing, and noone wants to quit this fun game. =/
